Niwa's Recent News
  • 19 April 2015 -- Niwa is under new management!

Niwa is now under new management as we strive to stand up the the standards of fun and entertaining roleplaying we have so far provided here at Niwa. Today makes the start of a campaign to bring in new members as Head Admin Akaiken and Support Admin Sparky work together to improve and uphold the current face of Niwa and keep us all moving forward!

They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home.

Can you survive it?

Police Precinct, Special Victims Unit

Lieutenant Solaries stood hunched over his desk with both palms pressed against the surface supporting his weight. A few strands of his too long hair had fallen down in front of his face shielding most of his features. There were two stacks of paper before him. The first was his transfer confirmation from the Special Victims Unit to Robbery and Homicide. No one wanted to be scraping up the pieces of someone else’s life forever. Angaelus was no exception. He had joined SVU because he had lost someone, but the tenth anniversary was only a few days away and he had not found a trace. It was the one unsolved case he could not live with and the recommendation from his last psychological evaluation had been for him to transfer. It felt as though he had failed, and worse, that now he was giving up. But the Captain had made it an order. Six months in another division and if he was determined, he could request a transfer back at the end of it.

Very few departments even had Lieutenants. They were the perfect balance between management and field work. Understandably, it did not matter how many detectives upper management threw at the Homicide Department, there was still more work to be done. One of Niwa’s many charms. It was the second stack of papers on the table Angaelus was trying to focus on, the report from Detective Oshiro had everything he needed and more to mobilise a Task Force. The Shipping vessel was due to hit the harbour that night.

There were some details in Hiroshi’s report that as his Lieutenant, Angaelus simply did not want to know how he had come by it. But if he was right, there was going to be a shipping container filled with victims of a small Triad Human Trafficking operation. Worst of all, and the highlight of Hiroshi’s investigation, was that they were children. They could have seized the vessel off shore, but that was not going to shut the trafficking operation down. At best it would set them back a couple months, at worst, it was going to endanger more lives.

1800 hours.

They had a little over four hours before the ship came in. It was enough time to get permission from upper management, brief everyone and get to the Lower East Side. They were going to need some muscle and he had a couple favours he could call in with one or two members of S.W.A.T. but ultimately, he wanted to keep the operation in house. It is what his department was trained to do. Lifting the phone from the cradle, he started making calls. He was light on the details, but the briefing was set in an hour.

Lydia nodded, as soon as they would leave the briefing she would prepare to wear more protective armor. A simple rookie mistake that could cost her her life if she wasn't careful enough, thankfully she is surrounded by these experienced officers that could help her out in situations such as these ones. She would make sure not to take any unnecessary risks if she could help it. She was going to be making sure that those children would be freed and get them to the proper care that they'd need. With any luck she wouldn't even need to fire her gun. Not that she wouldn't be useful in a firefight, she was often told at the academy that she was quite the crack shot, hitting targets that were at the limits of a guns range with deadly precision. But there was quite the difference between firing in a range against targets and firing against live opponents in a life or death situation. However she would be ready indeed.

The rookie responded to Officer Cunningham's orders. "Yes sir! I'll meet you at your vehicle as soon as I gather my equipment." Lydia Hattori gathered her bulkier but more protective armor and her Glock 9mm handgun. The armor might be less flexible and slow her down slightly but even still she was very very fast. That Speed of hers just might be necessary in helping get those children free from these dangerous people.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Magen was already as prepared as she could possibly be, wearing her armor and carrying her .357 Magnum handgun. For most people the kickback would be more difficult to compensate for in comparison to most handguns but since she has enhanced strength due to her robotic frame it made more sense to carry around a more powerful gun with stopping power. The only thing that she would need to pick up on her way out of the building would be her Riot Shield that she'd carry on her back. It never hurt to carry that when going into a combat situation, it was always helpful even when it made it so she was able to protect a teammate.

"Lieutenant I am at your command. As soon as I gather my Shield I will rendezvous at your vehicle." This is what she was here for, to be the muscle for the operation. She would be ready to accompany the good lieutenant as a part of this mission. If anything went wrong, well she understood what "on standby" meant. Bureaucracy brought things like this to a grinding halt ion some cases. Magen would make sure that if things went south that she would give cover to help the team retreat. She was truly the only backup that this team of SVU members would be receiving.

