| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? The streets were never safe. Mariko never forgot that - only a fool would - but she never worried too much. She felt that she was more than capable of defending herself. She knew how to put up a fight against any would-be assailant, although she mostly relied on her psychic powers. All it took was one powerful mental command; while it didn't always work due to the target's willpower warding off her influence, it typically threw them off just long enough for her to be able to get away. So as she walked the streets, she felt secure. Even while walking in the alley behind the FALLEN Night Club, taking a shortcut on her way home to the East Side Apartments. But it had been a mistake to feel so self-assured. In Niwa City, the one unspoken rule that most citizens knew was to always expect the unexpected. Always. They lurked in the shadows of the dark alley. And when Mariko was least expecting it, a group of thugs showed themselves. She was surrounded at once, with no way to escape. She had nowhere to run. "Well, well, what's a pretty little lady like you doing out here all alone?" one of the thugs sneered, stepping towards her. Mariko was about to link in and send a witty comeback into his mind, only to find that something was very, very wrong. Trying to reach into his mind was like slamming into a mental brick wall. She pulled back, her eyes widening slightly as she then tried to link into the minds of the others, seeing if it was perhaps only the one. Nothing. It was as if she had lost her psychic abilities altogether. And then it hit her. He was a meta. And his power was cancelling the powers of other metas. The realization sent a shock-wave of fear through her; just like that, she was helpless. Powerless. Weak. And here she was, surrounded by a group of thugs, many of which were wearing lecherous expressions as they looked at her. The man who had spoken to her, the leader of the group and the meta nullifying her powers, smirked as he grabbed her arm and pulled her closer. "What's the matter, babe?" he asked, raising an eyebrow while maintaining that smirk. "Cat got your tongue?" Oh, how Mariko hated that expression. She glared up at him, trying to pull away from his grasp. That made him tighten his powerful grip even further, to where Mariko let out a slight grunt of pain as his hand constricted her arm. "Mm, I love it when they play hard to get," the man murmured, wrapping his free arm around her waist and holding her to him. He moved in to forcibly steal a kiss, but Mariko had had enough. Summoning all her physical strength, she managed to shove him away, and then threw a quick jab to try and teach him a lesson. The blow connected, since it caught him off guard, and he staggered backwards as he rubbed his now-sore jaw. Then he looked at Mariko in disbelief, and she met his gaze with defiance in her silvery eyes. "You bitch!" he growled, raising his hand to backhand her as punishment. She moved quickly, ducking under his hand and throwing another punch, this time connecting with his stomach. He groaned, nearly doubling over. That was the cue for the rest of the thugs to move in on Mariko. She tried to fight them all off, but she was far outnumbered. There were too many of them, and they were all stronger than she was. This was a situation she had let herself walk into, and it wasn't one that she would be able to walk out of without help. While she no longer had a functioning tongue to form words with, her vocal chords were still intact. Her voice would be somewhat raspy after so long of a lack of use, but she prayed that it would be loud enough to be within earshot of someone nearby. She cried out, a wordless plea for help, hoping that someone would hear her. Because while she was normally loathe to admit to even herself that she needed help, there was no time for pride in a situation like this. |

