I recently downloaded a bunch of Genesis songs from iTunes. I forgot how great they were. Any Genesis fans out there?

My personal favorite Genesis song:

I like their old stuff before they turned into a pop band. I went and saw Steve Hackett back in spring. Great concert, he played a lot of old Genesis stuff.

to me, the Collins "hits" era is screamingly 80's lite. Phil could really overdo it with the schmaltz. As Spas pointed out, there were 2 Genesis: the prog era with Hackett and Gabriel, and the pop Genesis when those two left and Phil took the lead vocals.

Both Genesis eras were fantastic!

Collins is up there with Brian Johnson and Phil Anselmo, as the few replacement frontmen that were able keep a band awesome, or even make them arguably better.

I'm not too familiar with the Peter Gabriel stuff but what I've heard I like.

Yeah, they're a bit hit and miss. I found myself downloading specific songs rather than albums but some of those songs are amazing. Collins is a great vocalist and his drumming is off the hook.

One of the most recgnizable drummers in all of rock. That Agnetha song, I know theres something going on, is ALL drums.

My fav Collins-Genesis song is Thats All. Super simple but a damn good song and thesong pivots on Phils very simple hi-hat 4-on-the-4 beat. Simple is better.

The Hackett/Gabriel era was much more experimental and progressive. They might have even been considered Art Rock for Gabriels live performances. Phil took them in a commercial direction and riches.

Selling England By The Pound is as good as it gets. This is a great track from it (there are many).

People who only know the Collins era would be shocked that Genesis were once more akin to King Crimson, Yes and the prog spectrum instead of pop rock.

Steve Hackett deserves more attention for his guitar work too.

For me, these were the songs of my childhood remotely related to Genesis.

Yeah, I'm going to have to check out the earlier Peter Gabriel stuff. I always liked his post-Genesis solo material.

In Phil Anselmo's case, he didn't keep Pantera awesome, he made them awesome. Most people don't know they were a glam band before Phil came along.

Land of Confusion is one that i listen to from time to time. Love the music video. One of the ones that I vividly remember as a kid. Another Day in Paradise is also another I really like when I'm in chill mode.

For anyone with an open mind, there is a mashup with Phil Collins' In the Air Tonight and Tupac's Staring through my rearview that I used to listen to a lot in high school. It's nowhere near the classic the original is, but it's a well done blend of 2 very different tracks.

Like Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC and Van Halen, both eras were great.
