I saw the article below the other day and meant to drop it here for discussion. Delta gets the best ratings, United is the worst again. My wife and I have flown Delta several times, never had any problems. We've only flown twice with United but one of those two times the flight was delayed and it caused problems with our connections later. It prolonged our travel by several hours. We've also flown Continental a few times. It was okay. Best flight we were ever on was British Airways when we went to Europe last year. Amazing service and the free upgrade to first class sure did help! We were just randomly selected because there were seats still available. It was awesome. Incredibly comfortable with lots of leg room, tasty free snacks, amazing set of headphones to use during the flight and a good entertainment system. I would never pay for first class but I sure as hell enjoyed it. Up here we have two airlines: Air Canada and WestJet, which was a regional airline that has grown into a national competitor. Westjet has the much better reputation. Air Canada is notorious for losing luggage, overbooking and being late. Here's the story: Delta tops the list of the best airlines in the U.S. Not every American airline is created equal. A new study shows that United ranks as the overall worst performing airline in the U.S. for the third year in a row, but Delta is top of the list when it comes to such metrics as fewest cancelled flights, most on-time arrivals and the least number of mishandled bags. The report, compiled by Airfarewatchdog, a website that provides data about the airline industry for consumers, gathered its figures from the Department of Transportation’s May 2014 study on the industry. “As far as we’re concerned, Delta is this year’s unsung hero,” Airfarewatchdog said in a post announcing the results. “For the past two years, Delta has been stuck on the wrong side of the rankings, but this year the airline moved from sixth up to the top spot!” The number two spot, meanwhile, belongs to Virgin America, which maintained its runner-up position from 2013. Delta shot up the rankings from last year’s study on the heels of a strong performance in a number of categories. For example, the airline saw only 0.11% of its flights cancelled to finish as the best in the U.S. in that category, compared with JetBlue’s 2.42% cancellations. Delta also scored a particularly strong showing in the on-time arrival department, with 84.41% of its flights landing when expected (the second best after Alaska’s 89.67%). In the case of fewest mishandled bags, Virgin America was best in show, with just 1.04 mishandled out of 1,000 passengers. The worst performer? AirTran, which had 4.91 mishandled, on average. For amount of denied boardings per one million passengers, according to statistics compiled by the Department of Transportation, JetBlue had just 3.58 denied to claim the number-one position, whereas United was last with 245.61 denied entry on the plane. The final category, customer satisfaction scores, featured JetBlue as the highest performer with a score of 79, according to the 2014 American Customer Satisfaction Index scores. United finished number eight in the category with a mark of 60. http://fortune.com/2014/08/08/delta-tops-the-list-of-the-best-airlines-in-the-u-s/ |

I'm usually all about southwest I've never even been delayed flying southwest and always got the cheapest ticket. Business class on the flight to Japan was nice though. Can't get that on southwest |

Those rankings are often "bought out". I can't remember when - but I remember dismissing all credibility of the ratings because it was found some airline was paying off the website. Pretty much all airlines are shit. They operate in a way where they don't have to do anything because all of the airlines behave the same. So they can do maddening things like charge $900 for a ticket they sold for $260 the day before. |

I've had absolutely shocking service with Delta to and from the UK and Holland every single time I've flown with them bar one connecting flight, they consistently fuck up leading to me missing my connection. Last time I flew with United and their planes were so out of date it was ridiculous. Virgin are the best I've flown with, always had amazing service with them. |

This is US based only PL. If we're going outside the US - Quantas has pretty much everyone beat. |

I don't think there's such a thing as a best American airline, just slightly less crap than the others. |

Emirates is probably the best, I know ratings go up and down all the time but they are pretty damn consistent and one of the most desired airlines to work for. Also, surprisingly Malaysia Airlines is actually quite good. |

Just thought you'd slip that one in there to see if anyone was actually reading? Malaysia Airlines only has a couple of recent minor blemishes on its record, that's all! Even if their record was stellar outside of that, their reputation is taking a shit-kicking. |

I've never had good experiences flying, not once. I'm not a huge traveler, I haven't been on a plane in years at this point, but something I always thought would be really cool when I was a kid I learned was both boring a tedious. I think part of the problem is I've always traveled alone. Not once have I been on a plane with someone I knew, so I'm always sitting beside strangers who are never especially interesting to talk or listen to. It might be kinda weird to some, but traveling for me has always been strange and isolated, and I kinda hate that aspect of it. I've been to cool places, seen interesting things, but always alone. |

Maybe someday we can get you on a flight sitting next to ol Cbear. The two of you can talk about sports entertainment and the time will fly by, pardon the pun. I've generally been pretty lucky. When my wife and I aren't travelling together, I don't strike up conversation with every seatmate but on the occasions when I have, there have been some pretty interesting and friendly folks I've met. Once in a while you'll get stuck next to some yahoo who wants to talk about himself from takeoff until landing. For the most part, I just hope I don't get stuck near a screaming baby. Talk about something that makes for a long flight. |

West jet and Air Canada can suck it. 13 hour flight home from Chile on a WestJet flight... TERRIBLE! Actually I really don't have enough experience to make a valid opinion. 13 hours would be a long flight an any airline. |

Air Canada's pilots, who obviously enjoy playing with their joysticks, try to help give their airline a higher profile. There is no bad publicity. Well, sure there's the Malaysian Airlines incidents. That's pretty bad. But this is rather amusing... Air Canada pilots left pornographic materials in airplane cockpits Air Canada management has had to repeatedly warn pilots not to leave lewd material in the cockpits of their airplanes. According to an internal bulletin obtained by CBC News, the issue kept cropping up on Air Canada’s fleet of Embraer planes, which mostly fly to Las Vegas. “I am disappointed to have to raise this issue once again but we unfortunately have some people that have yet to understand the message,” Air Canada director of fleet operations Rod Graham wrote to staff Sept. 3, 2013. The message was apparently prompted by an embarrassing incident involving officials from Transport Canada officials, who regulate the airline industry. “On a recent flight with Transport Canada in the jump seat, inappropriate material was once again discovered,” wrote Graham, referring to the extra seat in the cockpit behind the pilot and co-pilot. “In conjunction with Corporate Security we will work to identify those placing this material in the flight decks. Once they are identified they will be subject to discipline to the fullest extent of the law and our corporate policies. This could include termination and/or criminal charges.” It’s not clear if anyone was singled out for punishment over the inappropriate cockpit materials. An Air Canada spokesperson told Postmedia News the company was limited in how much information it could provide due to labour arbitration, but said its pilot training was updated to put an end to such incidents. “Air Canada has a strict zero tolerance policy to protect its employees against harassment of any kind, including inappropriate materials that may offend co-workers,” airline spokesperson Peter Fitzpatrick wrote in an emailed statement. “Air Canada took immediate corrective action to adapt its pilot training accordingly and regularly reminds employees that such materials are not tolerated in the workplace.” Fitzpatrick said the offensive materials “consisted almost entirely of inappropriate business cards” found mostly on the Embraer E-90s flights to Las Vegas. The most recent reported incident was in February of this year, Fitzpatrick said. Air Canada has previously faced complaints about pornographic materials left in the cockpits of airplanes, but it is not alone in this regard. In 2009, United Airlines settled a sexual harassment lawsuit with former pilot Lisa Stout who repeatedly found porn stashed away in cockpits on more than 20 domestic U.S. flights. Another American pilot was awarded $875,000 by a jury in a high-profile sexual harassment case against the now-defunct Continental Airlines back in the mid-1990s after complaining of porn left behind by male colleagues on numerous flights. http://o.canada.com/news/air-canada-inappropriate-materials-in-cockpit-0519211 |