The evening had been uneventful so far. Zane had only encountered some hungry homeless people. He gave them some money under the promise that it would be used for food and shelter, not drugs. He was bored. He had half a mind to call it a night and give Maho a surprise visit. He hadn't seen her in a few days, and was starting to miss her. Still, he'd better do one more sweep around the neighborhood, just in case. He bit on the filter of a new cigarette, and lit it with his zippo. As he walked past the FALLEN Night Club, he heard a faint cry for help in the alley. His immediate reaction to hearing the plea was to run into the alley to see what was going on. Muggers. Muggers and/or rapists. There were no other words to describe the men who were forcing the girl down, grabbing at her clothes to try and rip them off. The scene made Zane sick. His first instinct was to make a fireball appear out of the glow of his cigarette, but when he tried, he was unable to. It was like his ability was on the fritz. Unless... One of the people in the alley was a meta with the ability to cancel out other abilities. What a frustrating power. And he had no way of knowing if it was the girl or one of the thugs who wielded said power. It didn't really matter though. He was used to fighting without his ability. He had only recently discovered that he had a power, so he was much more used to using his fists. The men were too preoccupied with the girl to even notice that Zane was watching. There were five of them, each looking uglier than the last. No wonder they were trying to rape the girl, not one of them could ever get laid using their appearance. Zane would almost feel sorry for how hideous they were if it wasn't for the attempted rape taking place in front of him. He made his way to the two men who had their backs completely turned at him. He grabbed the sides of their heads, and slammed them together as hard as he could. They fell down unconscious. That got the attention of the other three. Zane narrowed his eyes and looked at the one who was clearly the leader of the group, taking a drag of his smoke. "That's no way to treat a lady." The man couldn't believe his eyes. Some street-thug looking gutterpunk had swooped in and taken down two of his men. He didn't know whether to be impressed or afraid. He was used to only attacking girls, so he didn't really have too much experience fighting guys. Still, two of his boys were still conscious, so they outnumbered him. He had probably only succeeded in taking down the other two because it was a surprise attack. Hopefully... "Stay out of this. What we do in our territory is none of your concern. Just walk away. Or better yet, join us. I'm a powerful meta y'know. I even have Yakuza connections. I have room for another lackey." Zane pushed his motorcycle goggles a bit higher on his forehead as he listened to the man. When he stopped talking Zane pretended to be really impressed. "Oh wow! A meta?! That's so cool! This is your territory? I'm so sorry Oh Great One, I had no idea. I would never have trespassed had I known that the King of all things Foul ruled this alley. And you're willing to take me on as your lapdog? I can be your slave? Really? You mean it? And you say you have Yakuza connections?" As he spoke he walked past the girl and closer to the leader. Then suddenly he kicked, hitting the man straight on the chest, throwing him back. The man fell to the ground, clutching his chest and looking at Zane angrily. Zane took the cigarette out of his mouth and tossed it, hitting the man in the face. "Like I give a fuck." |

The remaining two thugs diverted their attention from Mariko when Zane came to the rescue. They stood in a defensive stance, though they didn't move to defend their leader in any way. And as they were distracted, Mariko slowly sat up, raising one hand to gingerly rub her throat. Her vocal chords really were suffering from a lack of use; her throat was hurting from that one cry, and she had just barely been audible outside of the alley. Nothing to be done about that, seeing as how she seldom had the opportunity or cause to use her true voice rather than her mental one. She was also trembling. She would have tried to stop it, but it was out of her control. She was shaken up by what had almost happened - as anyone would be - and she simply felt helpless without her abilities. However, she wasn't totally helpless. She moved into a crouch, and with one low kick she managed to knock one of the thugs off his feet. She then sprang up to her feet as the other then tried to grab her, maybe get to restrain her. But a swift knee to the most sensitive place put that out of the question as he fell over, rolling about and yowling in pain. Meanwhile, the leader managed to regain some of the breath that had been knocked out of him by the kick as he staggered back to his feet. "You... You punk..." he grunted, his already not-so-handsome features contorted in anger. He raised his fists as he took on a combative stance, as he clearly hadn't taken enough punishment already. "You wanna go, huh?! I'll fuckin' beat your ass!" |

Zane noticed the girl take down the two thugs behind him. He smiled. At least she knew how to handle herself in a fight. Well, when she wasn't outnumbered 5-to-1. The leader of the bunch clearly hadn't had enough, as he rose to his feet and shouted threats at Zane. Empty threats surely. Zane was a 5th Dan Taekwondo user, so he was exceptionally good with hand-to-hand combat. And who was this street thug? A nobody. A nobody that happened to be born with an annoying power. The man attacked, and Zane moved slightly out of the way, grabbing one of the man's fingers. He bent it backwards until a 'snap' was heard, indicating that the finger was broken. The man howled in pain, falling to his knees. Zane moved behind him and grabbed his head with both hands. The man was now completely at his mercy. Zane wasn't a killer unless he absolutely had to, but he was seriously contemplating breaking his neck. The man's ability was extremely dangerous. Being able to cancel out other meta abilities was an extremely valuable power. If the man indeed did have Yakuza connections the Yakuza could use him against the other gangs. Zane didn't like the idea of any gang getting leverage over the other gangs. The only forces in Niwa he wanted to see grow in strength were the N.C.P.D. and the Vanguard. And since he wasn't exactly a member of the Vanguard he had no way to contact them. Well, that wasn't exactly true. He could contact them through Maho, but he didn't exactly want to call her right now and explain the situation. It would be a lot less trouble to just kill him. He sighed before breaking the man's neck. The body fell limp to the ground. He hoped the girl wouldn't think less of him for committing murder right in front of her, but he hadn't exactly had a choice. Not that it really mattered what she thought about him. Zane had never cared what other people thought. Most people automatically assumed that he was a street rat himself, given his thug-like appearance and clothing style. He had been discriminated against so much he was immune to it. Of course he still got pissed off when people were obvious about it, but usually he wasn't bothered. He looked at the girl. "Are you ok?" |

