So I think some weird mail fraud is going on. About a week ago I got one letter addressed to "Shaquita Payne". It's only my wife and and I and neither of us are named "Shaquita Payne". The address is correct, but there is no one who lives in my house by that name (nor has there ever been). I didn't think much of it and I think I just threw it away. The next day there were ten letters addressed to Shaquita. At this point I thought it was pretty fucking weird, and I opened them. Turns out they were all from credit cards, saying that they couldn't issue a credit card at this time to poor Shaquita. Since then, there is letter every day usually 6-10 of them, all addressed to Shaquita, all from credit card companies. In addition to Shaquita's mail, I am getting letters from the Florida State Dept of Benefits for Eric Cantu. It's getting pretty fucking annoying at this point. Then today, I get 5 packages in the mail, all addressed to Alice Hamm. I opened one to try to figure out what the fuck is going on, and it's cheap, shitty CZ jewelry. The address is correct on all the mail, but the names are of people who have never lived here. I have no clue what the hell is happening. It's obvious, some sort of mail fraud is going on, although to what end, I can't imagine. How does applying for credit cards with my address benefit someone? Wouldn't the cards just come to my house and then you wouldn't have access to them? Any the jewelry? WTF? How does ordering jewelry to my house help a thief or scammer? I called my credit card company and they said they haven't had any new applications under my name or SS#. There also wasn't any fraudulent charges on my credit card. I called Experian and Equifax and put a 90 fraud alert were they will moniter my account and make sure something doesn't go down (although I'm not holding my breath on that one). So, what the hell? Anyone have any experience with this? What the heck is going on? |

Sort of. They have a website where you can report this stuff, but nothing I know falls under the right category. You can file a complaint for "theft" or "fraud" I tried theft and they have you fill out a thing about what was stolen and who you think stole it. Doesn't really apply here. I tried fraud and it says, so who is sending you fraudulent mail? What are the names of the companies? Doesn't really apply here either. I can't figure it out. |

I'd be careful, I don't know what type of dwelling you live in, but keep an eye out for the person arranging all this to come swipe your/their mail. That's not an uncommon thing to happen when someone's ordering stuff with a stolen CC (or whatever). Order merchandise to someone's home, swipe mail before they get to it. Been happening for a long time now. But yeah, maybe open the packages you get and see if there're any statements of any kind and then work from there to get to the bottom of it. |

Thanks Ash. So far, no statements. I only opened one of the shitty CZ jewelry packages, but I could tell from the others that it was more of the same. Once I opened it, there was just the jewelry, no receipt or anything. Another thing, all the merch seems to have come from a site called tophatter.com, which looks like a fake eBay or something. I wrote a letter to my mail carrier and put it in my mailbox saying "Don't deliver mail here that isn't address to ****** ***** or ***** ****** (my wife and I's respective names). Also, I wrote "RETURN TO SENDER: NO SUCH PERSON AT THIS ADDRESS" and stuck it in my mailbox. Should I not do that? Should I take it to the post office instead? I don;t want this shit in my house. I don't even know what it is. Edited by Skeletonrock, Oct 21 2014, 11:18 PM.

I'd perhaps contact that site, preferably by phone if possible. Let them know about the merchandise you received and the person it's addressed to. Perhaps that person is the victim of fraud? Sites like that come and go frequently since there's some sort of gimmick to them (pyramid scheme maybe, I can't remember), so you be weary of that as well. |

I'd avoid the whole thing and keep throwing away mail. You've contacted the agencies. Call the post office and inform them and enjoy the jewelry. Also...a big problem in CA is with drugs. People send mail to an address and see if it sits in an attempt to mail drugs. |

I would advise going to your local Post Office in person. Ask to speak with post-master. He will advise you and get a postal inspector involved. |

My best guess: Either someone is committing identity fraud on a person named Shaquita Payne, or someone created a fake credit card account under the name Shaquita Payne. Either way, they used your address to create the billing address for fake accounts. I would notify the post office, the police, and the companies appearing on the bills. END COMMUNICATION |

Likely could be this. And they ordered some miscellaneous crap right off the bat with no intention of receiving it just to test that the stolen info they got is working, or to get their account in good standing on the website. Anyway OP, I tried to look for stuff about TopHatter with a bunch of different search terms about fraud and receiving other peoples packages and didn't see much at all. Any fraud stuff I saw just seems to be standard buyer/seller relations which wouldn't be any kind of scam that targets someone not on the site. |
