Here's a recent article from Slate on that very topic: The Gulf That Divides Us The Whiteness Project underscores why there is so little empathy between whites and blacks. The interviews for the Whiteness Project—a new series from PBS and documentary filmmaker Whitney Dow—are varied, succinct, and candid. “Because slavery happened, does that mean we owe black people something?” asks one participant, who continues with other, similar observations. “I think it's hard to talk about race as a white person because, maybe, black people are just looking for a reason to tell you why you're wrong, or tell you why you owe them something,” he said. “I just don't buy into that nonsense about discrimination,” says a doctor. He insists: “If you have it upstairs, and you really commit to doing what you want to do with your life, I don't think race has anything to do with anything.” These interviews are just the first part in a larger series, and already, they’re valuable. It’s rare that white Americans talk about race. It’s even rarer that they do so on camera. And it’s rarer still that they reveal ignorance, confess to prejudices, and share their fears. With that said, watching the interviews is jarring. In general, you don't expect anyone to openly say he or she is “proud to be white” or warn that “a lot of white boys aren't going to be pushed around.” But although these interviews are often unpleasant, they’re also useful, since they illustrate the extent to which blacks and whites really do inhabit vastly different worlds. Take social circles and relationships. According to a recent survey from the Public Religion Research Institute, 75 percent of white Americans have entirely white social networks “without any minority presence.” Per the interviews, it’s not just that people are unfamiliar with race, it’s that—in all likelihood—they don’t know many minorities, which leads to myths and misconceptions about their behavior and status. You see this in various survey data. Median income among black Americans is roughly half that of white Americans. But a narrow majority of whites believe blacks earn as much money as whites, and just 37 percent believe that there’s a disparity between the two groups. Likewise, while 56 percent of blacks believe black Americans face significant discrimination—as evidenced by recent statistics on police shooting—only 16 percent of whites agree. The most striking result is the degree to which many whites—including many millennials—believe discrimination against whites is more prevalent than discrimination against blacks. I've written a lot about the black/white divide on a variety of issues, from the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, to differing views of government and the social safety net. Not only does this data underscore the vast gap in perception, but it suggests a solution—blacks and whites (and Latinos and Asians and others) need to share the same space if we’re going to have any empathy or understanding. But life isn't an ABC after-school special, and fixing the problem of segregation isn't as easy as a plea to get along. Yes, the United States is more integrated than it’s ever been, but it’s still incredibly segregated with huge barriers to further progress, from exclusionary zoning and housing discrimination to concentrated poverty and hiring bias, and broader trends of resegregation in school systems and neighborhoods across the country. Sadly, at the same time we need to push harder for an integrated society, we have a mainstream political movement devoted to gutting our key tools for fighting bias, and indulging many white Americans in their misguided belief that we live in a racially equal society. http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2014/10/the_whiteness_project_whites_and_blacks_are_still_living_in_separate_worlds.html?wpisrc=obnetwork |

Should note that it's actually the Repubs who came up with the term Obamacare in order to be able to trash the law and the Pres simultaneously. Just turned out to be catchier than Affordable Care Act, which is the actual name. Obama had enough confidence in the law, despite repubs ability to weaken it from it's original state, to run with the name in the Press. Too bad all the Dems were too fuckin' dumb to get behind a good thing. |

The GOP has no problem with the term Obamacare when they use it in the pejorative, e.g. "Look at all the problems with people attempting to register through the Obamacare website." The website was such an unfortunate part of all of this. But the Republicans do not want to associate any positive facets of affordable health care with Obama, of course. |

Well just wait and see what they pass and/or cut from it I can tell you our organization is preparing for reduced reimbursement. Less equipment, jobs cut (even management, we're dropping some medical directors), reduced services, not giving people shampoo, toothpaste, etc... while they're here. This is in response to having a legal team read the bill and projecting a budget in response. |

Gentile whites are the most naive people in the world. Blacks don't own media. They don't own the banks, they don't own the corporations, they don't own the universities/board of directorships, blacks are not making a new hillbilly redneck program for tv almost every month... So who is, for several decades now, encouraging the despising of caucasian peoples as bad people? Gasp! Could it be caucasians! But here's the rub... What is never acknowledged is that caucasians have their own class system going on. Who is the group that owns hollywood, media, the banks?.. We know or suspect who - but we've been trained to not connect the dots. This group has had their hate campaign so shrewdly and successfully camoflaged it's incredible. I'll let you name them... To say it out loud too much you could be in much more trouble than any racist remark you can make.... LOL, the 'whiteness project' - not too pejorative... would love to be able to follow the money to see who funded this...It hasn't aired yet but will there be any acknowledgment of the hatred against whites? Who is purporting the premise that whites are not allowed to have their own country, their own neighborhood, their own networks? Who is the source of this hateful propaganda? never any mention that in every white country, including the Scandinavian countries 'someone' is approving bringing in millions of non-whites to dilute the white population; I listen to an internet program coming from Scandinavia and trust me, it's not the citizens who want this flood of non-white mostly muslim peoples who have skyrocketed the rape statistics alone amongst other lovely stats. It is always about diluting the white population only..Who are they that is allowing/enforcing this? it is a global effort to demean, disempower, disenfranchise, rob ordinary caucasian peoples- and global means well organized. This tv series is the academic/intellectual counter companion to all the demeaning hillbilly programs the same money is sponsoring. They're handling the less educated one way and the more educated another... When these powers that be get finished devaluing or replacing the dollar and we are all 2/3 more poor than the present moment and the 'oppressed' folk feel justified to kick in your door because you are one of the bad white people, maybe then for an instant, that white person/s will feel in stark traumatic fashion how innocent they really are ....obviously it will be too late then. |