Once the two thugs were down, Mariko turned to look at Zane and the leader. She watched as Zane killed him effortlessly. And her expression betrayed no shock or fear; not even dismay. If anything, she seemed neutral, even indifferent to Zane's actions. It was clear that death was no stranger to her. She'd had her run-ins with it before; she'd witnessed murder before; she'd even had to commit the deed herself. Being part of the Wo Shing Society, she and the rest of the members were, at the least, acquaintances with death. She glanced down at her hands for a brief moment. They were shaking, so she clenched them into fists. But the rest of her was still trembling, her body still trying to recover from the shock of it all, even though her mind had already come to terms with it. She just couldn't believe how vain she had been, thinking that her powers would be all that she needed to defend herself out on these streets. She should have considered that there were metas out there with the ability to cancel other metas' powers. It was foolish to assume that one's powers would be enough to get by. Her gaze went to Zane at once when he spoke. She tried to link into his mind to answer, since the meta with the nullifying powers was now dead. She furrowed her brow in mild concentration as she felt her powers gradually falter back into being. As she usually did, she nudged the consciousness of the one she was going to be speaking to, to let him know that she was there in mental presence. I'm fine, she told him. Her mental voice was somewhat weak, though that was mostly due to her own mind adjusting after the brief period without her usual abilities. She paused a moment, temporarily averting her gaze before returning it to him. And... thank you... |

The girl didn't speak. Zane was surprised by this, but maybe she was in shock or something. Then he felt something press against his consciousness. His first instinct was to fight against it, and focus all his power on keeping the intruder out of his mind, but he realized it had to be the girl. The thugs were all unconscious or dead, so that was the only plausible explanation. He let her enter his mind, and heard her thoughts reassuring him that she was ok. Now he knew why she didn't speak. She was either used to only speaking telepathically, or she was a mute. Considering the muffled cry he had heard earlier, he assumed the latter. He walked over to her and offered her a hand to help her up. He was a bit taken back by her utter lack of emotion as he had killed the man in front of her. He feared that death was all-too normal in her day-to-day life. That would suggest that she was involved with a gang. These were only speculations of course, and he had no evidence to support the theory. He wondered if she could read every thought he was having. He really hoped she couldn't, but if she could there was nothing he could do about it. "No worries. I couldn't just stand by and let them rape you, or worse. I don't think anyone with a conscience could have." If she would accept his hand, he would help her up. If she got up by herself, he would simply lower his hand. "We should get out of here. I can escort you home if you want. There might be more like them on your way." He made his way through the alley. He reached for his pack of cigarettes, and lit himself a new cancer stick. He then remembered he had yet to introduce himself, and turned his head. "My name is Zane by the way. Zane Kazama." |

Mariko felt his mind pushing back at first, and wasn't all too surprised. Others had tried to keep her out in the past, as well. Some even succeeded in closing their minds off to her, which tended to make things especially awkward, with them thinking that she was trying to invade their minds and her unable to communicate and inform them otherwise. It was annoying, too, since all she was trying to do was, well... communicate. As such, it was a small relief to her when he allowed her in. She wasn't one to read through someone's every thought; even she had some respect for a person's privacy. Whatever she overheard couldn't be helped, but usually it was a conscious decision to start prying into someone's thoughts, mostly if she needed to gather information. However, she could sense that the gears in the man's mind were turning, and she picked up on the fact that he was wondering about her lack of emotion - though she went no further as far as listening in on his thoughts. She started wondering herself, had she forgotten how to experience emotions? No; she very distinctly felt fear when she was attacked and left without her powers. But it seemed that it took something so extreme in order to elicit an emotional response of any sort. Had she been so hardened by her time in the Wo Shing, that her own emotions were few and far in between? ...Maybe. When Zane approached her offering a helping hand, she looked up at him for a long moment before she gently placed her hand in his and allowed him to help her up. Normally, she might have declined, but she had already swallowed her pride, and it was a tad too soon for it to come back up just yet. I would say that I don't need an escort, she thought to him, but after what I just went through, I think it would be better to be safe than sorry. And, my name is Mariko. She paused, averting her gaze once more. It almost seemed as if she wanted to say something more, but wasn't sure how to phrase it, or perhaps if she should even say it at all. She normally said only what needed to be said, and whatever was on her mind probably wasn't something that truly needed to be said, she ended up telling herself. |

