You do realize that we talk one way in mixed company and one way around each other, right? They even do that in the movie. He doesn't talk "hood" around the museum curator for example. |

Eh, it's okay. Nothing spectacular like all the paid reviewers online are saying. I'm a sexist misogynist because I didn't like Wonder Woman and now because I didn't really enjoy this I'm a racist too. I can't wait for Marvel to make a movie with a gay lead so I can be called a homophobe too and complete the trifecta of triggered people. |

I think the movie is very good though, but it achieves much of that by way of doing things not typically seen in major action movies / super hero movies. The media has made a big deal of the whole 'primarily black cast' and pro diversity elements. Many Starwars fans felt like the Last Jedi film did diversity for the sake of diversity. That criticism does not apply for this film because it genuinely makes sense in context. So setting aside the casting, the story of the film does a few other unusual things. Almost none of the important characters are American. Villain grew up in the US, and a supporting character is a CIA agent. And that is it. Every other important character is Wakandan. Nothing important to the story happens in the USA either. All the action scenes happen in either in Africa or South Korea. Outside of Bond movies, usually a threat to the entire world always ends up telling a story set either in Los Angeles or New York. Or its about Americans doing shit for Americans while in some foreign location. For the purpose of the story, America is just not that important. The novelty of that is refreshing. A big part of the story is about deciding if Wakanda should remain isolationist or not. Should Wakanda let the rest of africa persist in misery or would trying to intervene just create problems for Wakanda to no benefit? Unlike framing this question for the USA, the world at large has no idea about what Wakanda is capable of and no expectation of them doing anything. Less specific to this movie is the way that the Villains goals and motivations are generally more sympathetic then it would otherwise be. And ther are plenty of good moments in the film. My only real complaint remains that they main character did not stand out as much as I would have liked. They either needed to give him more effective moments of being badass / awesome, or they needed to give him more humor based moments. It is not that they outright botched the way they handled him, but they did not do anything awesome with him either. END COMMUNICATION |
