Niwa's Recent News
  • 19 April 2015 -- Niwa is under new management!

Niwa is now under new management as we strive to stand up the the standards of fun and entertaining roleplaying we have so far provided here at Niwa. Today makes the start of a campaign to bring in new members as Head Admin Akaiken and Support Admin Sparky work together to improve and uphold the current face of Niwa and keep us all moving forward!

They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home.

Can you survive it?

Lieutenant Shaeris Forestward... she never would have imagined she would amount to anything. Being an officer of the NCPD had been preordained by the covered up murder of her parents. But she had moved on from the NCPD to the C.R.A.S.H. division. That in itself was nothing short of a miracle, she had never been combat orientated.

Demons were what each and every one of them had, but Shae had stared death in the face and it had laughed at her. More accurately, Brian McAlister had laughed at her. He could have crushed the life out of her, and for a moment she had wanted him to. Welcoming the end he offered. Had she fallen so far? She was not a being who knew anything of self pity, but in that moment she did. Falling that far was the least of her issues. It was the reason so many of her shield brothers and sisters found their own means of escaping. This job, this life had a way of taking the things away from someone they were not prepared to lose.

Occupational hazard.

Could she do a damn thing about it? No. And the sooner she accepted that the sooner she was going to be the person she needed to be. The other side of Peter’s leadership, he had chosen her because he needed her to have authority. Not because she had leadership qualities. Not yet. But the foundation for it was there. She was analytical and usually worked with more information than anyone else had available to them. Decisive, intelligent... the only thing they had never tested was her ability to make the impossible call.

Thankfully that is what she had the Captain for.

“What parameters should be set when cataloguing known crimes within sensor range?” Shae shook off her absent thoughts and returned to the task at hand. She could have programmed everything with little more than a touch, but she was running other programs ~ on two fronts. It would have be strange for anyone to sit there and listen to their own voice... but that was not what Shae sounded like in her own head.

“Filter out single vehicle related offenses that you monitor through the traffic cameras unless it is an accident. If it is an accident set up protocols to notify the main precinct and ambulance or fire authorities.” The traffic cameras were there for a reason and that was so the city could catch everyone who ran red lights or were speeding. Shae did not need to dedicate the C.R.A.S.H. VI to dealing with that.

“Good afternoon Officer Nottingham.” Jon would not have had a chance to step into Shae’s office before the VI acknowledged him, causing Shae to jump slightly in her chair and turn towards the door.

"I just... don't know what to do."
"Go to her, Jon. You obviously care for her, why torture yourself?"
"She's avoided me every chance I try to see her though."
"Are you a quitter?"
"Absolutely not. Especially not when it comes to her."
"Well then you do know what to do."
"But it's obvious she doesn't want to see me."
"She went through so much, son. Remember when you lost your father and sisters? You shut everyone out. Including me."

"Yeah, and I regret it still."
"Just force your presence on her. She probably needs you just as much as you need her."
"Alright, thanks mom. Love you."
"Love you too son. Call me and tell me how it goes."

Jon had spoken to his mother earlier that afternoon, and her words still hung over his shoulder like an angel guiding his path. He loved his mom more then anything, she had been his rock when things were so bad. If not for her, he would've broken down when he lost his sisters and father in their accident. He knew what loss felt like, and she was right he had shut everyone out. So he could understand why Shae had pushed him away, even if he honestly didn't want her to.

The officer, wearing his uniform, rounded the corner heading towards Shae's office. He was cleaned up nicely, ready to start his shift in an hour or so. He wanted to get out early so that he had time to talk to Shae. Even if he was a bit nervous, he didn't show it. The last time he had seen her was at the hospital, and even if they lived right across from one another he hadn't seen her in weeks. It really did break his heart. Shae had been the first officer he met when he transferred to the NCPD, the first person he had made a connection to here in Niwa.

