| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? “Lieutenant Forestward, be advised that Ms de’Oraelis in the holding cells requires medical attention.” There was nothing in Vi’s voice to suggest whether it was an emergency or not. She was so close to Shae, but there were always the slight voice infections which were off. “Is it an emergency?” The frown crossed Shae’s face as she turned to the monitors looking for the camera feed from the cells. “Ms de’Oraelis’ injuries are not life threatening.” “Injuries? Vi what happened?” No sooner had Shae asked the question images from the cameras in the training room splashed across the display. She did not realise that her hand was pressed over her mouth as the footage rolled. By the time stamp on the feed it had only just happened. Which meant Peter was still in the locker room. “Vi, have one of the other officer’s attend to Ms de’Oraelis, and I want you to lock down that video file, restricted access only.” “Confirmed.” Shae only just heard the confirmation, she was already out of the door and to the stairwell door. Taking the elevator would have taken too long, not that she had any idea what she was going to say or do. Something had just gone wrong... one step through the door and her eyes fell onto the space which made up the Training Room. The images were still there in her mind, like an overflow of her digital abilities. She knew Peter wasn’t there... Her feet carrying her towards the locker room and into the shower beyond if she needed to. |

Peter was still at his locker gathering shower supplies when Shae entered. He looked up, having retrieved and hung up his eye patch, so he still wasn't wearing it. His eye was open in the dim lighting of the locker room, so he could see her clearly. "Good afternoon, lieutenant. Were you wanting to use the shower? I can wait if you wanted to go on ahead." He didn't know why she was there, or that she had come specifically to see him. For all he knew she just needed to use the shower. "I'll make sure Jon knows not to go in as well, I'll make sure you have full privacy." Even when he tried to act human, it still seemed to come out roboticly. How far gone was he? |

Her hazel eyes instantly looked Peter up and down. She expected to see something, anything. An injury, a bruise coming up... but nothing. What she had seen had been all one sided. “Captain.” Not the word she wanted to use. “Peter, what just happened?” She ignored everything he had said as she stepped towards him. It was not fear, but concern which drew her brows together. “I mean I saw what happened... but why. Why would you do that to her?” Shae asked softly, there was nothing but compassion and confusion in equal measure in the usually bubble Lieutenant. There it was again, the same constricting of her chest Shae had been feeling a lot lately. She needed to believe that there was some kind of explanation, some reason. He was not a monster, but it was the echo of the man she remembered that day from the street, the man who had destroyed the Triad thugs shooting up the market place. That was the man she had seen in the video footage. |

He looked up at her, confused as he stood up straight. "Do that to her? We were sparring. Honestly I was impressed at her skills, simple brute force didn't work so I had to move up what I was using to match it. I didn't exactly expect her to come charging at me like that, so granted it may have been more than was needed. She was a good opponent, so I treated her as such. I didn't expect her to quit so quickly though." He was surprised that Shae had come to him afterward. Shae never really went to Lyn when she got into a fight to ask her why. Lyn tended to beat people to a pulp, he had simply overwhelmed his sparring partner. He really didn't know what the problem was. |

“Sparring?” There was a choking sound of disbelief in that single word. “It did not look like sparring on the footage. It looked like you attacked her and she was trying to defend herself.” There was almost no give and take in what Shae had seen, every time Peter had been the aggressor. Every time he had forced his opponent to react and respond because he had connected. “She is a person of interest in a murder investigation and she could have you up on assault charges while in police custody based on what is on that footage.” The words were coming out of her mouth but she wasn’t sure he understood them. It was not the same as Lyn or Jon beating down some thug for resisting arrest. “It was like watching you the day in the market...” Shae shook her head as though it was going to remove the images. That had been different, he had done that to protect her and Jon. She honestly believed that. |

"She refused to make the first move, so I did. If it was her intent to try and pull something like that I'm fairly sure you would have gotten audio of her agreeing to a spar. When she decided she was done, I made no further moves and went to the showers." The idea of Sephyr trying to pull something like that hadn't even come to mind. He breathed in sharply when she mentioned the day at the market. He had fought a small army that day to ensure she got out of there alive, and he was willing to use whatever methods necessary to make sure that happened. He got no joy out of it, but he felt no remorse since it was their lives or hers. Every kill haunted him, he was not proud of them. "Do you think I was proud of what I did that day? That I got joy out of killing those men?" His voice had a tension to it that she would certainly notice, but it was in no way threatening her. "The things I do to preserve the lives of my officers or those I am trying to protect are not things I am proud of, but they are things that need to be done. I'm already broken, I'm already on that path. The last thing I want is anyone having to do the things I've done or see the things I've seen. I do not fight for my own life anymore, it isn't worth protecting. I fight to stay alive long enough to protect a soul that hasn't been stained. That sparring match was nothing like what I'm capable of. If I intended to harm her, I would have broken her ribs that first blow I landed." |