‘Aye aye Captain...’ Supposedly there was nothing wrong with a little extra padding, but who was he to argue if the people around him were gunned down in a fire fight. Hiroshi wasted no time in slipping on the police issue Kevlar vest that had been left at his workspace, if you would call sticking thumb tacks into a picture on his wall ‘work’. The holstered Glock had not been fired since he obtained it from the original recipe Hiroshi Oshiro six months ago, not that he did not know how to use one... but it felt so, impersonal to simply ‘point and shoot’ at the people that pissed him off.

Moments later Detective Oshiro had made his way to the carpool, and found the assumed ride for the evening. If no one else was there he would have leaned against the vehicle before drumming his fingers against the duco, not that he was impatient, or even that he was excited... It had taken months to let someone else hold his life in their hand, even to this day there had only been one NCPD Officer that he would have given his life for.

(Thank you Cent <3 I know you are fried from work.)
Everything Angaelus could put his hands on was standard issue. From his sidearm to his vest. The one area everything started to get a little grey was his choice in vehicles. He insisted on using his own vehicle which had been outfitted with all the police trimmings. The gunmetal coloured jeep had the convertible hard top firmly fixed in place until the weather warmed. Even then, the Lieutenant was not one to really let his hair down. Arguable, the vehicle was excessive, and not exactly suited to police work. But he was not speeding after criminals or booking people. Magen was the first person to sit across from him in the sports edition since he had bought it.

Sending Hiroshi with Jacob and Lydia had been deliberate to allow them the travel time to ask any other questions. More than that, he trusted the two detectives to keep Lydia out of trouble in the field. Though if her academy scores were any indication, she could probably teach the old dogs a trick or two. None of that mattered though, all the tactical simulations in the world did not make up for the real thing.

Pulling out of the precinct carpark and into the flow of traffic, Angaelus finally looked across to Magen. He knew what every member of the SVU was capable of, or at least suspected how they would handle themselves. The android was the only unknown quantity. He had questions, starting with the complete lack of any additional protective gear around her frame. “What are your combat capabilities, Magen?” Offensive, defensive, it was an open ended question.

It was roughly 50kilometres from the Precinct to the Shipping Yard on the Lower East Side. Even taking the highways and bypasses, it would take them the better part of an hour to get all the way across the City. There was plenty of time for Angaelus to get acquainted with her.

Magen accompanied the Lieutenant to his vehicle, a jeep converted to Police specifications at least in so far as it has all the right trimmings. In a prolonged firefight or chase it would be useless but aesthetically was nice. She could still appreciate the finer things in life, just because she was an android physically did not mean that was shew as dead inside. She took a seat and debated how to answer Angaelus's question. "Well sir my combat capabilities are quite straight forward. I have incredible strength gifted me by my Android body which would be considered to be that of five times that of a man at peak physical strength. Obviously useful for breaking through locked doors or apprehending suspects of unusually high strength. My base which is underneath this armor that I am wearing is made up of various soft metals and plastics simulating that of skin and muscles over a mettalic frame. That gives me the base endurance of three times that of a man at his peak. Allowing me to take bullets so others don't have to. I wear around me, full body armor that is consistent with that of Type III armor capable of resisting up to armor piercing rounds. When out in the field I will usually wield my Riot shield to increase that defense exponentially to help protect my teammates. The visor on my armor is currently equipped with night vision allowing me to work well in the dark and I am a very good shot with my magnum. I am uploaded with the latest combat programs from the Israeli Military.

She turned to face her commanding officer as he as driving the car. Her eyes were beneath the red visor but she was looking at him to gauge his reaction to what she was capable of. "Is there anything else that you would like to know?"

Unfortunately for the two under his command, if it could even be called that, Jacob had taken a little longer than the two of them to get suited up and ready. Part way through retrieving a Kevlar vest, Jacob glanced down at the vest he was already wearing: a very nice crimson number he was particularly fond of. His mind remembered the last time he was in a shoot out. Not wanting to possibly soil the very nice garment, he had stripped it off and folded it back in his office before donning the protective vest. A gun, holster, and spare rounds were obtained shortly thereafter.