He was trying to be as sneaky as possible, she had been using the camera's to sneak by him throughout the week, but this time he would get the drop on her. That was, until the AI in front of her office door screamed out his name. "That's nice, VI. Can't sneak anywhere here without you ruining it." His playful tone echoed threw the smile on his face. He wasn't mad, on the contrary he thought it was funny. If VI would have ruined him seeing Shae though, that would have been a different story. She'd find herself in pieces across the floor. At least, that speaker would have.

Jon knocked, only to be funny because she had already known he was there by the look on her face. He gave her a bright, toothy smile. "Hey, got a minute?" He really hoped that she wouldn't send him away. His expression pleaded that she let him stay.

“Vi, shut down. We can continue with this later.” It was a strange kind of request and reassurance rather than a direct order. For Shae, Vi was every bit as complex as any of the other officers so she afforded the program the same respect.

“Acknowledged.” The sound was audible as the seven foot mainframe housing across from Shae began to power down to standby mode. Leaving the program fully functional was really not the best idea until the tech had finished writing the protocols. No one would have realised it, but the program was more like a child. Her processes shifted and moved as fast as what Shae’s did. Vi was fully adapting, all Shae did was set boundaries like a parent would. Not stop the program from exploring on its own.

Almost reluctantly Shae removed her hand from the mouse. For what it was worth anymore. Vi was fully voice activated and she was hardwired into every intercom in the building. The physical connection just gave her access to Vi’s root programming. All it took to bring her out of standby was for someone to say her name. That may have needed some tweaking... and it would help if the other officers knew her name. When she looked up at Jon, Shae couldn’t help the smile that tugged at her lips.

Vi could have warned her that he was there. The tech had asked her to... and in a strange roundabout way that is what the program had done. Just not as she had intended. Then again, Vi was a mirror of Shae’s own personality, a complete replica rather than an independent entity. If Shae subconsciously wanted to talk to Jon, the program would have made sure it happened.

She was his superior officer though, as awkward as that whole notion seemed. He could have just wanted to check something with her in that capacity. But honestly, avoiding him had not been the most mature reaction on her behalf... but she was the reason he had been shot. It was hard to face him when she felt so responsible.

“I have all afternoon.” That didn’t sound right. “I mean, I’m free... if it was going to take more than a minute. Which you probably used as more of a saying than an actual measurement of time...” There it was, the sweet awkward girl. Why couldn’t she just say ‘sure, what’s up?’ Lyn always had a handle on these things... but it was Jon and, well... he would smile at her and she’d start feeling all giddy. Like every other female officer in the building did.

Then she remembered that he had friend zoned her two seconds after they first met which just made that giddy feeling seem completely ridicules. She took a deep breath, squaring her shoulders and trying to look the part of his Lieutenant. “How can I help?”

That actually came out of her mouth like it sounded in her head... first time for everything!

Jon chuckled softly, his head tilting downward. She was so adorable, something that reminded him just why he cared for her so much. It's why it hurt so bad when she pushed him away like she did, but he couldn't fault her for it. Just as his mother forgave him, Jon would always forgive Shae. There was always a reason behind every action, and for that he understood her. She would most likely tell him why she had avoided him, so he wouldn't start off with that question.

He had forgotten she was higher ranking then him, but it was only when she spoke did he remember. Jon would need to tip toe lightly with what he was going to say, the last thing he wanted to do was overstep his boundaries.

"Afternoon, Shae." He started, moving into her office, he took the seat directly in front of where she sat and got comfortable. It seemed as though he had something to talk about, just by the way he composed himself. His eyes wondering before making contact with Shae's, his hands rested in his lap and his leg crossed over seemed more then formal for him. There was a problem, he hadn't come in with something specific to say. "So I have this problem, but first I need to tell you a story."

Jon was about to talk the most he had, to anyone, in a long time. However, he needed to tell her. It would be the only way for her to understand just how he felt.

"I grew up with a loving family, a mother, father and two sisters. We had a different life style, but all in all we were happy. My mother wanted me to be a stay at home father--one day--whereas my dad always pushed me to do what he never did." Jon adjusted himself in his seat, and took another deep breath. "Which I did. Instead of following in my fathers footsteps, I went off and joined the police academy and became an officer of the law. My mother wasn't so pleased, but she soon got over it. Years later," He gave her a smile, "My father and sisters were in a head on collision that killed them instantly. If I would have been there, I believed I could saved them."

