  • 19 April 2015 -- Niwa is under new management!

Niwa is now under new management as we strive to stand up the the standards of fun and entertaining roleplaying we have so far provided here at Niwa. Today makes the start of a campaign to bring in new members as Head Admin Akaiken and Support Admin Sparky work together to improve and uphold the current face of Niwa and keep us all moving forward!

They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home.

Can you survive it?

Lieutenant Shaeris Forestward... she never would have imagined she would amount to anything. Being an officer of the NCPD had been preordained by the covered up murder of her parents. But she had moved on from the NCPD to the C.R.A.S.H. division. That in itself was nothing short of a miracle, she had never been combat orientated.

Demons were what each and every one of them had, but Shae had stared death in the face and it had laughed at her. More accurately, Brian McAlister had laughed at her. He could have crushed the life out of her, and for a moment she had wanted him to. Welcoming the end he offered. Had she fallen so far? She was not a being who knew anything of self pity, but in that moment she did. Falling that far was the least of her issues. It was the reason so many of her shield brothers and sisters found their own means of escaping. This job, this life had a way of taking the things away from someone they were not prepared to lose.

Occupational hazard.

Could she do a damn thing about it? No. And the sooner she accepted that the sooner she was going to be the person she needed to be. The other side of Peter’s leadership, he had chosen her because he needed her to have authority. Not because she had leadership qualities. Not yet. But the foundation for it was there. She was analytical and usually worked with more information than anyone else had available to them. Decisive, intelligent... the only thing they had never tested was her ability to make the impossible call.

Thankfully that is what she had the Captain for.

“What parameters should be set when cataloguing known crimes within sensor range?” Shae shook off her absent thoughts and returned to the task at hand. She could have programmed everything with little more than a touch, but she was running other programs ~ on two fronts. It would have be strange for anyone to sit there and listen to their own voice... but that was not what Shae sounded like in her own head.

“Filter out single vehicle related offenses that you monitor through the traffic cameras unless it is an accident. If it is an accident set up protocols to notify the main precinct and ambulance or fire authorities.” The traffic cameras were there for a reason and that was so the city could catch everyone who ran red lights or were speeding. Shae did not need to dedicate the C.R.A.S.H. VI to dealing with that.

“Good afternoon Officer Nottingham.” Jon would not have had a chance to step into Shae’s office before the VI acknowledged him, causing Shae to jump slightly in her chair and turn towards the door.

“I had a loving family once, a mother, father... I never got the chance to find out what they wanted me to be.” The fire, the explosion... they were looking at images of her family home. “I was 12 years old when they were both taken from me. I know what it feels like to want to be there. That maybe you could have made a difference.” Looking at the explosion, the only difference Shae could have made was by adding to the death toll.

Rather than looking at the screen, Shae stretched her arms across the desk, leaning right over so she could rest her cheek against her arms. She did not need to see the images, they were all burned into her memory. That was what made the nightmares seem that much more real. “My father was a NCPD detective working a case that involved one of the organised crime families. This was how they stopped the investigation. He knew something was coming because he pulled me out of school and sent me away to stay with my grandparents that week.”

All of the breadcrumbs were there for anyone with the courage to look. But no one had the stomach, or they were too afraid. “The explosion was ruled as an accident and never investigated, every case my father was working on was swept under the rug.” That was the one beautiful thing about having nothing at all in her life. Shae could dig as deep as she wanted and the only person who would suffer for it was herself.

Blackmail was a tool best used on someone with something to lose.

“I was raised by my grandparents who both passed away within 5 years of the accident.” She remembered her last trip to the cemetery, it was not an experience someone would ever forget. It was not that she had a death wish, there was just nothing to live for. Brian McAlister was the only one had looked into her and seen that. Closing her hazel eyes she tried to banish the memory, taking a deep breath before continuing.

“I don’t do this very well. I am awkward and shy, the only thing I have is my badge. It is the only thing I know how to be. I’ve tried this dance before and it did not end well. Either I was not ready or he wasn’t the right guy.” It was not exactly the damaged goods warning, more like a fragile sticker. She didn’t want to frighten Jon away. But she did not want to keep everything secret and have him figure out somewhere down the line that she was not worth it. She looked defeated, like the heart she wore on her sleeve had taken one too many beatings.

Jon listened...

and listened...

