| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? The streets were never safe. Mariko never forgot that - only a fool would - but she never worried too much. She felt that she was more than capable of defending herself. She knew how to put up a fight against any would-be assailant, although she mostly relied on her psychic powers. All it took was one powerful mental command; while it didn't always work due to the target's willpower warding off her influence, it typically threw them off just long enough for her to be able to get away. So as she walked the streets, she felt secure. Even while walking in the alley behind the FALLEN Night Club, taking a shortcut on her way home to the East Side Apartments. But it had been a mistake to feel so self-assured. In Niwa City, the one unspoken rule that most citizens knew was to always expect the unexpected. Always. They lurked in the shadows of the dark alley. And when Mariko was least expecting it, a group of thugs showed themselves. She was surrounded at once, with no way to escape. She had nowhere to run. "Well, well, what's a pretty little lady like you doing out here all alone?" one of the thugs sneered, stepping towards her. Mariko was about to link in and send a witty comeback into his mind, only to find that something was very, very wrong. Trying to reach into his mind was like slamming into a mental brick wall. She pulled back, her eyes widening slightly as she then tried to link into the minds of the others, seeing if it was perhaps only the one. Nothing. It was as if she had lost her psychic abilities altogether. And then it hit her. He was a meta. And his power was cancelling the powers of other metas. The realization sent a shock-wave of fear through her; just like that, she was helpless. Powerless. Weak. And here she was, surrounded by a group of thugs, many of which were wearing lecherous expressions as they looked at her. The man who had spoken to her, the leader of the group and the meta nullifying her powers, smirked as he grabbed her arm and pulled her closer. "What's the matter, babe?" he asked, raising an eyebrow while maintaining that smirk. "Cat got your tongue?" Oh, how Mariko hated that expression. She glared up at him, trying to pull away from his grasp. That made him tighten his powerful grip even further, to where Mariko let out a slight grunt of pain as his hand constricted her arm. "Mm, I love it when they play hard to get," the man murmured, wrapping his free arm around her waist and holding her to him. He moved in to forcibly steal a kiss, but Mariko had had enough. Summoning all her physical strength, she managed to shove him away, and then threw a quick jab to try and teach him a lesson. The blow connected, since it caught him off guard, and he staggered backwards as he rubbed his now-sore jaw. Then he looked at Mariko in disbelief, and she met his gaze with defiance in her silvery eyes. "You bitch!" he growled, raising his hand to backhand her as punishment. She moved quickly, ducking under his hand and throwing another punch, this time connecting with his stomach. He groaned, nearly doubling over. That was the cue for the rest of the thugs to move in on Mariko. She tried to fight them all off, but she was far outnumbered. There were too many of them, and they were all stronger than she was. This was a situation she had let herself walk into, and it wasn't one that she would be able to walk out of without help. While she no longer had a functioning tongue to form words with, her vocal chords were still intact. Her voice would be somewhat raspy after so long of a lack of use, but she prayed that it would be loud enough to be within earshot of someone nearby. She cried out, a wordless plea for help, hoping that someone would hear her. Because while she was normally loathe to admit to even herself that she needed help, there was no time for pride in a situation like this. |