Jon didn't look upset, even though it was a very touchy subject for him, he continued without faltering. "I blocked everyone out of my life, and focused on working. My mother tired to get in contact with me, even flew to Hong Kong to find me. But I ignored her. I blamed myself for what had happened, and I took that out on everyone around me. If I wouldn't have tried to go my own way, I would have been there for them." The story he spoke had never been told to anyone else before. The only two that knew the story were his mother and him. "It took my mother showing up at my doorstep in the middle of the night when I couldn't run from her, to get to me. She told me that strength isn't always in being physically strong. That the strongest people can take the bad things in life, and use it to make them stronger."

He leaned forward and stretched his arm across her desk and rested it against hers. His smile never wavering. Jon hadn't had the best life, but he definitely didn't have the worst. He knew that every life came with its up and downs, and Shae was just having that down moment. It was time for her to stand up and start moving upward on the elevator of life. Jon would be there for her, whether it was to carry her or stand by her side. He would be that cane for her to lean on.

"Now, for my problem."
Jon immediately flipped the switch and leaned back against his chair, his hands resting on the armrests of the chair. "I have this friend, I care about her so much but she's been avoiding me." He was being funny, but it was for a good reason. All he wanted to do was see her smile now. For her to laugh with him, and for them to go back to how they use to be. Maybe even more then before... "Now, I've tried to see her the last couple weeks. However, she is just so darn sneaky. Vi helps her out too, I just know it." His smile getting wider.

"My problem is, Shae, is I want to take her out to dinner but can't get the time to ask her... What should I do?"

Shae sat still in her seat as she listened to Jon speak. When she pulled his file the first day he arrived she had seen something about a car accident. But as he started putting the pieces she fought the constriction of her chest. Survivors guilt... that is what her psychologist had called it. She had lived with it for so long that she could not have imagined her life without it. How she as a person would have been different. Nothing he said was about her, but it felt like the story of her life... only she had never had anyone to pull her back. In so many ways she was still lost.

There were no words, not that he asked for any. She would not have been able to give them anyway.

Swallowing was harder than she thought it could be, the sudden dryness in her mouth. She was not strong though, she had never been strong. Courage is different to strength. Touching her arm was how he pulled her back. She had smiled weakly, even then when he reached out to her she wanted to be able to comfort him. Shae did not believe that people could be fixed, once they were broken that was it... from that moment on it was learning to build the pieces back together again. Jon had managed to do that and build something which was going to be harder to break again.

Shae was still scrambling to find the pieces.

When he sat back and everything in his demeanour changed, Shae could not help but smile a little. It was one of those heart warming smiles which came from somewhere deep inside and there was nothing she could have done to try and hide it.

At the mention of her name, Vi’s main processor switched back on. Yeah, Shae needed to fix that. “You are accurate in your assumption, Officer Nottingham.” ...!! Shae just died on the inside........

Through her complete embarrassment, it honestly took until the last word left his lips that she realised what he was asking. Umm.... dinner, as in a date?! That smiling mask she had desperately clung to instantly transformed into a confused frown, every random emotion playing along her features with no filter at all as she watched him. Smooth Shae... really smooth. Yes, she really was that hopeless. Friends went out to dinner as well. Oh god... she really needed to get a handle on her over active imagination.

“Maybe you could devise an elaborate plan to corner her into saying yes...” Shae offered, her cheeks burning bright red. “Or you could try asking her.” Suddenly she was not sure he was speaking about her anymore. It felt like one of those embarrassing moments in a movie where the best friend got the complete wrong idea... When had she become that girl? Was it too much to ask for the ground to just open her up and swallow her whole.

"Yeah, I knew you were involved somehow Vi." Was he seriously talking to a computer now?

