| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? [NOBUO HASEGAWA] It was cold. Really cold. Below freezing, really. The only reprieve from the useless sun, the icy breeze, the unbearable snow, and the overall frigid atmosphere was something warm. Though it was a weekday, many of Niwa's workers had opted to spend the day at home during the inclement weather. For once, the streets of Niwa were not full of noise and metal. More specifically, Bakuhatsu Park was empty, save for the few passerby citizens who wanted a glimpse of the man-made lake frozen solid. A few of the kids were smart enough to realize that they could go ice skating without having to pay. But for the most part... the park was empty. Now, for Hanzo's Noodle Shack... that was different. Within the confines of the small building, nearly a dozen people were laughing happily to the sound of old Japanese folk songs blaring on the terrible low-quality radio. Beneath the wooden roof was a stand filled with hot noodles and bundled up men and women eating the best some of the best food in Niwa. At least that's why Nobuo often came. This was his second home away from home--aside from work. During his breaks he would stow himself away into the warm broth and chow down with his coworkers or himself. Today, he had invited someone special over. A girl. Except that this girl was not what you thought she was. The last the two met, Nobuo had unofficially inducted Shaeris into CRASH. He had given her a big dose of reality, and the two had not met since. So to break the ice, Nobuo had called Shae out. He sat at the part of the noodle bar opposite a loud crowd of elderly Japanese men drinking and dancing to the music of the radio. As per being respectful, Nobuo had yet to order his food. He was a crooked cop, but he knew his manners. |

Shae straightened her uniform, for what it was worth. It was perfect, it was always perfect. Even more so now. Heightened sense would have been the bane of any clean freak. Thankfully Lieutenant Forestward was not a clean freak. She was a different kind of freak all together. Peter, Jon and Tore had not been open with what happened her at the end of last month. Somehow putting that she died onto her police record did not seem quite right. There were few police officers she had a reason to socialise with outside of Lyn. But Nobuo was one of them ~ as strange as that seemed. Officer Hasegawa was exactly what someone expected when the image of a police officer came to mind. Even if Shae was aware of some of his less than desirable habits. Dirty cops was an occupational hazard of sorts. Before she joined CRASH her world had been black and white. Now, it was shades of grey and she was somewhere on the darker side of that scale. The first thing which may have stood out was her complete lack of cold weather clothing. So she didn’t feel the biting cold anymore. She was immune to the effects of snow and ice ~ for the most part. Tore had been filling her in on the details, the pros and cons. So long as she stayed well fed. Speaking of well fed, she could smell the noodle shack from the second she stepped out of the unmarked car, her dark hair falling unbound down her back, the blood red eyes scanning over everything and everyone until she found who she was looking for. There was something predatory in her, the way she moved, the way she regarded the people around her that seemed to melt away the moment she focused on Nobuo. It might have been the awkward lopsided smile ~ at least until she remembered her canines were showing slightly. Then it was a tight lipped smile. “Hey, I got your message.” She didn’t look remotely cold. Business pants, white shirt... she could have been standing in the middle of a climate controlled office. One positive effect death had on her, Shae was a lot more extroverted and what had once been awkward was slipping into the realms of attractive. It had been a while... |

"Holy crap. You look like death." Nobuo wasn't very good with words. It was almost surprising how he even managed to get married at some point in his life. "Come on, sit down. My treat." He gesticulated, his arm waving at Shae and flagging her down to the seat beside him. He was dressed in a crisp white dress shirt with suspenders and brown slacks--he was off duty today but Nobuo was a man who enjoyed being in clothes of a working man. His coat was behind him, hanging off the coat rack hanging right behind him against the wall. Nobuo shifted his gaze to the old man Hanzo and gestured his fingers at the man. "Hey Hanzo, get my friend here a hot bowl of ramen and a cold beer!" Hanzo, silent as ever, obliged and went to preparing a bowl. Nobuo, smiling as a reply to Hanzo's compliance, sat back on his stool and looked over to Shae. "How ya been, kid?" |

