| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? Happening the same time as the events in Head of the Snake31st December 2013 2359 hours Chinatown ~ The Prosperous Garden The City seemed to hold its breath only one more minute to go. One more minute until Niwa erupted into fireworks and celebrations. Even the residents of Chinatown ~ though, the Chinese New Year was always a bigger event in these parts. But when in Rome... or when in Japan. The sentiment was the same. Wraith’s shadow form darkened along the outer walls as he shifted closer to the festivities within the Garden. The Empress had not said a word to him since that night, since the night he had slammed her against the wall and made his stance on all things relating to Scarlett abundantly clear. For a time she had respected that. Xifeng had kept her distance... that was until tonight. The order was clean, precise and left no room for interpretation. The old men had sat in their comfortable seats long enough... they did not want war, they were not prepared for it. They wanted to cower behind their titles and their wealth. If it had not been for Jin Tsui’s insistence that the threat, this threat was very real, she would have already slaughtered every last one of them. But the man never let up, he never let his guard down. Wraith had seen as much, he knew the Triad chairman as well as any man could without ever having met him face to face. He was, in the shade’s opinion, one of the single remaining shred of honour and dignity the Tai Yeung leadership had left. The rest were aging cowards... Thankfully they were about to stop aging. Jin Tsui was off limits, under pain of death no one was to touch him... she wanted him brought before her in chains, the Empress wanted nothing more than to gloat over her impending victory. And Jin, the Chairman was to be her trophy. Stuffed and mounted if she so desired. The Tai Yeung celebrated, already well into their drink while the entire of the Xin Hop force lurked in the shadows surrounding the Prosperous Garden. They only waited for the first firework to be let loose into the clear night sky. They were going to lay waste to everything that moved. There were going to be losses, heavy losses to both sides. But Xifeng was already moving her pieces into position to secure everything which had once belonged to the Tai Yeung. As for those old men, she had yanked on the leash of her shadow pet to slaughter each and every last one of the Aunts and Uncles before delivering Jin to her. |

Miranda was never one for rich people parties. Sitting around with scotch and cigars talking about money, the skulk threw way better parties with no money at all. At least there were fights there, fuck this was like watching old people get bed sores. 'Jin sends his regards.' She had been sent in his place as security to make sure nothing said was unknown to the chairman. It was easy to get overconfident and forget your security when they were a shadow in the room. It was an order to be there and watch over them, and she did not disobey a direct order. She suppressed a sigh, couldn't someone at least rock in their chair? Raise their voice? Throw a glass? Something to tell her that she wasn't stuck in a temporal loop and she would be standing in that corner, quietly out of sight, for years. |

Uncle Pig Ears had just arrived; he wasn’t one to celebrate with the other members of the council. While the other uncles seem to have forgotten their roots, Pig Ears still embraced them wholeheartedly. He did not fool himself thinking himself to be a wise man or even a cultured one. He was as boisterous, as violent as in his youth. He demanded of his people their very best, and nothing more, and would often solve problems himself. A very direct and large man that butted headed with every one of the council, the chairman included, several times. This time the Chairman had found him an invaluable ally in his war against those horrible Xin Hops. He and Auntie Silk were the most vocal in fighting these foreigners off. Even if the council “officially” decided not to pursue war, it didn’t deter Pig Ears in the least. He gave his greetings and paid his “respects” to his peers. He couldn’t stand those cowards. He took on an entire platter of food from a server’s hand, and made his way towards Jin’s stand-in. Unlike the other fools, Pig Ears knew what was going on. He was against the… quiet nature, preferring an all-out war, but abdicated, really… all that mattered was that the Xin Hops were dealt with and that it was known it was all the work of the Tai Yeung. “Pfft, you look as bewildered as me.” He said as he offered her some food from the platter he took. Small bite size Chinese delicacies. “I remember a time when New Years was about getting piss drunk, shooting our guns and beating the crap out of each other.” He said with an annoyed sigh as e looked around. It felt so disgraceful watching these once boisterous womanizers, turn into such…. Caricatures. “How’s the security? Those Xin Hops were brazen enough to attack our fucking chairman, yet these fools found it a good idea to do this in the open. The fucking arrogance…” Pig Ears snatched an entire bottle from a passing server, and opened it with his teeth as he began to down it. |

