They could have been big had they had a decent guitar player. And a singer. And a drummer.

Horrid musicians. On a positive note, they never had to tune their guitars since it didn't matter.

Nice find Brian! Slayer was my very first concert. Here's Ghost on The Late Show. Good to see The Metal getting some mainstream respect.

Nah, I really mean it. Not doing it just to poke fun. I dont like thrash, but have never seen Slayers appeal. Just like Lars drum timing is all over the place, I dont think Kerry even bothers to tune and the riffs just seem blah. I dont see how Slayer ever got considered one of the big 4.

Ok, I'll bite. Slayer's original drummer is Dave Lombardo. Lombardo is universally recognized as a great drummer, one of the best. The drummer in the video is Paul Bastoph, another incredible drummer. So on that front you don't know what you're talking about.

Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman were mediocre guitarists but came up with some of the most memorable guitar riffs in all of Metal. King has improved over the years.. Hanneman unfortunately passed away. His replacement, who you can see in the video, is Gary Holt, a founding member of Exodus and a great guitar player. You have a tendency to let your biases taint your objectivity. You don't like Thrash therefore the musicianship sucks.

Slayer's popularity lies in their merger of metal with hardcore Punk. You've got metal riffs and lyrical themes mixed with the speed, anger and aggression of hardcore Punk. King and Hanneman were great song writers and their riffs all manage to sound evil as hell. Lombardo's off the hook double-bass fill-laden drumming ties it all together. Oh yeah, and Tom Araya is one of the best screamers in the business.

It's cool if you don't like Thrash but please don't shit over one of the genre's most beloved bands.

I dont think you understood my Lars/Kerry comment--it had nothing to do with the double bass drum pedal gimmick you love. The meaning was that just as Lars is a crappy drummer, Kerry King is a crappy guitar player. Both guys have sold alot of records so their limitations havent hurt their fanbase. I always saw Slayer as a sub genre of even thrash where their "evil" gimmick was more akin to Rob Zombies satanic cowboy gimmick than to the "youth-thrash" from which Metallica and Megadeth came from.

So yeah, I think Slayer suck. But I also think The Doors and the Grateful Dead sucked too but some fans treat them as gods.

In a previous post you diss the drummer too. I like all kinds of drumming not just Thrash just as I like all kinds of music. Anyway, I answered your question by explaining their popularity. Your welcome.

Virtuosity isn't necessary to sell a shit-ton of records, you just need to write and record good songs. Slayer has done that in spades and they're nothing if not consistent. Whereas Metallica saw a steep decline in record/song quality after AJFA, Slayer has released one kick ass album after another for going on 40 years! It's weird, whenever I'm driving and I've got my flashdrive on shuffle, I often find myself skipping song after song but whenever I hit a slayer track I almost always listen to it. Whatever formula they've got, it's a good one.

Comparing Slayer to the Ramones is like comparing Beethoven to The Partridge Family.