"Sorry. Sorry for the wait."

He arrived to the sight of Lydia all rarin' to go and Hiroshi impatiently tapping his fingers on the hood of his car. Living in an apartment and not having a family meant less stress on the wallet so Jacob's car was a nice higher-end model, but nothing that screamed "super rich".

They were off in a matter of moments after they got in, with 1980's rock playing softly on the radio.

"So before we get to the scene, what experience do you two have out in the field?"

Catching Jacob from the distance caused a smile from Hiroshi before turning to his partner. “Lydia... you can ride shotgun.” The suggestion was made with a slight nod, any chance she had at stepping up would give her the experience she needed. ‘After all, I need to clock a few more hours in the back of a police car.’

“No worries at all Jacob.” Hiroshi mused before finally opening the door, the interior seats were something he could lounge in for hours on end but the question given needed to be answered. Even if the information Hiroshi had to give was part truths and complete lies. “In the field?” The question came at a bit of a surprise before recalling Hiroshi Oshiro’s NCPD history, it was so much easier now that he had police reports and documents to read... to be honest he mainly looked at the pictures.

“I worked in Homicide for years, I preferred being out in the field, some where I could make a difference you know?.. After the accident I cycled myself into the S.V.U. Call it a higher calling if you will, but it felt like something I had to do.” There were levels of concern mixed with the hesitance of speaking about the car crash that should have killed him. But in his own mind a higher calling was whatever Mei Tsang deemed appropriate. Looking to the seat in front of him he knew Lydia was fresh out of the academy, her list of ‘on the job’ experience may have differed from his own but her experience was unique to her.

Lydia looked at her partner with glee as he said that she could ride shotgun. This was wonderful, she was expecting to have to sit in the back and would not of made a fuss at all about it. But this was so much better. She listened to her partner talk about his own experience in the field, he generally didn't like to talk about that kind of stuff so she gobbled up what little information he was willing to dish out. It wasn't that she was a needless gossip or anything, she just liked to learn a little bit about her partner is all. Not that there was much there that she did not already know, ah well.

"Well I don't have any real on the job experience out in the field yet. I'm still just pretty much fresh out from the academy and this is my first actual case." The young officer had a determined look on her face. "I put in lots of hours at the shooting range and am a very good shot but this will be my first time getting into live combat against actual criminals. I can assure you though that I am ready and I won't let either of you down."

Lydia placed her hands in her lap as she awaited Jacob's response. She was honest with her answer but for all she knew he might not appreciate being paired up with someone who has had no real field experience. Not that that would stop her from doing her job however, she just optimistically hoped that he would be open minded to her inexperience.

Once on the highway, Jacob picked up the speed. He was by no means going all Fast and Furious all over the asphalt, but he was in a hurry and he had no intention of getting to the scene too late to do anything. It was the same mindset he had whenever he had to make a flight or get to a meeting. Getting there way too early was better than getting there even a little bit late, and in this case there really were lives hanging in the balance so he had a better excuse.

Otherwise, Jacob was nodding along with Hiroshi's and Lydia's respective answers.

"Well then, Hiroshi, I'd say you have more experience in this situation than I do. Homicide tends to get out there with guns more often. Usually I'm just visiting houses for interviews."

It was only a very occasional time when Jacob had to even bring along his side arm. It was an even rarer occasion where he had to draw it, or even fire it. He hoped Hiroshi did not take any offense to being "under the command" of a less field-experienced detective. At least Lydia had less experience than him, though she made up for with more range time.

"Lydia, I don't want you goin' in thinking that we're heading into combat. It'll probably turn into that, but I personally don't want to see you getting trigger happy. We're here to save lives and that includes the lives of the criminals."

That was a belief Jacob always kept in mind that many people, officers and civilians alike, often forgot about.

"Ideally, we don't fire a single shot. Ideally."

