| They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home. Can you survive it? Scarlett barely climbed out of the taxi cab without clinching her jaw and hissing through her teeth. The hospitals didn't have healers on standby, which she didn't understand why. However there wasn't anything she could do about it, the last thing she was going to do was stay the night in a hospital. She had been there for about five hours and all they could do was secure the bone so that it would begin to heal on its own. She would have to go back tomorrow so that they could finish up with the surgery. However she demanded to go home, even if they didn't want to let her there was no stopping the pyromancer from lighting her way out of there. Through the lobby she went, and as she passed the man that worked at the front desk he rushed from around and moved to the elevator. "Are you alright?" The sling that held her arm up told the story. The bloody clothes she had on were torn, but there wasn't blood coming from anywhere--at least not anymore. The man had a fearful expression on his face, yet he wanted to help anyway that he could. Even if that was just summoning the elevator. "Yes, just press the button." Her tone wasn't rude, just very straight forward. She wanted nothing more then to take off her clothes and get cleaned up. He obliged and called the elevator down for her. His eyes followed her until she stepped into the elevator and the doors closed behind her. Scarlett would have to thank him for his concern another day. The ride up made her sick, even if she couldn't feel it moving at all. That was the last time she would train with someone before the fight against the Empress. She obviously couldn't pay attention long enough to finish a fight, and would end up killing herself before they got to the battle zone. What was funny was, she didn't think of how Wraith would react to this. She had all but forgotten he was probably worried sick about where she was and why she was coming home this late. Normally she'd show up between eleven and twelve each night, shower then go to bed. If work held her longer, it wasn't until three in the morning. How would she explain what happened? She wondered if he would take that it was an accident, and forgive and forget. For some reason, she didn't see that happening one bit. Once the elevator door opened and she made it to her apartment door she unlocked it and very quietly slipped in. Her grace wasn't so fluent as her elbow bumped into the door and she yelped out in pain. "Son of a--" Biting her tongue she leaned against the wall and slammed the door shut. So much for trying to be quiet. There was no grace in her at the moment, a different side to Scarlett that hadn't been seen before. "Wraith?" Scarlett called out through the darkened apartment. It was that moment it hit her, how was she going to tell him. She hoped that he wouldn't go after Arthur for this. It was her fault after all... "Sorry I'm so-- mmm-- late.." She tried to hide the pain behind her words, but he knew how to read her better then she knew how to read herself. It was both loving and kind of scary. |

The only light in the penthouse was the flickering of flames in the centre of the lounge. A small token to let Scarlett know he was there, even if she had not been. How many nights had he waited for her to return to him? It had only been a handful, but each one was like a hook turning in his insides. He did not know where she was, not like he knew where his master was. There was no way the shade could have known if she had been working late or is the Empress had changed her mind. After all he had done to force her hand ~ or lack there of. But this was the first time she had come home to him injured. The moment she opened the door he could smell the blood on her clothing, from the shadows watched how she moved. He saw every inch of pain she tried to hide, he heard it in her voice. She was so brave, and at the same time, so stubborn. The shadow would have flickered across her, darkening in the light of the fire. Scarlett would have felt the dark caress of the shade against her cheek and heard the whisper of his voice long before he became solid. “What have you done?” It could have been cruel, the single question could have demanded answers whether she wished to part with them or not. But it was concern, compassion and the deepest echo of love which begged to know she was alright. Had she done this to her? Had the Empress finally given into her madness completely? When he did materialise, he was standing directly before her, his hand cupping against the side of her face as his thumb caressed along her cheekbone. In the dancing light she would have been able to make out his features, his dark eyes searching hers. Not for answers, but for the understanding of how much pain she was in. No matter how much he wanted to pull her into his arms, he would have injured her further. Why did the monsters continue to follow her, hungry to tear at her flesh... could he have blamed them? Was Wraith not as much a monster who shared her bed. Scarlett courted death, she invited it... he had realised that when she had seen the illusionist. Wraith ached with the knowledge he could not protect her. Despite how much he wanted to, how much he longed to. He wanted to wash away her pain, but he only knew how to inflict it. |