Jon was glad that Shae was playing along, either that, or she was seriously that clueless. Whatever the case was, Jon found it absolutely adorable. The way she smiled awkwardly, the confused look on her face, and that innocent act that she played so well. It all came down to just how unique she was. Shae had found a place in his heart, and he wasn't going to let her go. At least, he wasn't going to allow her to run away and hide. Not anymore. It was time he went for what he wanted, and stopped wanting it to come to him.

As she answered his question, he could see the conflicted expression on her face. Had he been talking about her? Was she thinking it was her but feared that it wasn't? He tried to play it cool, act as if he were talking about someone else. Though, he'd be lying to himself if he didn't confess that it was Shae he desired to take out on a date.

Clearing his throat, he continued with his little play. "Hmm... You're right. I should just go for it, make her to say yes. Don't take no for an answer. Right?" Jon barely gave her time to answer him as he stood up quickly from his chair. "Right!" There was determination in his voice, the look on his face as if he were about to go run a marathon. Jon was about to become the luckiest guy in the world...

However it would catch her off guard when he turned around and walked out of her office without saying another word. The only thing that was left was silence, and the questions that were probably floating around her office. Jon had completely left the room without explaining, well, anything. Though, she wouldn't be sitting there in confusion for very long, as she'd hear a *knock knock knock*.

His head would pop out from around the corner, "Hey, can I ask you something Shae?" There was innocence in his eyes as he looked at her. "Actually, no. No no." He shook his head and came back into the room. "Someone told me to just got for it." He walked back over to her desk, but instead of going back to the chair were he originally sat, he came around her desk and took hold of her hand gently. He'd give her a very light tug to take her out of her seat. There was a glimmer of nervousness in his eyes, but he obviously ignored it as he seemed confident in the way he spoke and moved.

"Shae, will you go out to dinner with me? As in, a date-date." His crimson eyes meeting hers. His hand still holding onto hers while his thumb caressed the top of her it.

It was like watching the bloopers reel of her life in slow motion... Shae was completely speechless as Jon went through the motions of torturing her completely. It was like seeing a train wreck... she was powerless to help, and it was so horrifying to watch, but she could not look away. When Jon got up to leave there would have been a solid thump of Shae’s head hitting the desk with enough force to make her groan. Hopefully kick starting her brain again.

Which was right when he knocked on her doorway for a second time....

Please, doctor... turn the life support off. There is nothing more we can do for her...

Jon would have seen Shae sit bolt upright again and the telltale red mark where her forehead had landed on the desk started forming. He was asking her out... her. She actually tried to speak, but what came out was more like the dying throws of some injured animal. It was all vowel sounds.

“...Dinner..?” She asked, around her pained smile. “Rather than a date-date?” There was a hope in her voice that he would still want to take her out somewhere ~ just not romantically, she failed at the romantically. The wreckage which had been her and Jacob’s relationship was evidence of that. “There are a few things I would like to tell you about me too.” Just not right then and there... she was feeling too awkward and her head was starting to throb for some unknown reason. It was a blessing that Vi stayed silent. It would be just like the program to find some other way to torture her.

At least it wasn't a no. There was always steps to take, and if it meant taking baby steps with Shae, Jon was more then happy to do it. The last thing he wanted to do was rush her into something she didn't want. If she wanted to be his friend, then he'd be by her side as one. Even if he hoped that it someday would go behind just dinner, and maybe dinner and a movie. Until then, he'd understand her want to just go as friends. However, until she told him to stop he would never stop trying. Whether she liked it or not, Jon was not a quitter.

Especially when it came to something he wanted.. no, needed.

"I'll take that, for now." He smiled at her, his hand releasing hers so she could sit back down. His warm smile never faltering. She would not get the slightest notion that he was upset by her answer. On the contrary, he seemed overly ecstatic.

Jon then got the sudden sensation that something was up. Maybe it was the red mark on her forehead, or the seriousness of her statement. However until she gave off that she was in trouble, he wouldn't pester her about it. She wanted to tell him about herself, and he was more then happy to listen.

As much as he wanted to stand there next to her, he didn't want to impede on her space. So he rounded the desk and took a seat back where he had been originally. "Please, tell me anything you'd like to share."

