Here at Lellinias Weyr the weather is turning cold. Winter is around the corner and there is a threat of snow in the air. The wind whips through the Weyr and the riders and weyrfolk are dressing up warm.

Harnesses! A Lesson in Leather!; Lesson 4

L'iam was tired and cranky. He had been dealing with the quarter master all afternoon, barganing and begging and demanding the lenght of leather he would need for the Weyrling harnesses.
The quartermaster was old and hidebound, not wanted to profer up anything with exact measurements that L'iam simply couldnt give!
He knew pretty well for the normal colors, but the Goldstones and Aurora were proving difficult and L'iam wanted extra for them.
This was the root of the argument that L'iam won after finally decided he could pay now and have the old coot repay him when he saw the leather wasnt waisted.
Disgusted, L'iam went to the kitchens for some comfort food and was rewarded with a thick soup on the night hearth. He could never sleep mad, and couldnt afford to toss and turn.
Finally, L'iam made it to his weyr and slept well past dawn.
When he did eventually wake, he quickly grabbed the leather and metal buckles, a large box full of oil and other tools and set up the classroom in the Weyrling Barricks.
Once everything was ready, L'iam had Reth call for the 'lings.

<To all Weyrlings>
L'iam needs your riders in the classroom as soon as possible for you next lesson. You are to wait outside to be measured, then we will go to the lake and practice flying.

Soon after Reth called them, the first of the new riders strolled into the classroom. Across L'iam's desk were the long stips of leather. Three of them total, and each more than long enough for a handful of still growing dragons. The box was open to one side of the desk, and 3 large bottles of oil and many trays and other leather working tools made up its contents.

L'iam waited for the 'lings to get settled before beginning the lesson.

We have been called for a lesson! Averyth's voice jarred through Jandolyn's concentration. Pokey and Topaz chirped when Jandolyn jumped. At least the tincture wasn't ruined. As Apprentice Healer, Jandolyn was required to make all the smelly and messy mixtures that she was able to which the older Journeymen and even Healers preferred to hand off to her. There was a downside to being proficient in her craft!

"Let me just finish up here, Avi. It should only take a second. There!" and with that, Jandolyn pushed a cork into the tiny bottle and marked it with the contents. She smoothed her long hair out of her face as she made her way to the classroom.

A few of the Weyrlings were already standing about in loose groups, chatting with each other while waiting for the others. Jandolyn noticed the postures of the 'lings indicated they were waiting on something. To the question in Jandolyn's mind, Averyth said, We must be measured. L'iam is within. Today we practice flying at the lake. A question colored the statement and Jandolyn could tell her dragon wondered if today would be more 'flying' lessons in the lake.

Jandolyn stood admiring Averyth. She really ought to join in conversation with the other Weyrlings, but she was absorbed in her dragon. The changing seasons of the Turn had brought health to Averyth's shredded wing and strength to the muscles of her lithe body. Jandolyn was amazed at how little the scars showed, but if you looked closely, they were still there, faintly interlaced with the natural marbling that made up Averyth's jade coloring. Jandolyn ran a hand over the translucent wing that Averyth had gracefully tucked against her side, marveling that the scars were not even raised anymore.

*OOC--please, somebody strike up a conversation. I am so tired of inner monologue and want to get more stuck in the game!**

Danei stifled a yawn behind her hand as she waited in line to get a late start on breaking her fast. She'd been up since dawn poring over her Lesson notes and then she'd given Dsirth, her beloved ruby lifemate, a bath and oiling. After the Ruby had eaten her fill from the feeding pens. She'd thought she'd finally gotten used to seeing blood and flesh and bone, but she'd thought wrong. She kept her control in place to keep herself from shuddering at the images that raced through her mind from this morning.

Yes, those herdbeasts were quite delicious. Came the satisfied interloping thought from the Ruby.

Keep it to yourself! Danei snapped. Sorry, but I'd prefer to have my food cooked well done, thank you!

There was a slight pause before Dsirth snorted and remained silent.

I'm sorry, love. I didn't mean to snap at you. Danei sighed at finally having some time without her beloved talking to her, she could concentrate on getting her own food and a cup of klah before heading for a table. She was in the middle of her meal when she heard her lifemate's voice in her mind again.

Mine, we are called for Lessons!

I'm coming, Dsirth! Danei quickly finished her food and klah before rushing out of the Dining cavern to head for the Lesson room. She arrived shortly, almost out of breath from breaking into a dead run to try to be on time. She didn't want to be late for Lessons. She entered the room, "Good morning, Master." She turned and found a seat near the back of the room. Dsirth stood outside, waiting patiently.