This was why she had wanted to come home. Sure, a nice warm bed and shower was nice. It beat the hospitals cubical shower and twin size bed any day of the week. Even the thought of her own food would draw her away from the hospital. However, that was not the reason she desired her place of rest. Wraith's touch was all she wanted, all she needed to draw her attention away from the pain that shot down her body. Even if it didn't fully take the pain away, it was beginning to fade away as she felt him come to her. His words though, they were demanding. How could she blame him? If he had walked into her home with anything but a small scratch on his finger she would demand to know who did it and where she could find them. The worst part about this was, she couldn't lie to him. Yet she couldn't tell him the entire truth either. That was the most painful part of the situation at hand. How was she to explain that she was testing someone for their role in taking down the Empress? She feared for giving him a name, but she knew he'd find out one way or another. Whether it be from her lips or the lips of another. "It was my fault." She had to start somewhere, right? "This guy, Arthur, and I were training. I lost concentration and he fell into the moment and..." Scarlett moved her hand up and over her shoulder, biting softly at the corner of her lip she shook her head. "Plunged his seven foot sword through my collar bone, all the way to the hilt." Now that she said it out loud, it sounded painful--just as much as it was. It's like being shot from the front, then the bullet taking a back step and coming back through the same place. It wasn't a pleasant feeling. One she'd probably never forget. Her hand moved from her shoulder up to his hand that caressed her cheek. She bare her teeth as she leaned forward and put her forehead against his chin. She had fucked up big time. Even if she had it healed, her movement was going to be limited for at least a few weeks, and the fight against the Empress was coming down to the days. If she wasn't at her best when they went to fight her, then god only knows how useless she'd be. Useless... for once in her life that's how she felt. Scarlett wanted to stay positive, at least in the eyes of Wraith. "But it could've been worse. If it would have been off to the right it would have probably...--" Alright maybe that wasn't being positive. Maybe it was the after effects of the medication, making her stupid or something. Why would she have said something like that? Even if it were true, just off to the right a bit more and it would have been her throat that was stabbed. Unfortunately, she wouldn't have been there to take Wraith's wrath. |

There was no outward sign, nothing to give any of his emotions away and in the flickering light she could not have seen them clearly... but that was a name he intended on remembering. Arthur. Training or not... accidents were no accidents in the shade’s world. “I would have trained with you.” Even his words were gentle, not a hint of the agony he intended on inflicting on this other man seeped through. He had been following the Triads for long enough now to know of who she spoke. None of that changed the fact he would have trained with her... he was faster, stronger, more agile than Scarlett was ~ he had been made that way. He was proficient in a hundred different techniques, some of which were long forgotten to this world. Above all, he would never have lost himself to the moment. Not even in the heat of battle would he have forgotten her for the woman he loved. But she had not asked him... or spoken to him of much lately. He would have waited an eternity for her to open up to him. When she had leaned into him, there was nothing more he could do but hold her. Careful to avoid her injury. He knew what would have happened if the injury she sustained had been slightly off. With the certainty of a surgeon he knew what would have happened. She could not continue cauterizing her own wounds. All that did was stop the bleeding and starve off infection. It did not mean she would heal any faster, or that it would cause less pain. There was only so much she could take, even the bullets which had slammed into her at Dusk were still not completely healed. Was that why she had asked another to train with her? Because Wraith would have insisted she needed more time to recover. But if it had been the choice between him and the barbarian. With all things, the shade would have moved heaven and earth for Scarlett. Unlike her, he had time to shower and change into the clothing she bought him. Only the slight dampness in his hair suggested what he had done with the time he waited. As content as he would have been to hold her and know that she was alright he drew her towards the couch. Whatever blood was still on her was long dry and he could not have cared less about the fabric. What he did know, was that she would not have been able to lay down with that shoulder. Even with painkillers. “Tell me what you need.” Anything to have made her more comfortable. |

