Personality: Braden is a nice guy who always manages to find himself being screwed. And unfortunately for him, not sexually. He has a deep love of writing and journalism, but his lack of tenacity has caused him to miss out on many opportunities. His calm, quiet nature has worked against him in his job, where being loud and unrelenting helps to get a story, and staying silent loses you money. He finds his own life to be boring, which is why he devotes his time to writing about other people. He is also quick to run and hide to avoid conflict, rather than stand up and fight. Personal History: Braden was born in a suburb outside of Chicago to two loving parents. He grew up in a quiet neighborhood with nearly no problems. His relatively unexciting life prompted him to travel to New York for college. His time there was a bit more interesting, including some frat parties and nights he would never speak of again, but there was still something missing in his life. He discovered journalism there, and graduated with honors. Rather than return home, Braden decided to stay in New York and write about the interesting people who were living more exciting lives than he was. Instead of an uneventful suburban life, Braden found himself living a depressing life in New York, living alone in a cramped apartment above a Chinese restaurant and working for an unheard of newspaper called "What's Up New York?!" writing trivial stories about cat pageants and snowstorms. One night, after finishing up an article at two in the morning, Braden found himself absorbed in a documentary about Japan. The culture and beautiful scenery made him fall in love. He fell asleep that night and dreamt about being a star reporter in Japan, covering significant stories and meeting important people. Impulsively, Braden decided that going to Japan would be his ticket out. He worked hard and saved up for two years before finally quitting his pathetic job and flying to Japan to start over again. Before leaving, Braden secured himself a position at a supposedly fast-growing newspaper in a city called Niwa. The city's website had plenty of beautiful pictures of giant city buildings and parks covered with quaint Japanese beauty. After buying his plane ticket and paying the deposit on his new apartment, Braden found himself completely broke. He didn't care, though, because he was convinced that he was starting a new chapter in his life, one that would finally bring him happiness and success. And then he actually got to Niwa. The pictures were generally accurate, but he sensed that something was off. To make matters worse, the up-and-coming newspaper he was going to work for had been shot up the day before he arrived. Something about gang violence and territories. Now jobless, terrified, and with no way to get home, Braden decided that he would have to be a freelance journalist in order to get by. Gifts/Skills/Abilities/Powers: Braden has the uncanny ability to be at the worst place at the worst time. This is, however, just an unfortunate reality: he has no special powers to speak of. Items/Equipment: Braden always carries around a notebook and pen to jot down notes, a tape recorder, and a digital camera. Additional Information: Braden loves cats. Introduction RP: Going to the local convenience store to pick up a few essentials shouldn't become a harrowing adventure. But for Braden, just stepping outside of his apartment could become an ordeal. The problem was that he always froze at signs of trouble. When fight or flight kicked in, sometimes he didn't even have the ability to run. No, he'd just stand there, helplessly, too stunned to do anything. He didn't like to think of himself as a coward, but a nagging voice in the back of his head always told him to man up. "Thank you," Braden said to the store clerk, proud of the accent he had developed with much practice over the past two years. He picked up his single bag and headed for the exit of the store. "Gimme all you got, lady," a rough voice said from behind Braden. He turned to look and saw a tall, thin young man in a hooded sweatshirt looming over a female clerk. Oh, shit... Braden thought. People near the counter started to scramble away, but Braden just stood there, watching the robbery in progress. "Now!" the tall man shouted. He raised his hand and Braden thought he saw electricity spark in his palm. The clerk quickly handed over the scant contents of the register. The man shoved a few handfuls of cash into his pocket before turning and rushing past Braden to exit the store. "What the hell have I gotten myself into?" Braden mumbled, finally able to move again.