Lessons, mine, Imahyth said, waking up from his nap and stretching luxuriously. B'lor was working on patching up one of his tunics. His fine clothes weren't faring very well in weyrling training, and they kept getting ripped and dirty. It was a pity, really. When he graduated he would have to order some new things from the tailor. Putting the tunic aside, he followed Imahyth to the lesson area.

All of the dragons were waiting outside. It was impressive to see them all together like that. They were growing up fast. I have to wait outside. We'll be measured, and then we get to fly! The bronze's voice rang with excitement. B'lor smiled and gave Imahyth a pat on the shoulder as he headed inside.

Most of the other weyrlings were in groups, chattering. B'lor hovered awkwardly in the doorway. He hadn't really gotten close to any of his fellow weyrlings. He saw Jandolyn standing alone and went to join her. "Hi, Jandolyn. It looks like Averyth is doing well," he said politely.

Jandolyn nodded in response and said, "Yes, I was just thinking the same thing! Today is a big day for us. For the longest time, while I tended her wounds and long after, I feared Averyth wouldn't fly." Jandolyn shifted her gaze skyward. "Today we'll find out for sure if the damage was permanently disabling." Jandolyn then made eye contact with the young man beside her to judge his reaction. Most of the weyrlings were touchy when talk turned to the terrible double death that had clouded their Hatching Day. Averyth's injury had been caused by an unpredictable attack from the newly hatched bronze. "How about you? And..." Jandolyn searched her memory but could not come up with the name of the dragon that was B'lor's lifemate. "Well, are you ready for this?"

Lessons lessons lessons Mine!

Terlara laughed as her dragon bounded out into the bowl. Even at a Turn old and well grown, she still acted like a particularly hyper canine puppy. She like as not always would. The green's hide rippled with color, exaggerating the way in which she was in constant motion.

"You wait outside. I'll be with you soon!" The youngest of the weyrlings made her way into the classroom.

Aha. Riding straps. Finally. Or close to finally anyway.

I'rin followed the girl into the classroom. He often seemed to end up nearly being bowled over by the enthusiastic greenrider. Astith...was definitely learning that greens (and other females) were different. He settled down outside, watching Eath and Averyth with equal interest.

Moving to take a seat he glanced at the straps. Hrm. Seemed that he was about to learn how to sew leather. That shouldn't be too hard, except in terms of taking a lot of practice.

And it was key to finally flying with Astith.

Freyja

Freyja and Rhyvath were relaxing when the message for their next lesson came in. Rhyvath love its time for lessons. We get to fly soon!

She could tell the ruby dragon was pleased with this and the pair headed out to the classroom where they were to learn how to create flying straps, and then later they would go out to learn to fly.

Freyja entered the room and looked around wondering who she should go talk to. er only real friend was Neryma, and even she was a bit distant now. She stood by herself off to one side hoping someone she knew would come in, or someone would come to talk to her. She didn't feel comfortable around alot of the others still and wondered if she ever would

C'ton and Nomuth wandered out to the lesson glad that they were finally going to be allowed to fly. Nomuth had wanted to fly for a long time, but they hadn't been allowed.

C;ton wasn't thrilled about having to learn to sew but it was a necessary skill and he new it was good he was going to learn it. Hopefully the lesson would go well. As he entered the room he saw Danei and headed over to her. "Hello. Dsirth is looking well."[/i]

R'EAN & KOAKYATH

There was early, and then there was early. Of course, R'ean picked the former, and not the latter. Amazingly, he managed to get up before L'iam woke anyone up. He was rather proud of himself, if anything. With more then a few grunted curses, and a couple of points from Koekyath, the two found themselves in the kitchens, the Blue sitting outside in the sun, while the rider of the pair grumpily tore into a bubbly pie (more then one if he managed to get a wink at that drudge) and slurping happily on some klah. This, was a nice morning. One I'm going to ruin for you.