1st january 2014 0000 hours ~ Happy New Year Wraith closed his eyes, not that it altered his awareness of or the layout of the Prosperous Gardens. Most of the celebration was indoors, but the festivities had spilled out into the manicured gardens the restaurant was named for. He had sparred in that very garden with Scarlett, long before he knew who she was... what she was. The Empress’ voice echoed through his conscious mind, as though the first of the fireworks rising up into the night sky was not enough. ‘Kill every last council member and bring Jin to me alive.’ She had waited so long for them to make a mistake, for the Tai Yeung to leave themselves vulnerable. She had manoeuvred her pieces perfectly, met every challenge and overcome them as only a being possessed and driven by revenge could. That the Council was made up of aging men meant nothing to the Empress. They were nothing but casualties to her ambition. And the civilians who had poured into the garden to celebrate that night... Wraith only needed to kill nine people and capture another. But there had been no sign of Jin Tsui... The Chairman was the prize at the end of the night. With any luck he would get caught in the crossfire and save himself from what the Empress had planned. On cue the people still within the restaurant moved to the windows to get a better view of the fireworks about to start exploding over the downtown area and even more over the waterfront. The city had spared no expense. Not even the dim mood lighting within the Restaurant was going to be enough to stop Wraith. The shadow armour began to encase around his form and solidify. The twin blades forming in his hands. If he believed in gods the shade would have prayed to them. But there would never be redemption for the lives he had taken or the ones he was about to take. The instant the first firework exploded in a beautiful shower of gold the Xin Hop men ran into the garden and forced their way into the front of the restaurant in a shower of bullets, the ring of gunfire, a perfect accompaniment to the fireworks. It had not been intended for the fireworks to mask the sound of the automatic weapons tearing apart the restaurant and the people contained within indiscriminately. Screams and chaos, that was what followed and the sounds of the weapons the only thing which seemed to silence the screaming. Wraith’s destination was the first floor balcony overlooking the gardens. He materialised directly out of the shadows behind Uncle So, the shadow blade instantly robbing him of his life, quickly, cleanly... he would not have felt any pain, the shade did not need to be a monster. There was a sickening feeling pooling in the pit of where Wraith’s stomach should have been. He knew everything that there was to know about the Council members, he knew their fears as well as their hopes and dreams. The two bodyguards which had been standing in the room began to crumple in on themselves over the wounds inflicted by the other shadow blade before Uncle So’s body had hit the ground. Grandfather Tsang rose from his seat, his eyes falling on the shadowed assassin as he stepped forward and pulled the sword from Uncle So’s lifeless body. There were no words the aging man could have given. There was a silent understanding of what the shadow creature was and what he had come to do. He closed his aging eyes and accepted what came next. Killing an old man should have been easy, but it tore at Wraith’s new found humanity to do it. He did not let Grandfather Tsang’s body slump to the ground, he gently lowered him with all the respect the man had commanded in life. The third of his bodyguards burst through the door on the balcony in time to take in the scene, he pointed his gun at Wraith and pulled the trigger into the empty space the shadow had just occupied. |

"I'm not a big fan of fancy, quiet parties either." Miranda answered, picking a piece of food from the plate. "Fireworks, drunken fights, occasionally blood sport. The new years parties back in America were certainly something to look forward to. All I see here is rich people smoking and talking about how rich they are. Something interesting needs to happen before I smash my head through a wall." When gunfire suddenly erupted outside, she drew her guns. "Not quite what I had in mind!" She said, turning to Uncle pig ears. "Stay with me." Across the room, Uncle So and his personal guards were cut down. Her eyes widened in horror, that had been the man who had brought her into the triads and looked after her until she found her own place. "You MOTHER FUCKER!" She yelled, raising her guns and opening fire on him. "Run!" She called to any of the council members who were still alive at this point. Even if this man killed her, she was there to protect the council whether she liked them or not, and she was loyal enough to Jin that she would follow his orders to the end. The two clip fed handguns would be a good suppressor, but they wouldn't hold the guy off forever. |

