Niwa's Recent News
  • 19 April 2015 -- Niwa is under new management!

Niwa is now under new management as we strive to stand up the the standards of fun and entertaining roleplaying we have so far provided here at Niwa. Today makes the start of a campaign to bring in new members as Head Admin Akaiken and Support Admin Sparky work together to improve and uphold the current face of Niwa and keep us all moving forward!

They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home.

Can you survive it?

"Goshinpainaku. The transfer of efficient information is my specialty. My Japanese linguistic databases are at their latest revision."

Sixteen hours of straight flight from London to Niwa. Hours of waiting for her (late) escort to the NCPD offices - more specifically, the building of the special unit she'd been assigned to. It was times like these that Lady felt blessed by her robot "physiology", but simultaneously cursed the complex personality driver she'd been installed with. The anticipation of finally being field-tested had come to a head over several years, and finally, when it came time for her debut, the delays caused her no small amount of frustration.

By the time she reached CRASH Headquarters, the glower on her face was apparent.

But she'd save it, because first impressions were everything. Standing outside the building, she ran a few diagnostics on herself - best that nothing malfunction while she was introducing herself. As a combat android, the results would be disastrous. A second or two of fiddling with her central processing unit and BIOS, and she would be ready.

"Servomotors... 99.8% efficiency. Adjustment required. Caindel... capacitor uncharged. Gyroscopic balance... optimal. Dress? Frilly."

Lady pushed past the doors to the building, swallowing what would have been saliva if she was subject to the human condition. What awaited her there? How would they react to their new "comrade"?

“You are excited?” Vi’s voice echoed from her speakers. Vi’s voice ~ Shae’s voice... it was all the same. It was a wonder the C.R.A.S.H. officers did not think their Lieutenant was insane, she spent most of the day talking to herself after all. Or at least that is what it sounded like.

Shae just smiled down at the camera display from the front door. “Of course I am excited. I have never seen tech like this before.” Hardware at least. If she was being honest with herself, Vi was a full AI with boundless capacity for learning and reprogramming and all the space in the world to do it in. It would be interesting to see how someone else without her particular gifts built and modelled a personality.

Could Shae have reprogrammed Lady? In a heartbeat. There was no software system in the world she could not have rewritten, no exceptions. But that defeated the purpose of free will. The Lieutenant was more interested in who Lady already was. If Lady wanted software upgrades somewhere down the line, then she would get them. But for now she just smiled at the image of the woman who had stepped through the front door.

The elevator took forever, but when it finally reached the lobby Shae was the picture of her professional self. For a member of C.R.A.S.H. the Lieutenant was not what someone would expect. She was petite, young, bubbly... there was nothing about her which screamed authority. Not until a situation went bad. That was the moment the usually shy and awkward officer melted away. But here and now, Shae had no reason at all to feel awkward. To her, Lady was another member of the team ~ not a piece of hardware.

“Welcome to CRASH. I am Lieutenant Forestward, but everyone around here calls me Shae.” She did not extend her hand with the introduction. Women were not big on shaking hands in any culture.

"Greetings, fleshli-- Lieutenant Forestward!"

Lady hadn't calculated that her first encounter with CRASH would be with a woman close to her own height. She'd simulated, at least, that her colleagues would be towering, gruff men with a bone to pick and rugged beards. Of course, that kind of mindset was naive in a city of metahumans. Even her design was finalized by a girl not even her in teens. She quickly disengaged her "naive bias" circuits and went on to curtsey, with all the programmed delicacy of robot nobility. Robility. Lady noted to disengage her portmanteau-creation algorithm as well.

"Allow me to introduce myself, as well. I am Lady Charlotte Argent the First, of the House of Argent - but you may call me 'Lady'."

With a self-satisfied smirk and a flourish of her hand, as if presenting herself, she continued.

"I am a fully combat-capable android, produced by MechaDyne Technologies. You must already know this, but I am here in my prototype stage to both field test my construction, equipment, and AI while simultaneously assisting Niwa's C.R.A.S.H. unit in their duties. These are my two primary directives. SECONDARY DIRECTIVE! Make friends."

Her introduction more-or-less finished, Lady took the time to briefly analyze Shaeris Forestward. A cursory magnification and analysis of her skin-tone gave no hints to as to her heritage. With her "naive bias" circuits enabled, she'd also expected her new colleagues to be primarily Japanese. This suggested otherwise.