R'ean groaned, slamming his head on the table with a curse that wasn't for the innocent ears around him to hear. New candidates doing chores, young Weyrbrats. They'd learn eventually though, so he was just giving them an early edication. "Le'sons?" Reth calls us! You're to go to the classroom, I'll be off to the lake to be measured. Koakyath chirped, much too happily in R'ean opinion. The Blue needed to spot enjoying the torture his 'beloved' rider was receiving. The Blue chuckled, purring at a Green fire-lizard as he waited for his to get here. Even R'ean had standards, that was just a little wrong. Or at least R'ean thought so. It pays to make all females happy. With a mournful look at his klah, the boy gulped the rest of the cup down, putting it down only to stride out of the room after the Blue. Of course, I do have to be measured before hand. 'Measu'd fa' wat?' I dont know. You're the rider, you tell me!

The pair was soon outside the classroom, R'ean slapping the Blue out of the way as they both tried to enter the classrom, snarling at the Blue as he tried to push him out the way. "Ya can' fi' in 'ere!" Kokyath chuckled, spinning away to swagger over to one of the females. At least they loved him. Do my eyes decieve me? No beauty such as this could possibly live in a drab place, which is made all the worse by your beautiful form. He purred, eyes firmly fixed on Dsirth. I do hope you are well, dear Dsirth?

R'ean made a face at his dragon's antics, only hearing the words, and thnkful he coldn't see what his dragon was up to. Sure, he wasn't averse to a little...charm, but this was a little much. He looked around the room, shoving his hands in his pockets. Well, nearly everyone was in pairs. Meh, leave them be. R'ean sighed as he collapsed into a chair, sparing little to L'iam at the front. He was tired!

Abella had just finished oiling Atyith when the lavender told her of the lesson.
Reth says we will put our lake practice to good use today! And I am to be fitted for a harness!
Abella frown of concentration turned into a broad smile and she quickly stood to lead Atyith to the classroom when a thought suddenly hit her.
She groaned.
Whats wrong, mine? Why do you not want me to practice?
All that oiling to be redone! I only just finished! You may not be the largest dragon, but you are certainly long enough! And now you are about to go and undo a good 2 hours work!
Whats wrong, mine? Why do you not want me to You are getting faster at it! And I do help! Maybe the oil will dry before we get to the lake?
It's ok, Atyith. It is part of being a rider, and I wouldnt trade it for anything!
Or me?
No, you silly wherry! Of course I would never trade you! Now lets hurry!

When Abella got to the classroom, everyone was1 still standing around. She walked over to Freyja. Neryma hadnt made to the class yet, but was sure she wouldnt be long.

"Hi Freyja. How are you this morning? And how is your Ruby?"

Neryma woke early and took advantage of the morning. She had already checked on Ryn, who was doing fine and doting so over that queen egg! Auith was fed oiled and naping, so Neryma thought she would spend some time in the kitchen!
With the breakfast crowd filtering out, Ciena had started cleaning and prepping for the midday meal.
As soon as Neryma set foot in the kitchen, Ciena spotted her and called her over.
For the next hour at least, Neryma was mixing spices and testing ones that were already mixed. At Ciena's request she made a few small jars of 'special seasonings' to try on specific foods.
With a tall stool and her own little corner, Neryma was quite happy to help.
She was just cleaning up after replacing the jars when she felt Auith stirring.
Ciena must have noticed her pause and came to see what was wrong.
"Oh nothing." The expression on her face, though, was concerned and concentrated. At Ciena's look, Neryma explained.
"Just Auith is stirring. I am trying to keep my mind on her to see if she will wake, without waking her myself by my attentiveness.
So with a distant and tense expression, Neryma finished cleaning up the table. She was doing everything slowly and it was obvious she was in automatic mode.
Finally she looked up and smiled, the weird expression left and her eyes cleared.
"Lessons. That is why she was waking. Reth was calling us for lessons!"
Out of her spell, Neryma quickly finished up, thanked the Headwoman and made haste to the classroom. Auith was already waiting with the other dragons outside, so the goldrider went straight into the classroom.
To her surprise, not many were seated and L'iam seemed ver relaxed at the front of the room.
"Fitted for what Auith?" Neryma suddenly remember what the weyrling had said about the lesson.
Harnesses, mine. We will learn to fly soon!
Neryma smiled again and spotted Freyja and Abella.
"Hey girls. Whats going on?"

Freyja

Freyja turned as Abella came up to her. She smiled glad to have someone to talk to.

"She's doing good. Constantly needs something. But I love her anyway. What about your lavender? How is she?"

Freyja was waiting for an answer when she saw Neryma enter the room. She smiled and waved at her.

"Hey what's up? How is Aiuth? And Ryn? How is her clutch?"

Freyja stopped and waited for responses. She hoped the lesson would start soon as she couldn't wait to finally fly with Rhyvath.