Scarlett smiled at him, "I know you would have.." How hard it as for her to not tell him the full reason was harder than anyone could ever imagine. She wanted nothing more then to open up about everything that was going on, and tell him about every second of her day. Yet she couldn't. Not only for the safety of herself anymore, but for those whom she had already recruited. Everything that was going on, it all broke down to the war. Scarlett desired no one else to train with; Wraith would be her teacher and student every day. She wanted no one else to love; He'd be that soul mate for life. There was nothing else she wanted other then him, and as much as she wanted it to be that way it couldn't right now. When he took her off to the couch she followed, making sure to keep her arm at a safe distance from anything that she may bump into. All she wanted was to be by his side right now. He demanded to know what she needed, and that was it. He was there so, why need anything else? However, physical needs were one thing. There was something that she needed to say to him. Something that she hadn't, but needed to. It was only when she sat down, and he sat beside her did she respond to him. "I want you to listen to what I have to say." The words were scary to anyone that knew what a break up sounded like, even if that wasn't the case here, it still had that seriousness to it. She took a deep breath as her sapphire eyes meeting his. "I'd never lie to you. I'd never lay with another man; or woman. I'd never steal from you. Never hurt you, nor take you for granted." Her left hand moved up and began removing the sling from around her neck. "I'd never keep something from you unless I had to. You aren't stupid, and I know you know that there is a reason I've been out late. Why I met with McAlister. You may not know exactly why, but you choose not to ask." She hissed softly as she removed the sling and pulled it from her arm. The sounds of the brace in her arm could be heard as she lowered her arm against the couch. He'd see the black and blue coloring of her shoulder and up her neck. The discoloration would disappear, but overtime. The area at which the blade had entered was bandaged up, so he couldn't see the wound itself, but the area around it told a painful tale. Scarlett took hold of his hand and moved it under her elbow, her hand directing his palm to cup it. He'd be holding her arm, whether it be a lot or a little, he'd become her arms support. She'd be able to move her arm again within the next couple of days, but movement will be slim. "You'll always be the one I turn to. Whether it be for comfort, training or a personal sling." She forced a smile, even if the pain screamed for a different expression. "You're all I need in this world. This disgusting, brutal world that seems to want to tear us apart at every turn." Her heart raced, wanting him to take her into his arms and hold her tightly to him. Protect her from everything there was that could harm her. There was a painful chuckle as she leaned forward, she leaned her head forward, pressing her forehead against his own. "There is always a reason for what I do, and going to someone else to train is an example of that..." Scarlett wasn't joking, but there was a playful tone in her voice "Can you forgive me?" |

“No.” Wraith had moved to support her arm, to help her find somewhere the pain would be bearable, but now the single word hung between them. She had asked for forgiveness but it was understanding he offered her. His understanding. The shade had been a creature of few words, never before in his life did he need so many to express something so simple. It was his reality. “You are not a possession to be owned, or a slave beholden to me or any other. You are free to be who you choose to be, to love whoever you choose to love.” There was no other truth he needed to hold to. It was the greatest gift he envied her... “There is no promise you can put into words that I cannot read in your eyes or in your heart. No action you need to justify to me.” He was not a fool, he chose not to look, not to ask questions because he did not want the answers. He was not afraid... he was as aware as she was of the possibilities which lay before them. That was why he chose to embrace her, to treasure every moment he spent with her. There was no room in his life for blame. Scarlett had been the one to warn him about regrets. Since that moment he had none, there had not been a single moment he doubted his own heart or questioned hers. There were no walls, emotional or otherwise, that he hide behind. There was one reality he had already resigned himself to and that one day he would lose her... somehow, somewhere. Time was the cruelest of all the masters he was enslaved to. “I stand beside you in this life because you are who I have lost my heart to, and because you allow it. If for a moment I believed it was otherwise, I would not burden you with my affections.” The words were etched with the depth of his emotions, every dark corner of the room which bent to his will echoed that sentiment. How she could look at him and see something beautiful was beyond him. Wraith was a monster, he was something which should have terrified her, he destroyed lives... families... left ruin in his wake. “So when you ask if I can forgive you, the answer is no...” His shadowed eyes finally looked up into her sapphire flames. He was still inescapably drawn to her, as helpless as any moth. “...because there is nothing to forgive.” |