"Query! What is the nature of your birth nationality? Are you American? British? Canadian?"

Fleshling... yeah, she was going to go there. All Shae could do was smile. Most of the C.R.A.S.H. force was made up of one warped sense of humour or another. Lady was going to fit right in.

“I have a mixed heritage actually.” Shae chuckled. If it is was not for Vi asking her seemingly random questions all the time that may have caught her flatfooted. “My father was British and my mother Japanese.” Every member of C.R.A.S.H. besides Shae and Lyn were internationals. Lady was going to be asking that question a lot over the next few days. There were more American’s than anything else.

“I was made aware of your directives, however there was no mention to any special accommodation requirements you had.” Lady’s schematics had naturally been lacking specifics, but there had still been enough in there to tweak Shae’s interest. “There is personal accommodation available on the top floors if you would prefer a room to yourself.” She was expecting to see luggage, or equipment. Anything and everything CRASH would have needed to keep Lady operational. “Alternatively, you could appropriate one of the offices located near the mainframe if you prefer.”

Shae was not about to suggest that Lady make herself comfortable in the weapon storage. She would save that one for after a few more fleshling comments.

“I did have come questions about your personality programming but they can wait until you are settled in and have met everyone.” Everyone was a fairly short list so far. Peter’s decision to hand pick his officers based on their meta ability, skills and record was a fairly slow process. Until Lady walked through that door most of the meta humans which made up C.R.A.S.H. were defensive and utility based.

"British, you say? We should get along splendidly, then, meat-- Lieutenant! SECONDARY DIRECTIVE ACHIEVED.

A faint whirring sound accompanied Lady's movements as she skipped excitedly past Shae. Excellent! She'd completed one of her objectives upon arrival. Surely, an auspicious wind blew for her. She turned her differently-colored eyes to the rest of the foyer as Shae spoke. The lobby did little to paint the picture that the unit members actually LIVED in the office building. It was the heart of C.R.A.S.H. in more ways than one, it seemed - housing most of their own equipment and data.

"I would actually prefer a room to myself. I imagine I'll have to furnish it myself?"

No problem. As long as it had internet access. For everything else, MechaDyne would provide to the best of their ability - appeasing their laserbot with superficial material goods was a small price to pay for Lady not going on a plasma-exploding rampage with her eye cannon.

"No further amenities are needed. Under the assumption that this building has running water. In the event of catastrophic damage to my chassis, I will either self-detonate, or require transport to a particular address. I will have to provide you with that address, of course. While we are discussing this, you may ask me any question you want. My agenda is free until I have been relayed commands."

“There is running water, and I can show you to your room now.” Shae offered stepping back towards the elevator. “If you require more space, I will see what can be arranged.” She would have waited for Lady to enter the elevator before pushing the button for the ninth floor. Most of the rooms were already taken on the top floor, the last few which remained still needed to be renovated. “Floors seven, eight, nine and ten are dedicated to officer housing. Though much of the space is still under construction.” It was not so much a tour as a quick rundown on the building set up. “Six is evidence and records, the mainframe is located on the fifth floor and the rest of floors five and four has been converted into work stations. The third floor is the training room, lockers and the showers.” Looking at Lady, Shae hesitated, every officer had been warned about the single working shower, but something told her their newest recruit was not going to be bathing anytime soon.

“The second floor is the kitchen, dining and recreational rooms. Ground and first floor comprise mostly of the front foyer, entrance to the adjoining parking lot, storage and holding cells. Some which are being outfitted to hold meta humans.” That detail was one which had been severely lacking at the main station. Needing to transport dangerous meta humans to Osore for holding was going to be a thing of the past. “In the basement is the shooting range... My personal rooms and the Captains are located on the top floor and to the best of my knowledge we are always on duty, night or day.”

“Vi has eyes and or ears everywhere except the top four levels. If you need any information, she should be able to supply it.” Shae did not elaborate more on the building’s resident A.I. Vi had a habit of making herself know. Even though she was still in the testing phase, she had been able to work through every problem Shae set for the adapting intelligence.

The elevator doors opened and Shae stepped out onto the otherwise empty floor. “The only question I have right now is who is authorized to give you commands?” She had been careful to avoid touching Lady, the last thing she wanted to do was infect her... was that even the right phrase? Outside of that, Lady had her pick of any of the completed rooms.

