I'm guessing this was covered at the old forum but enough time has passed and newer members are aboard so it's worth revisiting.

For me it's public speaking. Why? I don't know. I guess it boils down to the possibility of making an ass of yourself in front of a group of people. Yet I come here and do it all the time in writing.

Yeah it's irrational, as most fears are. But I overcome it with use of beta blockers, which prevent my heart from racing. I still get the anticipatory anxiety before giving a presentation but at least I'm not a complete mess due to the drugs, which I only have to pop occasionally, not daily.

It's better than spending months or years in cognitive therapy or at a Toastmasters group.

The other things on the list above don't bother me. All right, death could scare me depending on the method, but I don't go around worried about how much or little time I have left.

My wife or kids being hurt. Period. Nothing terrifies me more or fucks with my head in a rare moment of silence more than random thoughts of them being in danger.

This.

I dont have a ton of irrational fears. I mean, obviously if I'm going up the stairs in a high rise all alone and the lights go out and I hear groaning - I'll be frightened.

But the thing that scares me most about the zombie apocalypse is protecting my son and my wife.

Is your family being hurt even really a fear? I mean, that's like saying your biggest fear is having your eyeballs stabbed out. I think when it's something that nobody wants to happen across the board it falls under common sense more than fear.

For me, I'm not afraid of a lot of things that many people are. Public speaking is nothing to me, I used to do stand-up and various other speaking engagements. Violence isn't frightening to me, I've spent much of my life kickboxing. Not really afraid of death, poverty (I've been POOR before), bunch of other things.

I am deathly afraid of dentists. I haven't been to one in an embarrassingly long amount of time, and I'm going to one next month to get my teeth sorted out. I have a bunch of anxiety that all my teeth are gonna get yanked out, I actually have nightmares about it frequently. Pretty sad for a grown man, but I don't really know how to deal with it mentally. Even typing this post and thinking about it makes me sad.

I'm also really afraid of heights. Despite being a tall guy, even being a few feet up on a ladder causes me to become disoriented. We live on the 5th floor and being out on the balcony causes me all kinds of issues. Oddly enough, roller coasters have never been an issue for me.

I think it is. I see your point, but it's an active fear that I actually am affected by. I don't have occasional moments when I'm suddenly and inexplicably overcome with a horrible sense of dread that I might have my eyeballs stabbed out. That does however happen when it comes to my family being hurt. It doesn't consume any major part of my life, but it does happen now and again. It's the only thing I can try to imagine that scares me. I can imagine my eyes getting stabbed, and it doesn't make me feel scared. When my wife is out with a friend and I'm not around, I have to make an effort to not think about something happening to her while I'm not around. Same with my kids. Same if she's getting a ride to work on snowy roads. I'm a nervous wreck the whole time.

I think its more the fear of being helpless when they're in trouble or harm is coming their way.

I'm sure lots of people fear for this kind of stuff too, so I get Ash's point.

Outside of family - i don't have an irrational fear about anything, really.

I am scared shitless of heights and anything that requires me to hope I don't die. This includes Roller Coasters, skydiving, bungie jumping, going more than 2 steps up a ladder without a wall next to me.

I'm actually pretty scared by bees, wasps, and anything that stings. Snakes and spiders don't bother me as long as I'm prepared for it. I'll hold a tarantula or python, but if I stumble on a simple garden snake I'd probably shit myself.

Those are things I'm afraid of, but I don't fear them. I'm not afraid I'll run into some bees, but I'm afraid if I do. I just do my best to avoid them. I did go through a six month stint when I was a young boy when I had a real fear of tornados. I think I was in like 2nd grade. The tornado sirens went off in our little town and we had to do our tonrado drill in the halls at my catholic school. All the nuns had us saying prayers while we were cowering in the halls. It was terrifying. Afterwards I wouldn't go outside on sunny days because I was afraid a tornado would come out of nowhere. It was really strange to feel that way. Lasted a few months and then I kind of flipped it by just getting really interested in storms and weather and dove into reading as much as i could until my fear dissolved.

This is a logical fear though
Just thought I'd add that bull sharks swim in fresh water too