His silence was all he could offer her at the moment. That and his undivided attention. There was so much destruction in the world, but when you found the epicenter of it, its destruction multiplies. Jon knew first hand how horribly devastating it was to lose such important parts of ones life, however he could not imagine losing every single one of them. If his mother would have been in that car, he would have lost his mind and probably be just as crazy as McAlister. He was fortunate, in the worst way possible. Shae was strong in her own way, and it was showing as she told him her story.

Everything about what happened to her parents screamed 'NO' accident. Nothing about her being sent away to her grandparents, then this happening should remotely look like a random fire. Jon hated investigations like this; assuming was something no cop should ever do. That and profiling.

Jon noticed that she had closed her eyes, and took this opportunity to get up out of his seat. He wouldn't make a sound as he moved towards her, and by god if Vi said anything he would purposefully download any form of virus he could onto his computer. While she continued to talk, he moved around her desk. The defeated look on her face all but broke his heart. Whatever relationships, whatever hard times she had before, Jon wasn't going to scare away from them. She and him had a lot more in common then maybe she saw. Just because he was strong physically, didn't mean he was always strong emotionally. Everyone had baggage, even Jon did. Sometimes... they just needed someone to carry that baggage for a while, and let them rest for a while.

Jon was willing to carry whatever luggage Shae had to drop on him.

He moved to her side, and instead of pulling her up out of her chair, Jon moved to his knees in front of her. He'd turn her chair, and if she hadn't opened her eyes already, that would have caught her attention. There were no words for him to say that would make the world better. It wouldn't erase whatever bad relationship she had before. It wouldn't get rid of her awkwardness or shyness (not like he would want that anyways). And it sure wouldn't bring back her family. However, he could offer her his comfort. That and his strength. He would always, even if she would never call him anything above a friend, be a friend to her.

Only a second passed by as he turned her towards him, before he leaned in and wrapped his arms around her neck and pulled her into him. Even on his knees, he was at perfect height to take Shae into his arms. "You're perfect the way you are. I would never ask anything different from who you are. Your awkwardness and shyness are what you are." His words were soft, a whisper in her ear. "I can't erase what happened, the loss of your family and the pain you suffered will always be there. However," He pulled back slightly to look into her eyes, his own crimson ones melting into hers. "I can offer you strength to lean on."

One of his hands moved up and brushed the hair behind her ear, his hand trailing her jawline and resting against her cheek. "And whoever that guy was, he was a fool for letting you go." His smile returned.

He hoped Vi wouldn't butt in on this moment...

Virus. Remember viruses Vi.

Jon had hugged her. Shae did not hear him moving, only the surprise which tensed her body on the other side of his arms. Did she mind? Officer Nottingham may have gotten to jump on her ~ but it was completely her choice to slip her arms around his chest and hug him every bit as fiercely. She needed a friend, more than anything else she could have wanted to share with Jon. It was hard to admit that she was afraid to take that leap again. Not because he wasn’t the right guy, but because she didn’t think she was the right girl.

She just leaned into the hand he held against her cheek, closing her eyes for a heartbeat and melting on the inside. There needed to be some law against men like Jon. When she reopened her eyes, her gaze caressed over his features. Even in the lighting from her monitor display he was perfect, his crimson eyes, his teal hair... her eyes lingered on his lips for a moment, that sweet smile and she started wondering what his lips would feel like against her own.

Awesome Shae... way to make it awkward in your own head! There was almost no mistaking what thought had crossed her mind, not from that distance. She was throwing him the friend card, but it sure was not from lack of attraction. He could have seen her cheeks turn slightly red, feel the warmth of embarrassment radiating off them as she tried to hide her features. Not that she really had anywhere to go but to look down.

“It wasn’t his fault.” Was there ever really anyone to blame for it not working out? Whatever had happened, Shae did not put it all onto Jacob. She was equally as responsible. “I just didn’t want you thinking that I was something or someone that I wasn’t.” She nodded back to the images on the screen even if she did not want to look. “I know that we all have baggage, it is a prerequisite for doing what we do and being who we are. I just don’t want this to be too much.”

Was it too much? Somehow she didn’t think it was going to scare Jon away. Shae didn’t want pity, not for this. People had been telling her how sorry they were, but they were not the ones who lived with it. So what if she was awkward and shy... she could have grown up in a loving family and been completely normal and still ended up just as introverted. It was not a bad thing, it did not mean she was broken. It did however mean she was completely hopeless at talking to people about anything personal. And Jon... sinking into those crimson eyes... yeah, she was never going to be able to talk to him without being at least a little weird.

