First, I will always pick Bonn and Dave era over Brian and Sammy, but having said that, I saw Van Halen on the 5150 tour and Sammy a couple times in his prime and live---Dave sucked and Sammy sang his ass off. With Van Halen, they were drunk and Roth didn't sing most of the time he just did karate poses and did his howl constantly while Mike Anthony and Eddie did all the singing. Eds drunk solo was not good.
I saw Van Halen with Sammy on their first four back as a teen and The DLR band shortly after (with Vai and Sheehan). Arguably, DLR had the more talented band behind him, but Van Halen was far better, primarily due to the front man. Sammy was flawless, DLR was flat and lifeless outside of a few nonsense kicks. Fortunately for me, Cinderella was DLR's opening act and they were amazing.
You were nobody's fool.

Ha, I'm going to side with the David Lee Roth sucked live opinion. I think I told this story on the old board but I actually saw Van Halen open for Black Sabbath. It was Van Halens first tour and nobody really knew who they were and they got booed off the stage by all of the Sabbath fans. This was back when they had festival seating in old hockey arenas and the floor was all open to standing in front of the stage. I was up close to the stage and got pelted by people throwing plastic cups of beer up at DLR. He was way too flamboyant for a Black Sabbath crowd and kept doing those high pitched screams and silly karate kicks and chops. He got nailed by numerous beers and people were yelling to get the f off the stage.