Mariko briefly saw his memories, the ones that her own had caused him to recall, before he ceased all thoughts about them. She could have just as easily delved into his mind a little and brought out what he was trying not to think about - but at this moment, she really didn't care to do anything of the sort. She had just shared a few memories of her own, and the experience was unpleasant, given that the events she was recalling were immediately recent. The last thing she wanted to do was go digging around in his unpleasant memories. Taekwondo... She heard the word in his thoughts before he ever mentioned anything about it out loud. She looked at Zane, her interest piqued. So he knows Taekwondo...? Interesting, she thought to herself. Although I suppose I shouldn't be all too surprised, given how easily he was able to take down those men... Nodding once to acknowledge what he'd spoken aloud, she then told him, I'll be sure to keep that in mind. While she was considering it, whether or not she would actually decide to go to the dojo... well, that depended on the circumstances. But she had already admitted, to herself and to Zane, she needed to learn self-defense. And, taking the hint, she made a mental note to herself that she would only come on a weekend. It would simply be a matter of which weekend she found to be most convenient for her. I wouldn't call it my 'lucky night,' she thought to him after a few moments of silence between them, But, I suppose it was fortunate for me that you came along when you did. Saving me from those thugs, giving me a means to learn self-defense... She was merely stating facts, not being sentimental; although her expression was somewhat softer than before. She had to face the reality that if he hadn't come when he did, some terrible things would have happened. And if tonight never had happened to begin with, well, there would have always been the chance that she would have eventually encountered a meta similar to that thug - but stronger, more dangerous. Someone that could easily kill her. And she wouldn't have been able to defend herself in that scenario, because she was so reliant on her powers. ...Sometimes, she wondered if her thinking was a little too on the pessimistic side. But then she reminded herself that in this town, what was there to be optimistic about? |

Zane took a drag of his cigarette, and tilted his head back to blow the smoke into the air directly above him. He listened to her thoughts, and couldn't help but crack a smile. She wasn't willing to call it her lucky night, but what else could it be? If he hadn't arrived, who knows what might have happened to her, or where she might have ended up? It could have been a bad night of rape and possibly murder. It could have been a normal night, where she walked home unscathed. But it was a lucky night. Zane often walked the streets at night looking for criminals to take down, so for him it was just a normal night of just that. But knowing that he had helped at least one person made him feel great. He didn't often feel this good. He was usually angry. Angry at the gangs. Angry at all the suffering in Niwa. Angry that some people made it their mission to exploit and hurt others. But right then, in that moment, he was happy. "You know, creeps like that just have to learn that there are people out there willing to stop them. If we can make the criminals of Niwa understand that there will always be people willing to push back, eventually they will have to give up their lives of crime. Either that, or die at the hands of the righteous. I've lived in this city my whole life, and not a day goes by where I don't see an innocent person in trouble. It has to stop, and I believe that one day it will. Rest assured, the gangs won't control this city forever." A smile appeared on his face, and he took another drag of his cancer stick. Being in a good mood made Zane talkative, something he normally wasn't. He realized he might have sounded a bit overly dramatic, so he looked at Mariko apologetically. "Sorry... I didn't mean to sound so dramatic. It's just something of a passion of mine, protecting those who can't protect themselves from the gangs." |

Mariko merely shrugged in response. He was happy, she... well, she hadn't been truly happy in a long while. She simply wasn't as optimistic in her view of things. And sometimes, she herself didn't quite understand why that was. She had met others, people who had suffered in the past, and yet still managed to be happy and optimistic. Once, she heard that it was because those people didn't want others to suffer like they had. But her? She just... stopped caring. They never will learn, you know, she said, her thoughts tinted with a somber tone. There are some people that will never stop. Never. I can understand that you may want them to learn and change their ways, but the reality is they probably won't, no matter how much you want them to. A brief flashback came to her in the form of the sound of her own voice, crying and begging for the pain to end. She had wanted them to stop, so badly, but they didn't heed her pleas. Almost immediately, she shoved any further thoughts along those lines away and started reflecting more on Zane's words. I understand your passion, though. It must be a good feeling, being able to protect those that can't protect themselves. Even though she never really tried to protect anyone herself, aside from her fellow Wo Shing. Still, she imagined that it was a nice feeling indeed. |

