A while back I picked up the 7 movie Nightmare on Elm Street collection on Bluray. I had never watched any of the Elm Street movies in their entirety. I always thought they were lame but I got the Bluray collection dirt cheap. I had some time off and finally got around to checking them out. So far I've made it through the first 3.

A Nightmare on Elm Street- The first film in the series is a classic 80s horror flick. Wes Craven does an excellent job. Fun flick. Johnny Depp's first movie role. Lol.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2- Freddy's Revenge- Wes Craven unfortunately didn't direct the first sequel and it shows. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen in any genre. It's a giant homoerotic mess.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3- Dream Warriors- Craven is back for the Dream Warriors and compared to Freddy's Revenge this movie is Citizen Cane. This one is really good and even has Dokken in the soundtrack. lol.

Up next, The Dream Master.

Any fans of this series out there? I know there are a lot of children of the 80s on this board and this series is chock full of all kinds of 80s cheese. Discuss.

I was a horror movie geek as a kid, and was a big fan of Nightmare on Elm Street when it came out. I didn't get into overall quality of the movie but paid close attention to how well they pulled off horror/monster/gore special effects. I built my own Freddy glove in a Jr High jewelry making class. And made my own chest-bursting alien costume (from the movie Alien) for Halloween around the same time.

I couldn't tell you much about the movies, I only remember the first one generally. I do remember reading Fangoria magazine which previewed horror/gore movies and covered a lot of the special effects industry.

I was also a big Fangoria fan too and yeah, the practical effects on the Nightmare series are excellent. Freddy also has some killer one-liners. Especially like the head through the TV scene in Dream Warriors. "Welcome to prime-time, bitch!"

Oh man, absolutely love Freddy!

As a kid in the 90's, these were some of the funnest films to watch that i can remember. His influence & general presence in pop culture was groundbreaking for the horror genre. He stood out over Michael Meyers & Jason Voorhees because he actually had a personality! The films however seriously lack quality & fail the test of time miserably. The first one remains as one of the best horror films ever (according to me) & then Wes' New Nightmare in 1994 was also very good. The others are like watching intentional gag/comedy horror films - Still fun though.

Did the documentary Never Sleep Again come included, Wolfie? Must see Freddy material there & just an excellent film-making doc in general.

Yeah, Never Sleep Again is on the first disc and it is an excellent documentary on the making of the first film in the series. Wes Craven's history as a filmmaker is a funny one.

The 2010 reboot was a major letdown as well. I liked how they changed some things up but then they had the re-enactments from the original 1984 film that completely stripped it of originality.

I've always thought a prequel film about Fred Krueger would be interesting. Like, just what did he do to the children before he was burnt alive? Has potential IMO..

I like that idea. Have Eli Roth direct the prequel and make it brutal.

Exactly - How do you portray torture & murder to children while making it acceptable to screen while still being a good movie? Nearly impossible..

Any violence against children should be implied. It doesn't have to be, and shouldn't be, graphic. The idea of an origins story for Freddy Kruger, however, is a solid idea. Watching the first few of the Elm Street series I was wondering if there would be a flashback or something involving the parents killing this guy and making a pact to cover it up, but so far, nothing.

I believe the 2010 remake is the only one that touches on it a little bit...

I never cared for Freddy or Jason. Saw some of each series and never found them more interesting than meh. A lot of horror fans are super passionate about each franchise, I just never got into them. I preferred Hellraiser over both of these but only the first and second one were ok. As for the Phantasm series, none of them made a damn bit of sense but the olde man was scarier than Freddy, Jason and Pinhead combined.

The Tall Man FTW! Hellraiser and Phantasm are among my very favorite film franchises.