Pig Ears laughed wholeheartedly at Miranda’s reply. “A woman after my own heart! You shou-“ Before Pig Ears could go in another rant about the olden days, shots were fired, and they were under siege. A stray bullet shattered the wine bottle he held by the neck, and his anger increased by tenfold, as he got down on the ground to avoid any more strays. He looked up his coat, but damn it… no gun. “So! No…” Pig Ears gasped as he saw his comrade in arms get taken down so swiftly and effortlessly. What truly hit him at its core was Tsang. The retired old man… He was the gang’s grandfather, everyone paid his respect to him, and the way he accepted death was both beautiful and tragic. He gave his life away to give the young ones the time regroup. Pig Ears stood up again, so the others could see he was still alive and well. He looked at Miranda as she ordered him to run. No… Pig Ears doesn’t run. “Run?! I’ll be damned if I let any of these Xin Hops bastard the satisfaction of seeing my backside!” He retorted as he began to order his men around, calling them by their first names, ordering them to fight back. Pig Ears was the one that smuggle them and handled illegal Chinese immigrants. He gave them jobs, money and often a place to stay. They earned pennies, but they never went to bed with an empty stomach or in the cold. He knew each and every one that was brought to the Tai Yeung to serve as enforcers. A people’s uncle. He noticed Uncle Rat pinned down behind a dining table, and Pig Ears went to his aid. The gunners never saw this behemoth of a man run up to them, and pummel them with his bare fists. How long as it been since he last fought directly? Feeling his aching knuckles brought back such sweet memories, but now was not the time to dwell in the past. He went over to where the Rat was. “Th-th-they’re here! Th-those disrespectful… assholes…” The Rat said with a stammer. “Oy! Bring yourself together, old man!” “Everything… To attack us at New Year’s eve….” “Old man!” Pig Ears tried to get through to Uncle Rat who could not believe such… disrespect. He was still in shock, not yet having acknowledged what had happened. He was one of the original founders of the Tai Yeung. He took care of the money flow, and gambling. Even at during the most violent of times, Uncle Rat stayed through to his name and avoided most of the conflicts, but even a rat bites back when brought to a corner. Was he foolish in trying to avoid all out war? Were his fears clouding his judgment? “Rat!” Pig Ears yelled as he rested his hands on his shoulders, and the Rat snapped back to reality. “This is my fault… Had we fought back sooner…” Pig Ears slapped Uncle Rat. “Not too late! Damn it, Rat! Let’s show these Xin Hops that they don’t fuck around with the Tai Yeung! The council is to be feared and respected, and we’ll show them why, you hear me?!” The Rat nodded, and suddenly his eyes shifted to the side, as he took out his handgun, and shot a Xin Hop that tried to sneak up on them. “Damn Straight, and it’s Uncle Rat. You disrespectful Pig!” Uncle Rat snapped back. |