Or then and there worked... Shae tried to swallow around the lump in her throat. When Jon sat down again across from her it took a moment before she moved. Rather than stepping around him, she leaned directly across in front of him and reached for the light switch. Which would have been perfectly fine if she had not been so self conscious about bumping into him that she over balanced and ended up in his lap. But not before killing the lights. In all fairness she had been close to Jon before. He had picked her up as though she weighed nothing from the noodle shop that had been riddled with bullets. But now she was throwing herself at him?! The speed she managed to untangle herself from that situation and hurl her petite form back into her own chair was bordering on superhuman.

From bad to worse... bad to worse.

Just breathe!
Thankfully the tech room was centrally located and had no external windows or lighting of any kind. Only the light from the multi screen display would have given away the almost glowing shade of red Shae turned. He was so handsome... and that voice. His smile! She needed to get a grip on herself. Instead of reaching for the mouse on her desk ~ because let’s be honest, reaching for things was a terrible idea for her right now ~ Shae spoke softly.

“Vi, bring up personnel files on Lieutenant Forestward.” It is what she had done to Jon the day he arrived, but what had been a fairly empty file for Officer Nottingham was a novel on Shae. Multiple files, images, case numbers, recommendations, commendations all populated on the screen. Among the images was a very cute picture of Shae in full dress uniform the day she had graduated from the academy top of her class. That perfect self conscious smile she had, it was a mirror of the look on her face now.

“This is what I wanted to show you.” Shae looked to the computer screen, the entire record of everything she had done with the NCPD slide showing across one of the screens. The personnel file held a subroutine to access every case file and report Shae had ever been involved with. Ever single case she had ever worked. For the first time she saw what Peter must have when he promoted her. Everything on the system Shae knew about someone or she could instantly access. But no one else ever saw it complete like this, not even the Captain.

“Vi ... access the restricted files.” The sentence seemed to stick in Shae’s throat but Vi brought up a second set of files on the remaining two screens which were closest to Jon. “Display images from case number 20011113:293A879.” There was a pause, as though what Shae had requested was going to take the program a while to retrieve... but Vi was one of the fastest systems in the world. It was closer to human hesitation before multiple images of what had been a burning home splashed along the screens. Even still ablaze the image of the house was almost unrecognisable, it looked more like an explosion rather than a fire.

Watching her come across the table at him, he gave her a smile. He didn't now what to assume she was doing, but when she reached across him he shifted his eyes towards were she was stretching and noticed he light switch. Jon could have went many routes but decided on the no hands one. He could have, and would have, put his hands onto her stomach and held her up so she wouldn't have slipped, yet he felt that would have made her feel even more uncomfortable. So he refrained from that.

However he second guessed his choice, wondering if he would have held her up she wouldn't have fallen into his lap. Let's be honest though, did he really mind? Jon wasn't the squishiest guy, so the landing wouldn't have been soft. Yet it would have been followed by his hands brushing against the sides of her arm. It was only for a moment though, and he had a reason for doing it. He was going to help lift her up to a standing position, but her unnatural speed substituted for his lack of much motion.

Jon would never admit it, but he loved the smell of her hair and whatever sort of body wash she used. Every time he'd pass her room he'd smell it, and it would instantly give him a picture of her in his head. He would sound like a creep if he said that out loud. The last thing he wanted was to push her away even more. He obviously wasn't doing something right, so he'd need to make sure not to do anything stupid.

It was then that she got down to business. There was something she wanted to tell him, but instead she would show him. And what was to show up on the screen not only stopped any previous thought but it also deterred his smile that had been across his face the entire time. Everything that was on the screen, it was the definition of devastation. The house was not in flames, but had been the victim of an explosion. He could only guess who the victims were, and seeing as Shae never had mentioned a family, he was probably right.

It only took him a minute to scan over the images, but he didn't know what to say to her. The images showed a horrific scene, but they only told half the story. In a way, Jon wished he would have kept her in his lap for this. Not because he was afraid, but because of what she was going to tell him about what she was showing him.

He said nothing, but waited for an explanation as to what he was seeing.