L'iam stood up, happy with the promptness of his weyrlings and glad that they could be themselves around him. The small groups of standing 'lings, and those lounging in chairs by themselves was evidence that they were comfortable with him.
"Good morning. No need to be seated just yet. R'ean, C'ton. Will you grab up this leather? Danei, will you get the small leather marker out of this box?"
L'iam reached into the box himself and took a sharp knife, used only for cutting leather and material.
When everyone had their bundles, L'iam led the lot of them out to their waiting dragons.

Reth was just outside the room and ready so help L'iam.
He addressed the class again.
"Alright. I want all eyes over here. Dragons too. Reth and I will show you how to measure your dragon."
As Reth lowered his head, L'iam took one long strip of leather and looped it over Reths neck. He talked as he measured, 'marking' the leather with his hand.
"Now make sure, first of all, that you leave about this much growing room between the leather and your dragon.
Loop the leather over the head, then across here, and here." His explanation become mufffled as he reached under Reth's belly, and showed them an example of a full harness.
"Now once you have come to here, mark the leather." He drew his hand across to show the correct area to mark.
"Then we will cut the leather, and you will learn to treat it and assemble the harness. Then we will break for a meal and the dragons will take their first flight off the ground.
You all know they have been practice with Reth in the lake, and should all be proud of your dragons. Now I dont know for sure if I have enough leather, so lets start with the largest dragons and try not to waist any, or I'll send you to battle with the quarter master for more!"
L'iam thought for a moment.
"Neryma, please bring Auith here. She is the largest so lets start with her."
When Neryma was finished, they moved on to the bronze and aurora, then on down the line till everyone had their leather. To L'iam's great relieve, he had enough for another dragon, two maybe. If they were green or lavender.

At the sound of her name being called by L'iam, Danei stood up quickly and took out the marker he'd asked her to get from the box. She held it up with her right hand and looked at it briefly before standig to the side, waiting for further instructions. She could hear her beloved Dsirth speaking to one of her clutchmates outside. She smiled a bit lopsided at the one sided conversation she was only vaguely listening to. Danei took her bundle and waited again, off to one side as she watched L'iam measure and then 'mark' the leather.

Aravire took her leather bundle and marker and listened intently as the Weyrling master instructed, as well as shown them what they would be doing. Her stomach clenched at the thought of flying for the first time with her beloved Raeth.

We will be the best in the sky! So do not fear, AraMine.

Aravire laughed softly. I am not afraid, love. I'm just worried I might be too heavy for you.

You will never be heavy for me, AraMine. Never.

If you say so, love. Aravire waited for her turn with Raeth. She managed to measure the Aurora with only mild difficulty, and some help from L'iam and his Reth. She smiled at him and nodded her thanks before she and Raeth moved off to allow the next dragon to come and be measured.

And then a while later, it was Danei's turn. She managed to measure Dsirth accurately on her second try. The first time the leather had slipped from her hands before she could mark it. She glared at the strip of leather as she managed to get it done the second time.

C'ton stood when called upon and went to help gather the leather. He watched as each dragon was measured, starting with the young queen. When it came to him and Nomuth he looked at his dragon and then took a deep breath.

C'ton picked up the leather and slowly and carefully measured his dragon for flying straps. He measured Nomuth with minimal trouble, and only a small amount of coaching.

Later Freyja stood up and measured Rhyvath. The ruby was very excited about getting measured and she had trouble holding still. Eventually Freyja got her ruby to hold still long enough for her to take the measurements.

Freyja felt very proud of herself once she had accomplished this. It hadn't taken her too long, even with her fidgety dragon.

Neryma and Abella took their turns with everyone else.
As each dragon was measured, L'iam would help the weyrling cut the leather at the mark.
So now each weyrling had their rider harness, the weyrlingmaster excused the dragons for their practice and led the 'lings back into the classroom.
"The first thing we need to do is oil the leater. If anyone has any expierence with this, please help me keep an eye on those who dont."
L'iam then had them gather around the big desk in front of the room and gave them an example of how to oil the leather in long even strokes.
"Now I only have 7 jars of oil, so group up and push your desks together to share. There are enough brushes, but just barely so be careful. It takes forever to rinse dust and dirt out of an oil brush, so try not to drop them. If you need help at all, just raise your hand and I'll come see."
As the weyrlings grouped up, L'iam started walking amoung them, giving a word or advice or praise here and there and was generally satisfied with their work.
