Saw it twice. Wasn't so impressed last night, but I loved it after a second viewing tonight.

The subliminal implants always work on the second viewing. Beware. Be.......ware.

pros:
well paced
proper gore (not over done)
interesting plot twists

cons:
fucking women ruin everything as always
hey since we're on the strange planet we don't know anything about let me and this other guy wander off alone, what could happen
well shit those people died from some monster attacking them
hey you care if i wander off alone now?
sure
hey they've been gone a while
let me go check it out alone
well shit they've been gone a while
why don't i go off alone
are those monster pods?
better stick my face on one
well shit that didn't work

predictable ending

I'll be seeing it tomorrow night. Unfortunately, I heard similar complaints as Nate mentioned about contrivances to get characters in danger, and the characters acting like your typical naive horror movie fodder.

After hearing what other Alien fans said about this I'll pass. When I heard that the crew is dumber than in Prometheus and the explanation I was given as to show how. I said fuck this movie. Not only that I hear that unless you watch all the YouTube videos before hand, you won't even know who most of the characters are.

The movie was good
There was just about twenty minutes of forced stupidity
Take about the first 45 minutes and the last 20 and it was well done
It is interesting

I came really close to walking out several times, but there was this old man in my row and I didn't want to disturb him.

Saw it last night.

Eh.

I wish you could take the aptitude that the producers behind Prometheus and Covenant have for movie-making and apply it to better films. Like Prometheus, Covenant is wonderfully-made, and the acting is good (Fassbender is top notch), but it's wasted on a silly, fluff plot. We've had two movies in this prequel series, now, which are intended to give us background on why the Xenomorphs exist, and yet all we have are more questions at this point than answers. It's infuriating. And the answers we have gotten so far aren't providing a very compelling backstory.

To be perfectly honest, its unnecessary. At no point while watching Alien or Aliens was I thinking "Jeez, I really wish I knew where these alien creatures came from". World building wasn't important in those films; the raw tension, terror, and atmosphere was what made them so great. If anything, the mystery only made them more engrossing. Sometimes, the monster is scarier when it's not right in front of you, or when you don't have all of the answers.

I'm also going to echo nate's remarks about the crew in this flick being unimaginably incompetent. The movie really stretches your disbelief to put this cast in danger.

On top of a certain flute scene that's going to become wildly infamous, soon enough.

On top of some inconsistencies with later films in the timeline.

Cripes, what a frustrating movie. Better than Prometheus, but I hated Prometheus so this isn't much of a compliment.

Mondo, I agree about the space bugs. Nobody wondered why, hell they were space bugs....out in space...aliens....no further explanation needed. Yes the original giant astronaut bones with the hole in the ribs was interesting but easily explained as there are others out there--which was an easy explanation to accept given that its a sci fi flick set in the future. Again, not sure any of this needed prequels to explain. Just reboot after Aliens and do it better than 3 and 4.

Going to try and see this tonight.

So saw it and I'm honestly thought it was bad. Only 2-3 suspense-y parts, very predictable plot elements, fucking stupid crew and can we stop fucking around with the life cycle of the Xenomorphs already? Why do they insist on changing their incubation time sooo much along with growth after??

The problem I have with the mountain of criticism this film is getting is that it posits that the Alien series is somehow an elevated art form. I'm a casual fan of the series, but let's be honest - they're all just big budget genre films that manage to entertain to varying degrees of success. Covenant has aliens, blood and carnage. Good enough for me - we're not reinventing the wheel here.

Honestly I'd have to sit down and re-watch Alien and Aliens as I haven't watched them in their entirety in years. I just don't remember thinking the crew was just so fucking bumbling retarded and at the time obviously it was new so the plot points weren't obvious.

The crew weren't bumbling idiots. It's part of what made the movies so good. They were doing what they were supposed to and the Alien was still wrecking their shit. I haven't seen the movie but the crew apparently lands on a uncharted world and don't put on their suits. That's fucking brain dead levels of stupid.

Alien and aliens were excellent. No ridiculously bad character actions. Nobody laying on the floor waiting to die. It went like it should mostly. Even alien three was passable. These people were ducking retarded
