I dig the documentary section. They just added "unbelievers" with Richard Dawkins and Lawrence Krauss. Worth a look. Super High Me is a fun watch as well, even for non smokers. |

Speaking of documentaries, looking for some good ones. Would love to find some that are actually creepy and scary. Nothing fake though. |

Besides those already mentioned... I don't watch a lot in the genre, except when there is a good mystery involved. Some recent one's I can think of though: Madness In the Fast Lane: TV doc about two Swedish twin sisters who show up in Britain and both jump in front of highway traffic. It gets stranger from there. It's a interesting tale of strange and severe mental disorder. You can probably watch the intro in the first two minutes to determine appeal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-bIWm08eJc&feature=youtu.be From One Second to The Next: 30 min Werner Herzog doc on texting while driving, and a look at how it has significantly changes the lives of a few offenders and victims. It's sad, haunting style, and scary in the sense of imagining the consequences of a common activity. Personally I think it should be shown in driver's ed class. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xk1vCqfYpos Fatal Insomnia: TV doc about a rare disease called Familial Fatal Insomnia, which is exactly like it sounds. The disease is only known to affect 30 families around the world, had no cure, and is passed down randomly through genetics. This one was particularly creepy to me for a couple reasons. First is the conditions of the disease. One point around middle age, it just strikes and the person stops sleeping entirely at which point they soon enter a severe state of hallucination and mental decay and eventually die like a month or so later. The real footage of some of the patients looks like a horror film, and it gets you thinking about just how vital sleep is to survival and how strange of a process it is. It's impossible to induce, and without it you die. Also, the doc explores the decision of one of the people in a family tree that carries the disease, about whether to get tested for the gene and whether or not to have children. It opens up all kinds of moral questions about whether or not you want to find out if you are likely to suddenly die in your middle age, how that could affect your life, and whether you want to have children if you have the disease or if there is a possibility they could have it too. http://vimeo.com/38652591 Zoo: Sundance featured doc about an incident with a man who died from having sex with a horse, and more broadly explores bestiality and the culture about it. Nothing scary here, but it's a little unsettling and taboo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzaD97OslAs I'm guessing you've seen or heard of The Imposter: Good mystery there and a little unsettling at times. And finally, a second vote for The Act of Killing that has been mentioned already and was my favorite doc of last year. Personally, I didn't find it scary or even too creepy. I saw the exploration of this widespread genocide as more of a look into the cultural and political landscape. However, there are plenty of unsettling scenes, and there is a real absurdity to the film because of how it's a film about making a film about the subject, and you have strange things like one of the warlords who just inexplicably dresses in drag. Oh wait... one more. Into Eternity: film about a nuclear waste disposal site that is supposed to last 100,000 years, and exploration of how to make it a place that humans will stay away from. It's not overtly scary or creepy, but does have a really dark and captivating style. It's not about the construction really, but about how you can make something that hypothetically intelligent creatures will stay away from in 100,000 years, when they are likely to be completely different than modern humans. It presents all kinds of questions about whether you mark the site "dangerous" and hope people will stay away, or don't mark it at all because curiosity will always trump warnings. Stuff like that. Not personal recommendations, but you can look below for a bunch of others. I've had the link bookmarked for awhile and go back to it when I'm in a mood for that type of doc. You can probably find some stuff more creepy there than the list above, but I haven't watched most of them because a lot of that doesn't appeal to me. http://www.reddit.com/r/Documentaries/comments/25kylx/request_most_scarycreepy_andor_unsettling/ Edited by jmose86, Oct 6 2014, 04:31 PM.

As for OP's question: I don't have Netflix, but two indie films I really enjoyed from last year that might be on there are: Pig: man wakes up in the desert with no memory, and sets off to find out who he is and how he got there. Great mystery with an thought provoking ending. About Time: Film about a young guy who can go back in time. It's a romantic comedy on the surface, but it's really a heartwarming film and has a lot of funny moments. |

Those docs you mentioned sound really good, all of them. I'm gonna start checking them out. A side question, are you into those shows that profile murders and mysteries like Dateline, 48 Hours, Cold Case Files, etc? |

I think we've talked about this before (maybe not you and me specifically). I enjoy any episode with a good mystery or devious plot that's outside of the norm. But I don't care much for the ones where the perp is just a monster. I don't watch them regularly unless I catch it on TV or hear about a good upcoming episode about a popular news story. |

I just watched this though the same. It's very much like groundhog day in how the time traveling is used to try and perfect life. I wont give anything away incase others want to watch but I really enjoyed it. Got the most laughs from the dad and uncle. |
