Niwa's Recent News
  • 19 April 2015 -- Niwa is under new management!

Niwa is now under new management as we strive to stand up the the standards of fun and entertaining roleplaying we have so far provided here at Niwa. Today makes the start of a campaign to bring in new members as Head Admin Akaiken and Support Admin Sparky work together to improve and uphold the current face of Niwa and keep us all moving forward!

They said this was a city for our kind, they said it was a safe haven from the rest of the world. This was suppose to be the city where we where safe from regular humans. But, in a city where Meta-Humans run rampant, is there such thing as safety? When taking what you want is as simple as waving your hand, or closing your eyes, how can there be law? In this city, the truth is there is only one source of law, and that are the different criminal organizations that have formed all around us. The only order is that of the darkest part of humanity, of criminal organizations where the strong thrive while the weak gasp for air. This is Niwa Nights.. This is our home.

Can you survive it?

The odd thing may have been that she hadn't cried. Not once. There were no tear stains on her cheeks, her eyes were glossed over but not red with the usual puffiness that comes with the expected reaction when a tragedy happens. She hadn't said a word all day, not to anyone, and she hadn't been answering her cell phone or her Bangle. She had given one-word responses to the police, simple yes or no answers to some much more complicated questions, but they couldn't blame her, it couldn't be helped.

She'd received the call at school, the director had interrupted her class and called her out. She knew it wasn't good news, not from her powers in the slightest (which was odd... she knew she'd had a bad feeling in the morning when she first woke up, but she simply attributed that to the fact that she hadn't slept well because her grandfather had needed medication throughout the night, and kept forgetting where it was or what it was, so she was frequently up to help him), but simply by his tone, and he wouldn't look her in the eye. Normally, he had no problem with that. He told her to grab her things, and follow him to the administration office. It was odd, as well, that they were the only two in there - not even the secretaries had stuck around to gossip as they normally did. He told her, and dismissed her home, or what was left of it, rather. She left without saying a word - no asking how, no why, no hysterics of any sort. She had just looked shocked for a moment, before silently nodding and leaving the campus. When she arrived at the apartment, only her grandparent's apartment had caught fire, there was no evidence of anything, and there was barely enough left of their bodies to determine if they were dead when the fires started, or if they were alive and burned to death.

If anything, Aislin was somewhat glad for that much - she wanted to be ignorant of someone murdering her caretakers, but she also didn't want to imagine them burning alive and unable to flee or call for help, for the sake of both of them being bedridden for the last three days or so.

And now she was standing on the street corner, staring down at a slip of paper, but not really seeing it. This was the address, but she wasn't sure what she was expecting. This was the only place she figured she could go, though, at least for the time being, at least until she got her head back on straight and had time to think. Time to figure out where she'd go or what she'd do, what there was to even do about it all.

She shifted the backpack on her shoulders uneasily, chewing her lip a bit. All she'd taken out of the apartment today was her books and an extra jacket, it was cold today, especially with the setting sun. Oddly enough, however, she wasn't wearing it - it was still folded in her bag, waiting for its purpose to be fulfilled, but she was too numb to care about it all. The bite of the cold evening breeze didn't hinder her much, if at all, and if it did, she certainly didn't show it. Hell, she didn't show much of anything right now, her face was eerily blank, distant. She didn't even realize she'd started walking toward the house, but suddenly she was there, at the door, and she tore her eyes from the paper long enough to stare at the door. She hesitated, then brought a shaking hand to it, tapped three times. She didn't have the strength right now to make an audible noise - the doorbell met her fingertip the next moment in the day's waning sunlight.

It was times like these that she was glad that red hair of hers fell haphazardly and whipped freely around in the wind - she wouldn't have to look him dead-on, and if she started losing it, started crying, he wouldn't see it.

The numbness was starting to fade away, just a bit, and she felt a pain in her chest.

She should've stayed home today, maybe then her grandparents wouldn't be...

Aislin blinked, clearly a little confused by his words. How on earth did someone manage to not feel comfortable in their own home, or in their own bed? She'd never heard of such a thing, but then, this was Shinji. If she'd learned anything, it was generally not to question his quirks, there was always a reason. And sometimes, it was best not to know what those reasons were.

She had paused her bed-making long enough to see him exit the room, but as soon as he had, she went right back to work, spreading the sheets out on the bed and then tucking them into place, one by one, before she was done and found herself sitting on the bed's edge. That was probably a mistake, because her mind was racing the next moment. Her thinking would likely be the death of her, at this rate. She sat there for a few moments, reflecting. She didn't have any pictures of any of her family, no notes or letters or heirlooms with her, nothing to remember at least her grandparents by. With time, their faces would start to fade from her memory - she'd still have memories of them, sure, but time would pass and memories would fade, and maybe forgetting the faces to the memories would be better than remembering them in full and intricate detail.