Zane was surprised that Mariko didn't give her first and last name, as was customary in Japan. Still, he wasn't one to insist that someone followed tradition. Doing so would make him a hypocrite, as he himself rarely followed traditional Japanese customs. Something seemed to be on Mariko's mind however, and he couldn't help but assume that it had something to do with him. Zane felt that people should always speak their mind if there was something to be said, or in Mariko's case... Thought. "That's not all you wanted to say is it?" He used the word 'say' despite her not being able to speak physically because he was certain that she considered what she did to communicate as talking, and he respected that. That was also why he spoke out loud back instead of thinking what he wanted her to hear, to maintain her... Illusion that they were having a normal conversation by normal means. It wasn't meant to be condescending or pitying. He just figured it was what she'd want. Of course it was just an assumption. A theory even, as he didn't know the girl from Eve. He had never seen her before, which was strange as he often walked around this neighborhood in search of criminals to punish, and she seemed to know the neighborhood well since she had decided to take a shortcut. Perhaps they had just always missed each other. Probably. When they had reached the end of the alley, Zane followed Mariko's lead, as he didn't know where she lived. He kept his eyes on their surroundings, not wanting them to be caught off guards like Mariko had earlier. Zane wanted to think he was smarter than that. He wasn't really, as he actively sought out danger, but at least he knew what he was doing. ...Sort of. |

Whether or not he realized it, his use of the word 'say' was another small thing that Mariko appreciated. In this city where hardly anything could be considered 'normal' - especially in Mariko's case - anything that helped to give a sense of normalcy was not taken for granted. But at the same time, she didn't like that he'd been able to pick up on the fact that she had something else on her mind. Was she really that easy to read? Had she let slip a thought she didn't want him to hear? Or was he simply more observant than she had assumed he might be? Either way, she let out a silent sigh before she answered. I was thinking about how... lucky I was that you happened to be nearby when I was attacked. When they showed up, and I didn't have my powers... She trailed off, finding it difficult to find the words to describe just how she'd felt in that moment. There were no words to really describe it, and so she made do by showing him images: memories of the moment, in first-person perspective. The instant she realized her powers were gone, and was that much weaker just like that... it had been a moment of terror for her. The images were brief, flickering through his mind just long enough to get the point across. While she was transmitting those memories, however, her gaze was locked onto his. Once the exchange was over in a matter of seconds, Mariko broke the eye contact. I was stupid to think that I'd always be able to rely on my powers. I need to learn how to defend myself properly, so what happened, won't happen again... She stared down at the ground now as she walked, her expression cold and unreadable as she started sinking deeper into thought. She knew that she was capable of fighting. She knew basic punches, kicks, and a few defensive moves. But that wasn't enough. That wouldn't enable her to defend herself in anything beyond relatively harmless street fights. She needed more extensive knowledge on self-defense, in order to be able to prevent another situation like this from happening. She wasn't going to let herself be the damsel in distress anymore. Not again. Edited by Karin, Feb 1 2014, 10:50 PM.

As the images flashed inside Zane's mind, he felt an emotion he hadn't allowed himself to feel in a very long time. Fear. Her fear, to be exact. It was enough to make his body shiver slightly. Still, it got him thinking. Yes, her fear had taken over and controlled her, but feeling the emotion again made Zane realize that fear can actually be a powerful ally, if controlled properly. If you don't let it eat at you fear can be a motivator for survival. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to allow himself to be afraid more often. Maybe. Just maybe, if the situation demanded it. Since he hadn't felt it in a long time, the emotion was like a stranger to him, and he wasn't sure how he felt about having been introduced to it again. The last time he had been truly terrified was the night his parents were murdered. He remembered that he was with a mind-reader, and immediately stopped thinking about it. She mentioned needing to learn to defend herself properly. Zane was a 5th Dan Taekwondo practitioner, so he had a lot to teach. But he wasn't sure how his Master would feel about Zane taking in an apprentice. His Master's Taekwondo was unique to himself and Zane, and learning it was a life-long commitment. Still, he could teach her the basics of normal Taekwondo, and they could work their way up from there. If she was really interested in learning to defend herself. "This just might be your lucky night. I train at a Taekwondo dojo, and am close to mastering the art. I can teach you the basics if you want, and we can work our way up from there. Not tonight obviously, but whenever you have time. The name of the dojo is Tamaka Dojo. I think we are in the phone book, so you should be able to find the address just fine. I'm usually there during the weekends." He emphasized the word 'weekends', to make it clear to her to only come then. One session with his Master would kill her instantly. Despite being old and small, the geezer was scary powerful, and had almost killed Zane on a few instances when he forgot to hold back his power. Zane reached into his pocket for a cigarette and lit it, taking a drag as he walked by Mariko's side along the street. Edited by Impulse, Feb 1 2014, 05:30 PM.
