Sammy Hagar is 70 years old? I'm not sure why but this pisses me off.

He's probably not too happy about it either.

He now drives 45 and people shake their fist at him to get out of the fast Lane. He needs a blue pill to open a one lock box, three is impossible. But, he does have a bad motor scooter.

That is crazy but the Montrose days were in the early 70's I believe.

Although not the same, I always thought Ronnie Montrose was Americas version of Gary Moore from a guitar perspective.

I always preferred Hagar in Montrose and his solo stuff to Van Hagar. His autobiography bio is also pretty good.

Agreed but some of the Van Hagar stuff was stellar—Dreams, Why Cant this be Love. He might arguably have had the definitive hard rock voice like Dio was to metal.

I consider the Van Hagar stuff to be the best Van Halen from a musicianship perspective. Yes, Roth's first run with the band was fun, but Sammy's time in the band gave us a tight, polished sound that DLR could never achieve.

Hagar's vocals are what I didn't like. He sounded fine with Montrose and his various solo projects but with Van Halen, Hagar just seemed to try too hard and came off screechy. Roth isn't as strong a vocalist but he had the right vibe and tone for Van Halen.

Cbear, you mention the song Dreams and oddly enough that's the song that comes to mind when I think of Hagar's shortcomings as a vocalist for Van Halen. Contrast and compare to Roth.

To my ear, Hagar is almost unlistenable while Roth knows his vocal limitations and hits just the right tone for the song.

Now, listen to Hagar with Montrose.

There's none of that Van Hagar overextension and he sounds great.

First, I will always pick Bonn and Dave era over Brian and Sammy, but having said that, I saw Van Halen on the 5150 tour and Sammy a couple times in his prime and live---Dave sucked and Sammy sang his ass off. With Van Halen, they were drunk and Roth didn't sing most of the time he just did karate poses and did his howl constantly while Mike Anthony and Eddie did all the singing. Eds drunk solo was not good.

I saw Van Halen with Sammy on their first four back as a teen and The DLR band shortly after (with Vai and Sheehan). Arguably, DLR had the more talented band behind him, but Van Halen was far better, primarily due to the front man. Sammy was flawless, DLR was flat and lifeless outside of a few nonsense kicks. Fortunately for me, Cinderella was DLR's opening act and they were amazing.