She did look like death and it took all her willpower not to laugh. But it was all the echoes of the life she use to have and Shae refused to spoil it. Nobuo was the first friend she had made in the department. Although, friend may have been too strong a word. He had never picked on her, never pointed out how awkward she Slipping into the booth across from the older officer, Shae tried to look inconspicuous. Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen any time soon... Nobuo may remember the strange girl from the basement but that wasn’t the woman sitting across from him now. “I’ve been good.” Her smile didn’t seem so out of place, but she didn’t stare right at him. The colour of her eyes unnerved even her at times. “Settling into the promotion.” It was no secret that she was Valenco’s Lieutenant. Basement tech, to Special Victims and then C.R.A.S.H. If it was anyone else it would have seemed like a Cinderella story. The bowl was set down in front of her by the silent Hanzo and Shae couldn’t help but eye it. Food, yeah... she was going to throw it up within an hour. But it was a small price to pay for keeping up appearances. “How have you been? How is Ayame?” It might have sounded like small talk on the surface, but Shae had a soft spot for kids and Nobuo’s daughter was a sweetheart. There was an underlying sense that there was more to Nobuo calling her out of the blue for dinner and a catch up, but she wasn't in any kind of hurry to work out what that was. He would come out with it when he was ready. |

"Hahaha" Nobuo let out a boisterous laugh at the mention of his daughter. He was very proud of her, after all. "My little angel is doing well as always! Thanks for asking--I'll let her know that you said hello." Nobuo's eyes averted from Shaeris's only when Hanzo returned with Nobuo's dish as well. Nobuo let out a satisfied sigh. "Thanks, Hanzo. You make the best noodles in all of Niwa!" Nobuo was in a great mood, it seemed. With his hand he grabbed the chopsticks and prepped them for the meal in front of him, picking up a swathe of noodles and blowing on them lightly so that he wouldn't burn his tongue. "You climbed the ladder real quick, kid. Good to see the unit's in good hands." A part of Nobuo resented Shaeris. Why hadn't he been promoted? He had dedicated himself to the department for so long. He had clocked in the hours and kissed the right asses, yet he didn't climb--not nearly as quickly as Shaeris did. Oh well. There were other ways to benefit from this. "Make sure you always have time to see this old man between all your brunches with the suits." The hierarchy of the NCPD. While CRASH was a respected department, their own personal agenda meant nothing in the scope of the city. The NCPD as a whole was a behemoth that had a stranglehold on a huge chunk of the city. "If that Cyclops gives you any trouble," He said, referring to Valenco, "You let me know and I'll do whatever I can to get that sumbitch filing papers all day behind a desk. A punishment far worse than death. I would know--I hated those two years I worked the cubicle." With that, Nobuo took a satisfying bite of his ramen noodles, enjoying each and every flavor that the strange old man had cemented into his broth. It was a work of art. "Anyways, I was wonderin' if you can pull some strings for me." He reached into his breast pocket and took out a folded pack of paper. He flopped the wrinkled packet onto the bartop. His voice shifted toward a much more serious one. "I figure that if you're up for another promotion, there's something I've heard through the grapevine." Nobuo didn't like to disclose his sources--he just knew things and expected people to believe him wholeheartedly. "There're some Xin Hoppers stashing some big shit--you know, the ones fighting with those other chinks in Chinatown. I don't know what it is, but word on the street that they're, like, trying to hide whatever goodies they can. Once this little war between the Chinese blows over, they're going to come back and pick it all up and continue like nothin' ever happened." For a moment, Nobuo grinned. He felt so sly and so clever upon finding this information. "There shouldn't be many people guarding the stash. We can go in, bust it up, do the city some good.... and maybe get ourselves a nice bonus. What do you think, boss?" |

