One of the stupidest damn things I've seen in a long time. Exactly. It would be fine if they made the movie and it happens to get an "R" but to insist on making an R when they don't even have a script? This seems like a really bad idea.

It's definitely a weird combination. Tarentino's strength is in his dialog and storytelling. I don't know how well that will translate to the Star Trek franchise or how an F-bomb dropping Samuel L. Jackson Klingon laying down a furious vengeance upon James T. Kirk will go down with Trek fans.
