Described as the greatest knight, William has so far served three kings (Henry the Young King, Henry II and Richard) but will go on to serve two more (John and Henry III). Risen from obscurity from being a penniless young knight to one of the most powerful men in Europe. Given the title of the Marshal to take care of the household and the security of the King of England. His loyalty remains firm to his feudal lord. Began life as a knight-errant because he had no lands of his own; took part in tourneys and set off with his uncle, Patrick of Salisbury, on an escort for Eleanor of Aquitaine. Patrick was killed in an ambush by the Lusignan brothers, whilst William was captured; however, he saved the life of Eleanor, who repaid him by paying his ransom and setting him free. Then he was appointed tutor of Henry the Young King, whilst taking him to the tourney circuits and building a legendary reputation. Was exiled from court because of rumours spread by envious noblemen and crusaded to the holy lands. After rejoining the court of Henry II, he remained loyal whilst his sons Geoffrey, Richard and John rebelled; unhorsed Richard in a skirmish but was welcomed into Richard's court after Henry's death. Married a rich heiress Isabelle de Clare, and titles went to William's name. Included in the council of regency after Richard's departure to the holy land, helped in the exclusion of William Longchamp and is currently awaiting news of Richard's welfare.