Though the prospect of several vacant rooms was enticing, Lady's interest.exe self-initialized when Shae described the rest of the building's construction. A mainframe? That was interesting, though she doubted that a new arrival like herself would be allowed to access it of her own volition. Still, it called to mind something else she felt like indulging herself in.

"Is there also network access? This would provide a convenient way for me to propagate data to MechaDyne. Though any kind of secure connection would suffice."

Already she was constructing an elaborate data diorama of the floor layout here, and she would do it elsewhere. A combat-capable android would require this information to construct a battle plan if push came to shove. The same went for any building anywhere. Schematics would be stored locally and all blueprints available in the public domain would be uploaded to her database at a later time.

"I'll take a look around. Thank you, Lieutenant Sausa- Shae. Now to answer your question."

Lady idly chose a place to sit before relaying that information, folding her legs and her hands in her lap neatly.

"Commands relating to the maintenance of my body are strictly relegated to certain MechaDyne engineers and programmers. However, in following with my primary directives, there is a tiered system of command that can be allocated to members of the CRASH unit. All members of CRASH may alter my rules of engagement, but only the captain and his second-in-command, unless otherwise specified, may alter the routines set by my tactical combat module. Likewise, only the two may alter my secondary directives so long as they do not conflict with the primary directive, or with MechaDyne's interests."

Really? Sausage... There must have been a programming error somewhere ~ or Lady was programmed to be a Troll. Shae did not know whether to laugh or wince.

“There is wireless network access on the upper levels, hard wires on the lower. If you require a hard wire for a more direct connection I could try and arrange that.” It would have been easier to designate Lady a room on the seventh floor if she needed to do that. But she was not going to split hairs over the length of a cable. “CRASH operates on a secure server so I will need to program in pathways for a direct connection to MechaDyne without compromising the rest of the system.” Half the time Shae wondered if people understood things when she explained them. There needed to be a more technically correct way of summing it up, but that was the short version of how she needed to adapt the network protocols.

It was good to know she was capable of altering Lady’s directives if need be. But unless it was an emergency, she was going to leave that for the Captain to handle. Speaking of the Captain, Peter should have shown up at any minute to meet Lady personally. No one in the C.R.A.S.H. department was there by accident.

“Do you have any queries so far?”

"Ah, I see. Are you, um... the resident technical expert, perhaps?"

Lady raised a mechanical eyebrow in interest. Shae's concern for the security of the unit's information server suggested a number of things. Of course, Lady was pleased to be around someone who had a modicum of technical knowledge, whether it be related to her mechanical function or her programming.

"I'm quite happy with what I've learned so far, but you must introduce me to your mainframe at some point. I'm absolutely dying to meet them. And... well, who else can I expect to see here? I would like to complete my profile of the CRASH unit as soon as possible."

"Introduce her to the mainframe." She chuckled to herself. More like self-indulgent digging through data just so she'd know better than others. As for meeting the other members, the circumstances in which Lady would be utilized would no doubt be limited. Most missions probably didn't require her expertise. She was a combat android, designed for lethal force. She was useful in other aspects: precision demolition and technical know-how, but she imagined there were others in the unit no doubt with abilities tailored to such purposes as well.

Still, she held out some semblance of hope that she would be able to test her equipment in a prompt manner.

“I am the technical officer here in the building. Vi manages most of the database, if you have any further queries she will be able to assist you.” Personnel files were restricted access, but there was a small part of Shae that was curious about what would happen if Lady came into contact with Vi. “Be aware, Vi is a viral artificial intelligence. I cannot guarantee that she, or I, will not so damage to your existing software programs if you were to come into contact with either of us.” If her primary directive was to protect herself and Mechadyne’s hardware, it was probably for the best that she knew that. “There is no risk in accessing Vi from an external terminal.”

It would also explain why Shae had been maintaining her distance.

“Most of the other officers in the building can be found in the training room, recreation space or in the offices.” There weren’t many, but they were there. Looking at CRASH the whole building seemed to run on a skeleton crew. Handpicked was what the Captain was going for. “Normally I would show you around and introduce you to the others, but I am needed over at the main precinct.” Shae turned, pressing the button on the elevator.

As far as work place inductions went, it was brief. But her own had been even briefer. The Captain was less on formalities and creature comforts than he was on ensuring he had the right people to get the job done. Apparently the right people now included a cybernetic assault platform. “It is good to have you with us, Lady.” Shae genuinely meant that as she stepped into the elevator and pressed the button for the ground floor.