Angaelus patiently waited for Magen to finish her specifications analysis. In a way it was exactly what he was hoping for, in another, it illustrated just how different she was from everyone else on the team. Jacob was completely human, not that it was any kind of negative, it simply meant he was not going to be able to take bullets. Hiroshi’s file listed him as human, but there was something else in there that the Lieutenant had picked up on the moment he had shaken the man’s hand for the first time. He did not get the sense that the detective was any more capable of catching bullets than Jacob was, but there was more there and he had experience behind him. Lydia on the other hand was a fresh out of the academy rookie. But everyone started somewhere. There was no time like the present to figure out if she had what it took to be in the SVU. It was one of the hardest departments to work, and not because of the bad guys who shot back. There was a human cost that was only registered in staff retention rates and psychological reports.

“I will need you on point for this operation.” There were no two ways about it. He did not need to go into details about what the others were. Human until proven otherwise, right? “If you give a tactical order, I’ll make sure the others follow it.” That was the point of having a member of SWAT with them after all, tactical appraisal of the situation. “If you have any questions about the team or the operation, now would be the time.”

Dock 24, Lower East Side
Catwalk on the roof of the closest warehouse

“It is freezing out here.” Officer Aoi Maki rubbed his gloved hands together as though it was going to bring any life back into his fingers. The NCPD seriously needed to rethink their ‘approved’ winter uniform.

“Why don’t you head back to the patrol car and put the heater on.” Toshio Saito had been listening to his partner complain about cold for the last hour. There was a monotone quality to his voice as he continued to watch over the dock for signs of the ship or the human smugglers.

Aoi stopped rubbing his hands together and stared at the back of his partner’s head. “Really?” There was genuine hope in the man’s voice.

Toshio wanted to bury his face in his hands, instead he just closed his eyes and exhaled with exasperation. “No. I was being sarcastic.” The response was brutal. “Would it kill you to stop complaining and keep an eye out?” That was all the attention he was going to give the other man. He was cold too, but that was not going to stop him from doing his job.

Aoi screwed his face up and started posturing slightly as he mimed out his partner’s words with a lot more attitude. At least it was helping him keep warm. “Shouldn’t the SVU be here by now?” If he couldn’t complain about the cold, he was going to complain about the reason he was stuck out there in the first place. The greatest crime associated with trafficking children was clearly the inconvenience it was having on Officer Maki’s life.

Rather than dignifying that question with an answer, Toshio turned his attention to a truck pulling up near the dock with a fresh fish logo printed on the side. It was the only movement at all besides the occasional dock worker finishing up his rounds. “Call it in.”

“Really?” Aoi looked to the small truck and back to his partner. “It is a fish monger... on a dock...”

So help him, Toshio was about to shoot his partner himself. “Yes, it is. Which would make perfect sense and be the perfect cover, except this is a commercial dock. Fish don’t get delivered here.” One of the dock workers seemed to be aware of the same detail and he stopped what he was doing to stare at the truck. Whatever he had seen was all the inspiration the dock worker needed to make himself scarce. Within a minute the whole dock had been emptied of anything which resembled witnesses.

Aoi reached for the radio mounted on his shoulder suddenly wishing he was still feeling cold. “Come in dispatch...”

“Well, maybe we can make a few house calls on the way back if that makes you feel better.” The shift of humour highlighted Hiroshi’s tone as he accepted Officer Cunningham’s response. The slight pause was given moments after. ‘Really? You want to joke around with these people?’ Glancing across to his partner there was a level of uncertainty of how she would take the slave trade. “Ideally, these kids will be happy and healthy by the same time tomorrow night.” Finding something to focus on had always been the hard part, but tonight it was the children... Mei would have understood.

“Come in Detective Oshiro...” The sound had been enough to break his concentration and mental berating as he leant in between the two front seats to press the talk button for the radio. “This is Detective Oshiro, what is the situation? Over.” It came out so natural, to the point it scared himself as he glanced across to Officer Cunningham, the slight apologetic look was given before his hand lifted off the Radio. ‘No fast movements, they can smell fear.’

Slowly he returned back against the seat. ‘Just keep it together for a few hours...’

“Just a situation update, a suspicious truck has arrived at the location.” The information set Hiroshi’s jaw in place as he could feel his fingernails biting into his clenched hand. The brief thought returned to the Triad he had butchered for the information, they had been telling the truth, they were honest till the very end... There wouldn’t have been an earlier shipment, it was already a nightmare to arrange one ship, let alone two. 'Why would they be early? And more importantly ‘WHO’ tipped those bastards off!'