She didn't want to think like that, though, and just then a thought struck her - Faction II was full of informants and spies and who-knew-what-else. Maybe somebody knew something? But she didn't want to pester Shinji any more than she already had... Dammit. Aislin's back hit the freshly-made bed and a sigh of frustration left her as she stared up at the ceiling.

At least the bed was comfy.

Everything had seemed down and pat to him, meaning that a break for tonight was much needed.

Having been about fifteen minutes since he sat back down, Shinji saved all the information he had gathered and shut everything down for the evening. Standing up again from his couch, he made his way over to the kitchen and took out a small glass from one of the cabinets nearby. Taking the Brita filter from the refrigerator, Shinji poured himself a small glass of water before putting it back inside. Picking up his glass from the kitchen counter, Shinji took a look around his kitchen and realized just how empty everything seemed to be. Will things change because of his new living situation?

Probably not. Shinji wasn't much of a man for change in his personal life, with the notable exception of the red haired young woman in the bedroom.

After a few minutes of laying in the bed, her mind started to wander, ticking away. She sat up, stretching a little, before quietly leaving the room, and beginning to meander about the house, exploring a bit. After all, if she was going to be staying here, she may as well know where things were, right? She didn't touch too much, didn't try to overstep any boundaries just yet, if she dared to at all.

It didn't take her too long to find almost anything, but then she came across another door. She'd already found the bathroom, the closet... What was this room? She knew Shinji lived alone, that much was blatantly obvious, so she didn't think to knock before opening the door to the room. Something stopped her though, when the door was about a third of the way opened, and she wasn't sure what exactly it was. She'd gotten a bit of a chill, though, and she knew it wasn't the type of chill that just happened when a room hadn't been opened up for a long while.

After a moment of hesitation, a second to let the feeling try to pass (although, honestly, it didn't; not fully), she pushed the door open the rest of the way. She knew she should've stopped herself, but she wandered into it before she could, and started to look around from about two feet in.

What. The. Hell?

The last thing Shinji knew, Aislin was laying down in the bedroom and trying to calm herself down from everything that had just transpired in her life. Now, he could suddenly hear her feet proceeding to the one place in the house that he didn't dare visit himself. Keeping his drink with him, Shinji promptly made his way over towards the open door to where she had been. Shinji stopped himself by the doorway when he had seen her figure inside the room, taking a look around but not touching anything. Shinji was, for the first time in a long time, visibly nervous about what would happen from her discovering this room.

This was, after all, Shinji's old bedroom.

This was the room he'd kept when his father had still lived here, back before he had been turned into what he is today. This room held everything in Shinji's life prior to him coming to school in Japan, back when he was just a high school kid from California with a new opportunity to move forward in Niwa. Photographs of him were spread out, some with friends and some when he played Tennis. A few trophies were on a shelf on the far side of the room, all of them related to Tennis, and a few other knick knacks from his time in California were scattered around the room. All of these things shined a bit of light on the life he lead before he came here, before he became one of the leaders of Cerberus.

"...Do you...need anything?" Shinji asked, his voice a little bit uneven as he spoke to her. This was the first time anybody from his time in Japan, let alone Cerberus, found anything from his previous life. What was she going to do about this?

Aislin didn't think she'd ever seen so many tennis-affiliated photos and trophies. Beyond even that, it seemed... Normal, which seemed odd to think, really, but looking at it, that's what it came down to. This seemed like a normal room for someone. Why was he hiding it, why wasn't he using it? She had only taken a half a step toward one of the pictures of Shinji smiling with his friends - something else she was having a hard time registering, because Shinji was a really serious guy from what she knew of him.

Then she heard Shinji speak, and froze up a bit, another chill snapping up her spine. But it wasn't as bad now, for some reason... And why did he sound different? He sounded nervous; was she not supposed to be in here? Probably not, given what she'd found, just bits and pieces to the puzzle of his past, but... "No... I doona' need anythin'...

"S-sorry, I was jus' lookin' around, an'..." She sounded a little nervous herself, didn't turn to face him or leave. She knew he was standing in the doorway, she couldn't leave regardless right this second. Instead, she took a couple steps foreward, to where some of the photographs were laid out, and moved her hand like she'd touch one or pick it up, though she hesitated at the last second and drew her hand back, sliding it into her pants pocket as if to keep herself from repeating the action.

"Why do ya' sound so nervous..? An' how come ya hide all'o this?" She asked a little quietly, hesitating a bit again before moving, turning to face Shinji's trophies and glancing over the name and dates on them, but still keeping her hands to herself. He'd worked for these things and had met those people, why did he hide it? She still wasn't sure of hardly half the details, she was sure, but she did know he looked a lot happier in those photos than she could recall seeing him at all since she'd met him. Why hide it? She looked over to him, finally, a little sheepish still because she felt like she was definitely intruding now. But he did seem nervous, not mad necessarily, not yet... But definitely uneasy that she'd found his room.

"...because this isn't who I am anymore."