C.R.A.S.H. Headquarters. The alarm suddenly ripped through the entire C.R.A.S.H. building. It wasn’t the fire alarm, the sound was different for one, but it trigged like it was. A second later Vi’s voice echoed through every intercom in the building. “All available officer requested to respond. High levels of gang violence located at the Prosperous Gardens. Shots fired, multiple civilian and gang member casualties.” Every monitor, tablet and smart phone within the building currently connected to Vi’s system would have splashed the live feed coming in from one of the intersection cameras. The camera was designed to snap a photograph of some guy speeding through the intersection, but from the angle it had no problems at all displaying multiple men with automatic weapons opening fire on the Chinatown restaurant. “Additional support and S.W.A.T. units are on standby.” They were on standby because Vi did not have the authority to deploy them directly. That limitation had been one of her first protocol shackles. Unless it had been the C.R.A.S.H. building under siege. In the silence that followed the members of the anti meta and gang unit would have no problem hearing the gunfire from four blocks away. It would have taken over 15 minutes for the main precinct to respond, but Captain Valenco’s unit could have been fully prepped and on site within 5. It had been part of the reason the C.R.A.S.H. building was located within the heart of Chinatown. Shae had been in the basement with Tore at the time. They were discussing the reappropriation of space for both Vi’s systems, his Lab needs and enough space left over for the shooting range and armoury. The Basement was about to become the working heart of the entire C.R.A.S.H. building, which meant Shae needed to implement additional security protocols. She was still trying to come to terms with everything she had become and would have been useless to the other members on the ground. In a fraction of the time it would have normally taken her, Shae crossed the room to the intercom. “Captain, I can coordinate our efforts from here. I just need eyes out there.” The Prosperous Garden Wraith’s eyes narrowed at Miranda. If he had not already been slipping between the shadows and reality her bullets would have ripped right through him. She had quickly proven herself to be a threat worth his attention. As instantly as he had vanished a shadow solidified beside the Chairman’s appointed representative. He had little reason to pay Miranda much attention over the last few months. She was a bodyguard, a damn good one... but not a shot caller. No sooner had the shadow beside her solidified into Wraith’s image, the twin blades sliced down aimed directly for Miranda. A second shadow assailant beginning to form beside her, directly between her and the very men she would have protected. The third of his creations manifested beside Uncle Rat who seemed to have finally found his will to fight. It was his fault... if he and the other simpering old men had decided to fight it would never have come to this. The Empress would never have had her chance. The only difference between Wraith and his shadow assassins was their colour. Unlike their master, the shadowborn creatures remained black. There was little distance between the two uncles but Wraith managed to turn the older man around using his own shadow as a diversion. The twin blades held in his hands both sinking into Uncle Rat’s body the moment the real assassin appeared. The bullets from the gun the dying uncle had been wielding tore through the shadow assassin, shattering the solidified darkness and its form faded back into the darkened corners from where it had appeared. But the damage was done. The third of the council members slumped to the ground and Wraith turned his attention to Pig Ears. The Xin Hop men who had first entered the restaurant were being cut down as the surprise of the attack wore off and the Tai Yeung men and woman began to fight back, but they were still severely outnumbered and outgunned with too many non combatants to try and protect. Uncle Tao was giving orders to the Tai Yeung forces brining them into come kind of coherency, the bodyguards who had failed to save Grandfather Tsang, instead formed a protective circle around Grandfather Bao ~ they would not lose both of them to the Xin Hop Assassin. Every man there was prepared to lay down their lives to defend the remaining Council members. |

Miranda was outmatched in this mad house. She was good, but one good guard among a bunch of barely made it guards wouldn't be able to protect everyone. Soon she was a target as well as a shadow formed by her to bring down two blades on her. Thinking quickly she grabbed the knife from the scabbard on her back and took advantage of the serrated back to catch both swords in its notches as her gun raised to fire on the other assassin that had appeared. When he was effectively felled she heard the resounding click of an empty magazine. Hissing with irritation she went to plant her boot in the differently dressed assassin's chest while she still had his blades caught in her knife. Dropping the empty handgun she retrieved the revolver from her boot that was raised to kick, pointing it at the man she would have just pushed back to let off a couple rounds. If he retreated, she would take the precious moment to put fresh mags in her guns and if she had the time, replace the revolver bullets. The other triads were finally getting organized and fighting back, but uncle rat was now a casualty as well. At least he took on of the bastards with him. Now where was that bastard who got uncle so? She had multiple gunshot and stab wounds with his name on them. |