Was it possible for Scarlett to fall even more in love then she already had? She doubted that it was possible, but after hearing what he just said to her it made her wonder if she had fallen even farther. Her heart, body and soul was his to have for her life. The only way that they'd be pulled apart, is if someone took her life. There was nothing in this world that would take him away from her. Even if the Empress tore him from her arms, she'd fight every second of her life to take him back. Even if it took every day till she died of old age, she'd fight. "Mmm...I love you" Scarlett's good arm moved up and wrapped around his neck. Had they had a normal relationship, it would not have been there own. They were destined to have this hardship, because they were two strong people that could handle it. There were moments that she had wished life was easier, but then remembered that good things always had a sour patch. Theirs just happened to come in the beginning. Pulling herself closer to him, he'd feel her fingertips from her dead-beat hand gently caressing his arm. Scarlett knew many things, but none more truer then her love for the man she held so close to her. She knew nothing of the kind of person Wraith was before he fell into her life, but one day she'd force him to give up all his secrets. That day wasn't today, nor tomorrow. It would probably be months or even a year until they new security as any normal couple. Yet she would wait a lifetime for him, nothing would make her want to rush their life together. The red head had always wanted a normal family; a husband and even kids. Though that normal life ran away from her years ago, and she knew that life with Wraith would be anything but normal. Which, honestly she was fine with. Neither of them were normal, and it's what made them so compatible. There was a splintering sound that came from her shoulder, and unfortunately it was too much for Scarlett to bare and she leaned back. Hissing between her teeth she clinched onto Wraith's shirt and cursed under her breath. She had all but forgotten about her shoulder for a moment so she could bask in Wraith, but it just had to fuck with her. Scarlett could close the wound completely if she could bare to do it herself. It was too bad that Wraith wasn't a pyromancer... A tear gathered at the bridge of her eye lid as she closed her eyes and shook her head. "Wraith..." She called for him, her hand that had gripped on his shirt pulled him towards her. "Kiss me" It was more of a demand then a request, she needed to be distracted and let's be honest... What better way then to kiss the man you love? And god did she love the way he kissed her passionately. Whether the treatment was unorthodox, would any form of medication really take the pain away? |

Kissing her was one thing Scarlett never needed to ask him to do. Wraith loved losing his senses to her lips, feeling the world spin and finally settle again only to be turned upside down. But this time he held back, and it killed him to do it. There was no madness threatening to swallow them, no blissful insanity waiting at the edge of their passion. With a sigh of reluctance the shade pulled back. Not completely, but enough to give her breathing room. “There is someone who could help you...” There was hesitation in his voice, as though for the first time since they met the shadow was uncertain of something. “There is a healer who can help.” It was not that he had been particularly vague, there was just the sense that he had left out a lot of details. Did they matter? Wraith wanted to take away her pain, it hurt him to know how much agony she was in. And he did know. It was present in every line that marked her face. He would not force her to accept his help, but he would offer it. Her fist would have still been curled into his shirt holding him hostage against her, his hand which had not been supporting her elbow bushing into her hair. He could have kissed her into submission, distracted her until anything sounded like a good idea. Probably... It was keeping himself from falling over the edge as well that would have been the hardest. How could she have been so beautiful? Everything in him begged her to allow him to do this one thing. If the healer he had in mind would even come. There was history there and wounds the shade did not want to reopen, but for Scarlett he would have faced any demons. |