Shinji watched hesitantly as Aislin's hands seemed to wander over some of his things, but breathed a little easier when he hand drew back into her own pocket. Shinji couldn't stay mad at Aislin, he did agree to let her stay here, and something like this was bound to happen somewhere along the lines. Now, the real question Shinji had to face at the moment was what to do about what she had found? Shinji wasn't going to kill her, nor was he going to lash out at her for being curious about the rest of the house, but he needed to do something about this. He stood there for another moment, taking a deep breath before he decided to tell Aislin the truth about what all this meant.

"When I came here for the first time, to Japan, I really had no idea what I was doing here or what I wanted to do. I knew what I liked, for sure, but I was more drawn to the fact that I would get to see my father again. This isn't to say I didn't like where I was, I really loved it, but I was excited by the prospect of something new. I always figured I can go back at anytime, see what I've missed with my friends back there and that all would be well. Unfortunately, that's not something I can do anymore...

There was another pause, before:

"As a leader of Cerberus, I need to be taken seriously. I can't be the young American fool anymore, and I can't have other people see me as such. They need to know that my hands are the capable ones, firm in the face of uncertain demise with only a vague promise of success. I can no longer be the young and reckless young man in these pictures, I need to be the guiding example of what we can accomplish if we all come together to make it work. My life, at least for now, is strictly about Niwa."

Aislin blinked a bit, listening as Shinji explained himself. He mentioned his father again, who wouldn't be in any of the pictures, but.. If he'd been so excited to see him before, why wasn't his father still living with him, or at least visiting? More than a few things didn't add up in her mind, but for the time being, it wasn't her place to ask, she'd already stepped over a line and she'd only been there for what, an hour or less?

"Ye' doona' look reckless in these pictures.. Ye' look happy, confident. Those doona' exactly mean reckless." She pointed out, looking over to one of the pictures for a moment, before looking back to him. He'd made a hell of a point, though, it was hard to believe he was the same person as the happy kid in the photos.

"Too many secrets build up ta' stress, turns into a rot in yer stomach and it'll kill ye' from the inside out. I doona think there's a soul in Cerberus that doesn't take ye' seriously, Shinji, but I'm thinkin' ye' take yerself too much so. There's no reason t'hide who ye' were, because one way or another, ye' still became who ye' are today, right? Ye've done more than enough t'prove yerself, ye've shown how capable ye are. I'm not sayin' go off an' run hell, I'm just... Suggestin' ye' might want t'relax, y'know? There's always gonna be trouble in the city, ye' know that."

She paused, watching him for a moment, before sighing quietly and then offering a small, albeit still nervous smile.

"Seein' this still hasn't changed anythin' for me, ye're still Shinji. I'm not takin' ye' any less seriously than I ever have, an' I doona think much differently of ye' than I did ten minutes ago. But ye' should smile more, aye?" She tried lightly, hoping to lighten things a bit. Hell, if the photos were anything to go by, he did have a nice smile, it was a waste if he never used it.

"But I'll get out of yer room if ye' want."

"...I guess so. It's hard not to be secretive, though. I administer what our eyes see, what our ears hear, and what's valuable as information to use both to our benefit and to another's disadvantage. I deal with secrets day in and day out, and it's what helps us keep going for so long. But now...it seems as if my cat's out of the bag. If you'd like to stay and take a look around, be my guest. And if you have any questions about anything in here, just ask."

Shinji had no other choice in the matter, he now had to be extremely open with Aislin. Shinji couldn't think of another person, not even Gavin, that knew as much about him as Aislin did at the moment. Looking over everything in the room, though, it had managed to bring back a lot of good memories about his life back in the United States. Shinji's lips curled into a soft smile as he watched Aislin, wondering what she'd ask about first, if anything at all.

Aislin blinked, surprised he had given her permission to continue looking around, though she returned the smile and nodded lightly, moving around a little and continuing to look. Though, for the most part, she was gazing at pictures and his awards, she did stumble - almost literally - across something else. Luckily, she'd tripped over herself more than over the object in question.

Hesitating only momentarily, she reached down and picked it up, handling it carefully and lightly running her fingers against the face of it. She held the grip a little awkwardly at first, but after a moment of getting used to it, she fixed herself and grinned a little, looking back to Shinji with a cocked head and with her arm extended, as if offering the racquet to him.

"I 'aven't played tennis before, could ye' teach me sometime? T'morrow maybe, if ye' doona' already have plans?" Maybe it would help him relax and get out some of his stress if she learned to play and went to a court to play a match with him once in a while. She wouldn't press him for too many details of his past or his life, not right now, though she was definitely curious. That could wait, she had time for that.

"I...uhh..."

This was an unusual request, particularly from somebody who had just been through a traumatic experience like she's been through, but maybe she needed something like this. Tennis was often a good way for Shinji to relieve some of his pent up stress, maybe he needed this now too? Either way, he liked the idea of coming back to Tennis after such a long time and getting back into the...swing...of things. Shinji had just thought of that pun in his head, and for a second it made him giggle.

"...yeah, sure. I'll teach you. I haven't played in a while, but maybe it'll be good for us."