Zane smiled and slid his hands in his pockets as he walked. He didn't really expect her to understand. Not everyone was willing to step up and push back against people who did them wrong. He understood that not everyone had the power or resources to do something to help the fight, so he didn't blame them for not trying. But he was young, healthy, powerful and rich. He could join the fight, which was why he felt like it was his duty. His parent's killer was dead, so his personal vendetta hadn't worked out, but as long as there was still a single person suffering in Niwa, the fight was far from finished. "The minute I believe that fighting isn't worth it is the minute I die. I lost two people very dear to me when I was a kid because of the gangs, and ever since I've made it my goal to do anything I can to take them down and make Niwa a better place. I don't have to succeed. All I have to do is the best I can. Then someone can take over and do the best they can, until the gangs see that no matter how many of us fall, more will rise and fight." She mentioned that protecting people must give Zane a good feeling, which was true. But that wasn't why he did it. Well, maybe it played some part in it, but even if it didn't make him feel good he'd still do it. "It's more than just protecting people. Much more. It's about showing them that they have a choice. They can feel sorry for themselves and hide away, or they can do whatever they can. I'm not saying everyone should pick up a weapon and roam the streets looking for trouble. They should leave that to people like me. But at least don't let the pain defeat you. Pain can be a source of power if you know how to tap into it. I want to show people that the past is the past, and it's up to all of us to forge a better future." |

Mariko's shoulders rose and fell slightly as she heaved a silent sigh. It was clear that she and Zane had different viewpoints. She could sense that he had suffered in the past as well, but somehow he was still different. It clicked as she listened to him speak. He had lost people dear to him; people he loved. She had lost a part of herself; something stolen from her that she could never recover. Her grudges were based on selfishness, a concern for one's self; his was for someone else, not himself. Sometimes, she hated this mind-reading thing. She understood others - and herself - far better than most others ever could. And sometimes, that wasn't a very good thing. She wondered if she would eventually drive herself mad from it all. I never said that it isn't worth it to fight. I fight when I have to. When I can. But this fight, is one that will never end. There will always be criminals, gangs out there that do what they want. And a lot of them never learn their lesson. Fighting against them, though, does save lives sometimes. So, I guess it is worth it to fight, even if you'll be fighting for a long time. People have a choice, he said. Yet, Mariko knew that not everyone had the choice to fight. She had been helpless that day when the Yakuza came for her. She didn't have the choice to fight. All she could do was plead for mercy, only for her begging to fall on deaf ears. And she knew that there were other people that had been stuck in similar situations: caught unawares, defenseless, unable to rise up and fight against the threat. Helpless to stop the crimes being committed, incapable of keeping the criminals from inflicting pain. Pain can be a source of power... Yes... Pain can be a source of power. In one day, the day I'd suffered the most pain I'd ever experienced, I both gained and lost something. I lost my ability to speak, but gained power. And I try to use that power for good... I guess. She'd ended her last statement on an uncertain note, for she had long since lost her true perception of what was good and what wasn't. It had been ages since her moral compass worked right, it seemed. |

As Zane listened he wondered what had caused the loss of her voice. It was probably what she was referring to when she said she had lost something but gained power instead. It made him wonder if that was how meta humans were made. If it was some sort of trauma-trigger. Maybe it was only true for a few people. She didn't share his view of the world or the city. That didn't really matter to him as few people did. Still, she seemed to be a decent person, and claimed to use her power for good. It gave him an idea. If he could hire her for his casino he would have a direct line into the minds of the criminals that came there to gamble. She could dig out an incredible amount of information. She seemed to dislike the gangs, so at least it was worth it to ask. "Good and bad are words I try to avoid, as they are only relative to each individual. I don't think we need those words, as I believe that people should have freedom to do what they want, as long as they don't cause each other suffering. It's the people who cause others pain that I'm fighting. Rapists, murderers, muggers. Anyone who inflicts physical or mental trauma on others. Them I want to punish." He was trying to give her an idea of what kind of man he was. He hoped she wouldn't dig too deep into his mind, as there were many things he wanted to keep to himself. He knew that if she agreed to work for him he would run the risk of her probing his mind whenever she wanted, but the idea of having a telepath work for him was too tempting to pass. He wondered how he could bring it up, but then decided to just ask. "You don't happen to need a job do you?" |