“It isn’t all brunches with the suits.” Shae winced at the thought, C.R.A.S.H. was a lot more hands on and the division of rank was in place without the formalities. People weren’t saluting her and addressing her by position. It may have sounded glorified, but realistically it was just an extra large serving of responsibility and accountability. Nobuo was the one who had convinced Shae to join C.R.A.S.H. in the first place, it was strange to see the over protective side of him. As for Nobuo himself, his transfer was still waiting final authorisation for the move across to C.R.A.S.H. Something about needing to wrap up his caseload for a handover to another officer. But then the conversation took a turn down into one of those dark alleyways Shae was making a point to avoid. It was the same kind of crap he had pulled on the Red Eye bust. Not for a second did she think this little job of his was legitimate or by the book. “I’m not even going to ask how you came by that information.” Shae’s voice dropped a few degrees into something far colder. He didn’t need to be a rocket scientist to figure out that she wasn’t impressed. She slipped her phone out of her pocket and placed it on the table. “Vi, I need to you dispatch two of the Officers on duty. I have a tip off that there is a weapons stash we need to go and collect on.” Her eyes never left Nobuo’s as she spoke, her gaze all but pinning him to the chair. “I’ll send you the address in a moment.” “Acknowledged, Lieutenant Forestward.” Vi’s voice responded. “Also, finalise Nobuo Hasegawa’s transfer to CRASH.” She didn’t need Vi to respond a second time, Shae didn’t need Vi to respond at all. Making the call had been for Nobuo’s benefit. He needed to get his priorities straight. He was either a cop, or just another thug lining his own pockets. This was the second time he had a tip off about the Xin Hop activities that Shae knew about. How much more information was Nobuo privy to? If he was going to continue down that path he wouldn’t make the same mistake again thinking that Shae was corruptible. Not for a pay day. “If you want to join in the operation...” The offer was a little harsh, even for her. She was prepared to play this one down, write it off as an error in judgement on Nobuo’s behalf. Moving him to C.R.A.S.H. was just another way of keeping an eye on his activities. |

So you meet a nice girl. You think she's a good girl. You think she's got what it takes. You take her under your wing and you push her as much as you can to what you think her potential can do for her. Then she goes on and shits all over your work. Nobuo's eyes remained steady on Shae's as she made the call. There was a wave of mixed emotions washing over the man's face. First, the casual happiness that came with his original offer. Then, the uneasiness at her phone being taken out--why would she need it anyways? Following that was the feeling of intensity. Was she really? Yeah. She was. She was calling it in. This was his bust! This wasn't hers to spoil, nor to distribute all over. Finally, a feeling of anger came over the man, but it was suppressed by his wit. And she had the audacity to offer him a position with C.R.A.S.H.? The paperwork had not gone through, but Nobuo knew that he was already a shoe-in for the spot. With Shae in power and enough credentials to not make the higher-ups think otherwise, Nobuo figured that he was guaranteed the spot, but this move proved to be... complicating. "You're gonna burn yourself out trying to clean the streets, you know." Nobuo played off the disruptive and disrespectful move by Shaeris. Already, she had succeeded beyond him within the department. Another young kid who hasn't been in the game, trying to dictate Nobuo's moves. But, because she was a good girl--she came to Ayame's party, after all--Nobuo gave her the benefit of the doubt. She was just naive. She was just foolish. Soon she'll figure out the way the world works, Nobuo thought. "'Course I'm in." He snapped at the woman, taking a bite from his noodles. "I signed up to do good for this city. You can believe me on that one, Shae." The definition of that, though, was up for interpretation. "Sign me up. You can count on me, Lieutenant." It seemed like Shae wasn't exactly the woman that Nobuo wanted her to be. That was fine with the old man, though; not everyone was willing to operate in the dark like he was. |

Shae was going to make sure that he got all the glory and the credit for whatever they found at the warehouse ~ and he could have the Internal Affairs inquiry if his report didn’t add up at the end of it. His confirmation that he was in had been all the Lieutenant had needed. Pushing away from the table and standing up she settled Nobuo with a look that suggested they needed to be going ~ now. How long had he been sitting on this information for? How old was it? Had he even confirmed the warehouse was housing munitions? He would have been halfway through another mouthful when she finally spoke. “Lets go then.” There was one thing Nobuo was right about, she had burned herself out trying to clean the streets. Thankfully it wasn’t public knowledge that her pulse wasn’t exactly what it use to be. “My car is parked at the end of the park, or you can take your own.” The phone in her hand bounced the information on who Vi had assigned to investigate the warehouse. “Three CRASH officers are on their way out there.” Two of the names on the report Vi bounced through Shae had no issue with. The other was their untested rookie. That was about to change. This was how she operated, and no amount of seniority in years could outrank her anymore. It was time for Nobuo to step up, or stay and enjoy his noodles. Not everyone was a field cop. Shae had been evidence enough of that. She had been able to accomplish far more from behind a desk than she had ever done in the field, but with Vi running the technical side Shae only had one place left to be. Turning away her feet carried her in the direction of the vehicle she had just parked ten minutes earlier. There was a job that needed to be done and she was going to do it right. |