Jon was not the master at noticing certain things from afar, but up this close it wasn't difficult to see her stare. The color of her cheeks changing and burning bright with a rose color. He just smiled at her, wanting her to feel that he was there for her and that he always would be. Shae could continue to toss Jon into the friendship bus, but until she told him to stop, he never would. And she hadn't told him to, at least not yet. Until then, she may want to start spell it out because this officer wasn't the quitting type. not when it came to something as precious as she was.

Until she either told him to stop completely or she stopped throwing the friend card around, Jon wouldn't overstep his boundaries. He didn't want to ruin what he had already built with her. Trust and friendship. He'd stay at arms length, at least until she wanted him to pull closer and never let her go. It was all on her now, Jon had obviously shown where he was. Yet he wouldn't pressure her. He was a patient man and would wait as long as she needed. That or until she found someone better for her.

When she spoke, he listened. He wasn't exactly saying it was all his fault, but let's be honest here; Shae is the kind of girl one fights for. His comment was that of, the man was a fool for not fighting for her. He wasn't the one for her, obviously, and in a way Jon was thankful for that. It would give him a chance to show her what a real man was. First step was dinner.

"Trust me,"
Jon chuckled and moved his opposite had up and rested it against her shoulder. The hand that caressed her cheek moved down and rested against her hand. His thumb brushing her skin softly, "Nothing is too much for me." There was probably a limit there somewhere, however it wasn't exactly easy to find or get to. "Especially not when it comes to carrying around the baggage of someone that I care about." He would lean up and press his lips against her forehead softly, letting them linger for a second before standing up.

The first time he had kissed her on the top of her head it had felt like being thrown under the friend bus rather than into it. But this time, it was different... she was different. She did trust him, beyond the bonds of the badge they shared.

“How is next Friday night?” Shae just looked up into Jon’s eyes as he stood, god he was tall......... why did she have to be so short? “... for dinner?” She had promised to show him the city, and they could start with the inside of a restaurant. But in the months since he had arrived in Niwa and joined C.R.A.S.H. he had probably seen as much of the city as she had. Thankfully there were still a few little gems hiding in the layers of Niwa’s bedrock that only a local would know. “There is a small Italian restaurant at the end of the Boardwalk on the Waterfront.”

Only Shae would suggest going out for Italian in the middle of a Japanese city.

It was her mixed heritage showing. But she knew the owner... plus the Boardwalk was the best place to go for dinner anywhere in the City. That was one fact about the city everyone needed to know, especially if they had a reason for wanting a romantic night out on the town. Not that they were having a romantic night out Shae reminded herself. She had said no to that detail.

Had she made a mistake saying no? The knot in her stomach would suggest she had made a mistake. She was a firm believer that everyone had one chance at happiness and she had just waved to hers at it passed her by. That was the moment her mind returned to the cemetery and to the promise Brit had made to her. The last thing she wanted was to pull Jon into that mess. Right now the psychopath had no reason to hunt her down. There was no more life in her now than there had been that day against the tree, but if he wanted to threaten the people around her he was going to get the fight he wanted.

She had not said anything about the encounter, not to Jon or Peter... not even to Xander. Shae had not wanted either of them to worry about her, or worse put her under constant guard. McAlister was a fairly unique looking individual and had no record with firearm. Any of them would be able to see him coming...

Pushing the memory away, Shae wore the most self conscious smile on her face waiting for Jon to tell her that he was allergic to pasta or something equally as horrible.

He may as well have jumped for joy with that smile across his face. Jon understood she didn't want it to be romantic, but that didn't mean he wouldn't slip in some of the elements of it. He hoped to make it a night that she would want to repeat. There was no question that he wanted her to be happy, and he'd make sure to make her feel that way anyway he could.

"I'll make reservations, and I'll pick you up at 8." What was funny, and Shae would see the smirk on his face for it, was that they lived right across the hall from one another. So if he was late then there would be a problem. She was someone that he'd be on top for, always.

Jon brushed his hand against her cheek once more, the smile on his face never leaving. "Thank you." He wanted to stay there with her all day, talk and have Vi interrupt at odd times. Laugh and tell stories to one another. However he knew that she had work to do, and so did he. They'd see one another soon, and he was so thankful for that. Having Shae avoid him was more painful then she could imagined. He had felt so far from her, but yet they were so close the entire time.

Crazy...

"I'll let you get back to work." He finally said, forcing himself to pull away from her and walk around her desk. "I'll see you tonight." Jon turned his head back and gave her a nod. "See you later, Shae. Bye Vi." His hand rested at the door as he pushed it open and rounded it, slowly closing it behind him.