Shae’s shoulders dropped slightly and she looked away. His words just seemed to roll over her one at a time. Peter may have thought his life was worth nothing, that he was worth nothing... but it was about time someone served it back to him. “We make choices, good or bad and we need to live with them. I have been there... I live there. I’ve been a shell of a person since my parents were murdered.” That detail was a fact for her, she refused to believe otherwise. “I do this job because I want to save the next little girl from growing up alone. If I could save just one person from knowing that pain, then my entire existence would have been worthwhile.” He wanted to protect her... it was past time he found out she wasn’t worth protecting. “I sabotage every personal relationship I have, I tell myself I am not ready or that it will never work out because I don’t believe that I deserve to be happy. I don’t think I am worth it. The only thing I have ever been good at is using a computer, because it is safe and I don't make mistakes.” She was not the pinnacle of social adjustment. “When McAlister had his hands around my throat choking the life out of me, I didn’t even have the will to fight back. I just wanted it to all be over.” Maybe she did have a death wish, but she threw herself in harm’s way to protect other people. Exactly the same way he did, for exactly the same reason. The only difference was she didn’t have shields. “You think you are alone... you’re not! You’ve never been alone.” Shae had been there, every day for the last two months. She had watched Peter struggle to find his humanity. He had come so far and Xander still believed that he could be saved. “What if it had been me there, or Caitlyn or Clair? Is that how you would have sparred with us?” He did not need to be shattering ribs to prove a point. |

Shae seemed to believe her existence was the same lack of worth as his own, which made him almost angry at her. "Mark, Amaya, Aiko, Amber, Soen, about 200 little kids..." His hand traced the only scar that didn't blend with the others, the one that right from the bottom of his right ribcage. "Ashley." He turned to her, the look in his eyes telling her he had lost too many things close to him. "Those are all people I could have, should have protected and I failed. Your parents were killed while you were away, you could have done nothing for them. I laid on the floor in shock while my little sister was raped and murdered right in front of me because my parents thought that a 12 year old could babysit and 8 year old and answer the door by himself. I answered the door to 3 men with knives. Mark, my patrol partner, died because I could not protect him in a firefight caused by my own damn refusal to back down from taking out a group of gangs that were paying the police chief for protection." He breathed heavily, catching his breath. "Then I got transferred here, got a fresh start, and failed right at the door. A detective was forcefully exposed to a drug and I happened to be nearby and able to restrain her before she killed her partner. I agreed to lock her up in my apartment until the addiction wore off. I trusted her too soon, let her go off on her own because I believed she was ready. She relapsed, got hooked again, and I never saw her again. Aiko and Amber, two kids in love, went off and got themselves killed when I could have kept them alive but I never bothered to look into their lives after one of them was attacked and nearly killed. Soen, a young deaf girl who I was foolish enough to let help in my cases because she was a genius. She went off patrolling one night without me and was murdered, had the blood sucked right out of her body. Then I started doing black ops work for the chief, hitting human trafficking rings that the police couldn't raid because there was too much red tape. I watched a lot of children die because I arrived an hour or even minutes too late to save them." He raised his left arm, looking over the scars. "I was supposed to die that day. I was supposed to bleed out right there in the street after sacrificing myself to save my friends. I was supposed to die saving lives, instead I've survived to kill more people. I probably won't have another chance to die honorably, I'll either die of old age or die trying to kill people." Her next question just made him shake his head. "You and Caitlyn couldn't fight your way out of a wet paper bag. I overestimated Sephyr, I believed she could handle what I was throwing at her. I was apparently wrong." |

“I know what you have gone through on the force.” Well, most of it. “I saw every report, every image, every psych evaluation, every medical report that every officer in the entire NCPD went through. I was the person who had to file every single case note. I have seen office’s quit due to stress because someone accidentally shot their cruiser while they were in it.” Some people did not have it in them to deal with the stress, guilt, hate... the self loathing and the sense of failure. “Turning it all off, pretending that you are worthless and have no emotions is not a way of dealing with it. If you really think it is, you are no different to McAlister.” “We all have limitations, there are things none of us can do. But all you can see is where you have failed.” Was she so different? Could Shae have seen the lives she saved unless someone pointed it out to her? Maybe she didn’t know the first thing about psychology, but there were a few things she needed him to hear. “You weren’t the one raping and butchering people. You weren’t the one hooked on drugs or blowing buildings up.” If she was wrong in that, then he needed to interrupt her right there. “You save innocent lives from the twisted people in this world.” She was desperate for him to see the good he had done in the world, at least acknowledge that there was another side to the coin of people he had failed if he was not prepared to see it yet. “Being ground zero when the meteorite hit, didn’t make you responsible because you couldn’t stop it!” It was not anger, it was something else entirely which sparked her outburst. “We were always going to lose Peter... we were always going to fail someone, somewhere, somehow. The only question was how much of that could we take before we gave up, stopped caring or turned into the very thing we were fighting against.” |