As much as she hated for him to reject her, she knew he had a good reason for it. The splintering sound wasn't good, and the last place she wanted to go was to another hospital. Scarlett didn't take hard drugs, for more reasons then one, so a healer would be nice to take the pain away. It would also be nice because she could feel the tightening of her chest and heat rising to her chest again. The internal bleeding hadn't been completely taken care of at the hospital, but that was no one's fault other than Scarlett's. She's too hard headed to let anyone tell her what to do, one day it was going to get her seriously hurt or worse. "Okay..." Scarlett knew that Wraith had all the best intentions, and all he wanted was for her to be safe. He could have demanded her to take his help, and she still wouldn't have said no. Through the pain in her eyes, Wraith would see the content and joy she had being with him. Even if the pain shot through her body, it was as if the love for him was fighting to keep it contained to just her shoulder. Like a war zone, there was two sides to her at the moment. He made her want to smile through pain, which she tried to do. Whether or not it looked retarded or not, she did it anyways. Scarlett dropped her head a bit, and cleared her throat. A very light cough came from her lips as she shook her head. A metallic taste on her tongue caused her to bring her hand from his shirt to her mouth. Licking the tips of her middle and index finger, she noticed a crimson color covering her fingertips. Bearing her teeth, she wiped her fingers against the palm of her hand and took a deep breath. "I think it's best..." She swallowed hard and leaned back away from Wraith. She didn't know how he was going to get ahold of this healer, but if he needed to call him he knew where her house phone was. Maybe leaving the hospital wasn't the smartest choice. But, how could she stay away from Wraith? He was her natural drug that made her feel better. Maybe not a healer, but he eased her pain. |

Wraith had to tear himself away from her, carefully releasing her arm so not to cause her further pain before stepping across for the cordless house phone. He had never taken liberties before, not of Scarlett or her hospitality. And in a strange way she had given her consent. The number he pressed into the phone could have been any old number. And it rang forever before finally picking up. When it did, there was nothing on the other end of the line, it was faith that made Wraith speak. “I need your assistance.” Even Scarlett could have heard the pause, the eternity which stretched until the sound of a voice could be heard on the other end of the line. Too soft for her to make out, but enough to say that someone responded. “The Kagano Towers, second penthouse. The elevator code is 24578.” There was no hesitation as he gave the number, no thought that it could have ever been misused. If Scarlett felt otherwise it would have been a simple matter to have the number changed with security. As he put the phone down he stepped to the door ensuring it was unlocked. Never in her life would she have seen the shade so unguarded. Not that any creature in its right mind would have lived walking through that door uninvited with Wraith present. With nothing more to do than wait he found his way back to Scarlett’s side. Easing onto the couch so it did not move was no small feat. “Thank you.” Was all he said, his hand brushing the stands of her hair back behind her ear. She was pale, exhausted, bleeding somewhere internally. There must have been damage to her lungs for the blood to get into her mouth. Bruising possibly, how brutal had the training been?! Time was all it would take now, and that was something he could not rush. Would not rush. Every moment, no matter how painful he wanted to remember. She had asked him to kiss her, to take away the pain or make her forget about it for a while. Now, there was nothing holding him back. Dipping his head closer to her lips he would have closed his eyes, allowing every other sense to take hold. He could smell her sweet scent beyond the stain of blood, taste the metallic tang of her blood from her lips. Neither could have made him shrink from her, reel in the passion he felt for her all the time. Nor would he have wanted it too. Even if it was only a moment, one heartbeat he would have shown her how much he loved her without holding back. No reservations, no fear of hurting her. He could never have hurt her. It was about time he accepted that fact. He may have been her drug, but she was his... intoxicating ecstasy. In that there would never be secrets between them, Scarlett would always know how he felt, how much he ached. |
