Buffalo is all over the news for getting hammered with six feet of snow in some areas!!!
Jeff Mondo, how bad are things in your neighborhood?

- Quote:
-
Blistering cold air blasted across most of the country Tuesday, and a lake-effect snowstorm hammered the Great Lakes and parts of New York, hitting some places with more than 6 feet of snow — so much that the National Guard was activated around Buffalo. More than 100 miles of the New York State Thruway were closed, trapping a college basketball team on its bus more than 24 hours and counting.
The National Weather Service said Tuesday night that some areas of the Buffalo suburbs were approaching 76 inches of snow since Monday — that's the record for snowfall over a 24-hour period anywhere in the U.S. ever.
"This is a very intense storm, one of those record storms that we are going to remember for a few years beyond this date," Buffalo Public Works Commissioner Steven Stepniak said.
High temperatures struggled to climb above freezing in much of the Northeast, and they didn't even come close across most of the Midwest. Wind chills made it feel close to zero or colder in parts of Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
And there's no sign of a reprieve from the cold brought to the country by what meteorologists call an Omega block — cold that has been blamed for at least 19 deaths in traffic accidents on icy roads since Saturday, at least three deaths from weather-related heart attacks in Upstate New York and the death of a 16-year-old boy from exposure in Nebraska.
More than 100 cities could break records Tuesday night and Wednesday for the lowest daily high or low temperature for this time of year, The Weather Channel reported. That includes the Plains, the Midwest, the Deep South and the Northeast.
At 34 degrees, Anchorage, Alaska, was expected to be 12 degrees warmer Wednesday morning than Tallahassee, Florida.

This is wild hahaha
I live more in what you would consider "South" Buffalo, which means my neck of the woods was right in the middle of that cataclysmic snow band. Currently sitting with 5 feet of snow outside my house, and there's potentially another foot or two on the way before Friday. We have only half of my driveway cleared, but it's really only to let our car batteries run a bit because my street is absolutely buried. At least 5 feet sitting on there, and that's the case with most major roads in the area. Plows haven't gone out yet because there's still stranded motorists on most routes.
Couldn't get to work yesterday, and there's no way I'm going in today. Doubt I will tomorrow morning, either. I don't expect to leave my property until Friday at the latest, but that's certainly no guarantee. I hope I can, going three days without making money sucks and I'm supposed to do coverage of the Sabres game in the press box that night.
I'll have pictures up eventually. Right now my family is safe and secure; we got heat, electricity, water, and enough food to manage a couple more days. It means a lot of video games for me the rest of this week haha.
Only problem.
I'm running low on booze...

You're a reporter who covers Sabres games? Glad to hear you're still kicking! I write for a website called Sabres Hockey Central. We're technically just a fansite, but we have such a large following that the Sabres organization gave us a press credential about three years back, so any of our writers can attend home games in the press box, go to press conferences, get into the locker room etc.
And yes, I'm alive here haha. It's going to be a boring couple of days, but I think we'll be okay. Gotta say, though, this is one of the worst snow storms I've ever seen. Easily top 3 in my lifetime. We're just...trapped.

So Jeff - let's say the forecast takes a turn for the worse and this type of snow happens all of next week and the week after.
Is it even possible to go out somewhere to get food/water/etc? I mean, are places even open?

We don't see you in the NHL thread very often. I'll assume there are two reasons for that:
1) You already write about Sabres hockey for a living so the last thing you want to do is come here and write more about the team.
2) It's the Sabres, and they genuinely suck again this season!
Well, I'm an Oilers fan and they have sucked for a long time too. At least you guys got that big win over the Leafs!

Depends on where you are. It's almost unbelievable the disparity in snowfall across the city; if you were north of the snow band, you've gotten a few inches of snow, a foot at worse, but if you were south of it, you're looking at several feet. Downtown Buffalo and the northtowns are relatively fine, although they may be hit if this second wave actually does come.
The south towns, obviously, are buried. There are some stores open, such as gas stations and supermarkets, however from what I understand it's not widespread, and it's on a case-by-case basis if their proprietors want to keep them open. The big issue is that most of the major roads aren't plowed and are currently sitting with a few feet of snow on them. There's driving bans is just about every last town, and from what I understand, the authorities are enforcing these very strictly. If you're caught driving in one of these areas without some kind of authorization, you're getting arrested. They need to keep people off of the roads so they can get stranded motorists out, and then so the plows and the national guard can do their working clearing them.
As you might expect, this can be pretty dire for some people. I regret to say that 5 people are already reported dead, and I anticipate that number to increase as the days go on. The news and our politicians are encouraging people to call 911 if they feel they're in danger, but it's a whole other story for rescue workers to actually get to those homes.
One of the biggest dangers right now is gas emissions being blocked on homes. With how much snow fell, it's barricading the tubes where carbon monoxide, among other gases, flow out your house from your furnace, gas dryer etc. If you don't free up those tubes, and you use those gas appliances, it's going to back up and fill your house. I have to imagine that a lot of young home owners probably were not aware of this prior to the widespread warnings. Meanwhile, if you can't get to those sections of your property where your gas emissions flow, you simply have to turn off your heat, which means you sit there in the cold for however long. This is being reported as a big issue for the elderly.
Best case scenario, you were hopefully prepared and had supplies stocked in your home. Not all are so lucky, unfortunately.

It's also laziness. I really need to become more involved here, I don't know why I post so irregularly.

How ghetto is southern Buffalo? Not saying where you live specifically - but do that have "projects" where a snow like this - if it lasted - would completely wipe people out?

It was really cold this morning when I walked to my car. I almost put on a hoodie but decided not to. Took until almost 8:30 to warm up and get sunny outside.

That sucks a ton. How ghetto is southern Buffalo? Not saying where you live specifically - but do that have "projects" where a snow like this - if it lasted - would completely wipe people out? While there's small pockets of poverty even in the better-off towns, the worst are more northern, closer to downtown, which escaped relatively unscathed (so far). But yes, if they had gotten the kind of snowfall that the 'burbs received, it'd be crippling. We saw some of that during the infamous October Storm of 2006.
Me and my brother took a mile hike to the nearest gas station today, since one of the main roads nearby was cleared up. If I remember correctly, our list of purchased products included -
2 Digiorno pizzas 2 jumbo sticks of beef jerky A jumbo can of Monster Zero Ultra A can of ravioli A jumbo cup of beef-flavored ramen soup 2 cans of tuna A can of chicken noodle soup A 15-case of Miller Lite
So, yeah. We're good for a few days.

Ha, that's quite the shopping list!
I'm just outside Toronto, and we got a pretty big storm (for this early in the season), obviously nothing near what you guys got. Took me twice as long to get home from work, just grateful I'm not dealing with what you guys got. Best of luck!
Oh...and figure out a way to get Ralph Wilson Stadium cleared for Sunday, will ya!