Pig Ears Everything happened so fast, the Rat’s keen senses were as sharp as ever when he turned suddenly to shoot down the distraction, but his old aging body couldn’t react properly to Wraith. The last thing he’d see would be the bloody blades stick out of his chest, and Pig Ears increasing glare. He was discarded and left in gravity’s embrace as the ground caught him in his fall. « Uncle Rat! » The Tai Yeung yelled. “Pig Ears! Run we’ll cover ya!” They pleaded knowing very well it would be in vain. The large man had a fierce glare on the shadow creature. He came to many realizations upon seeing him. The reason how the Xin Hops were able to gain so much territory and beat their Triad rivals so easily. It couldn’t be a coincidence, this party was heavily reinforced, yet this thing melded through them with relative ease. He couldn’t stand it as he realized that Uncle Rat may have spared them the biggest bloodbath to date. The Tai Yeung had large amount of members thanks to illegal immigration, but so many of their normal soldiers would’ve died…. He tightened the grip on his fists as he brought them up to his face. He let out a roar, as he threw his arms in front of him, and flexed his entire back, as his suit could not contain such masculinity and ripped at several places. He clutched the suit by the shoulder, and with one movement, he ripped it off. Pig Ears was a behemoth of a man. He was tall and large. The layer of fat was there to conceal his muscle mass within, and he didn’t get lazy in his advanced age. This wasn’t Uncle Pig Ears. This was the enforcer. The legendary man that survived a Korean ambush using his girth and fists alone. He brought up his arms to his sides, and opened his big palms as he slapped his chest. He was too pissed off to even utter a word, but he wanted the assassin to come to him that much was evident by his glare alone. Lyn D. Keell “Officer Lyn D. Keel Reporting in! Heading for Prosperous gardens!” The tall amazoness ad hopped in a nearby squad car, and took off on her own. Lyn wasn’t working that night, but hearing Vi’s call…. This is what police work was all about. Punching crooks, getting them in cuffs and locking them up! She got the chance to play with the vampire they caught, but beating a captured prisoner wasn’t as fun. She went by herself and drove recklessly as she got dressed in the cop squad, while driving fast, hooking up her SWAT gear. Edited by Wackman, Jan 9 2014, 07:51 PM.

The shadow assassin did not pursue Miranda when she retreated. It didn’t need to. Wraith had been watching how the bodyguard would fair. Curiosity for the most part, curiosity rolled into caution. He had not underestimated her, she was human. From head to toe, in Niwa that was usually considered a curse. How did she hope to hold her own against monsters? Quite well it seemed. She did not lack for determination or resourcefulness. The shadow she had emptied her clip into had shattered back into the darkness, but it reformed again almost as quickly. Easily grabbing hold of the bodyguard as she fell back from the first shadow assassin. Its grip was like iron, ripping her arms around her back and crushing her hands until she let go of the weapons. But that was all it did. Holding her captive as even the first entity which had attacked her turned its attention towards Uncle Pig Ears. Wraith had not just manoeuvred to get a clean shot at the Rat, he had managed to turn both uncles around. Leaving Pig Ears beating at his chest like an enraged gorilla. The assassin usually did not let himself feel, for the shade it was easier to do the things he was ordered to do if he did not care, if he did not feel sorrow or loss. But that was exactly what he felt. The Xin Hop men assaulting the restaurant were killing anyone and everyone who moved indiscriminately. Civilians, Tai Yeung... it was all the same to them. They were following the Empress’ orders, and for most ~ following those orders to their own graves. But the shadow felt the loss and utter waste of life just as keenly as Pig Ears did. Maybe that was why he aimed for the mercy of a swift death. For Pig Ears that mercy would not have come from Wraith’s blades directly. Miranda would have seen the whole thing from where she stood captive or fighting, there was nothing she could have done as the first shadow assassin stepped up behind Uncle Pig Ears and drove the twin blades home into the man’s chest. It was not as clean as Wraith would have been, but the first would have torn through his heart, the second destroying his lungs on its way to the same destination. ‘You are needed here, Slave. Now!’ The summon was unmistakable, undeniable. If the rest of the Council were going to die, it would not be by Wraith’s blades. There was just one last matter he needed to address. The shadow which held Miranda was not human, though it was the form it took. It did not have vulnerable places or weaknesses. It was a creature of shadow with no comprehension of pain beyond what it could have inflicted. Had Miranda continued to fight the assailant would have little hesitation in dislocating her shoulder to maintain the hold it had on her. Pig Ears would have still been staring down at the twin shadow blades protruding from his chest when Wraith slipped through the darkness to stand directly before Miranda in a single stride, gripping onto her chin and pulling her face up to meet his. There was no anger in his expression, no malice or triumphant glee. She alone would have seen the depth of his emotion for what was happening. The act he was committing and was powerless to stop. “Listen well, bodyguard.” His tone was just as dark as he was, echoing around them and through every shadow. “The Xin Hop know nothing of the escape tunnels which lead from the restaurant. Use them, save the rest of the Council.” She could take it or she could leave it. The fate of the Council was in her hands now. A heartbeat later Wraith vanished completely and with him the shadows, even the one which had held her captive, faded in his wake. |
