Who cares? No one goes there for titles anyway.

I'll be there - it should be fun :)

Sometimes cheaters get caught. Sometimes cheaters face consequences. That's the way it should be.

EDIT: I love the timing of this announcement. This Metamoris match involving Chael has been in the works for how long now, several weeks? NSAC waits until lots more tickets have been sold and now fans will be complaining when one of the headliners is potentially removed from the card.

In the fallout of Chael Sonnen's two recent drug test failures and his retirement from MMA, one of the notable side stories was his upcoming bout with Andre Galvao at Metamoris 4. Most notably, it was the fact that Ralek Gracie and the rest of the Metamoris organizers didn't seem to have any real problem putting a known steroid cheat on one of their cards, even immediately following his drug test failure. Well, if they didn't have a problem with it, it appears the NSAC may, as Jeremy Botter reported, via Twitter, that Sonnen is being threatened with fines as high as $250,000 per failed drug test, if he competes as planned at Metamoris 4.
Considering that one of the principal re-brandings that BJJ has gone under in the Metamoris organization is the listing of their athletes as "Fighters" and their bouts as a "Fight Card," that advertising may make Sonnen's case that he's "not fighting" a bit more difficult. However, grappling matches in general have not classically been considered sanctioned fights under NSAC jurisdiction, so the NSAC may have to try and set one heck of a precedent if they want to go after Sonnen here. Either way, while Ralek Gracie may not have had any problems with enlisting Sonnen's to help market his next fight card, problems seem to be following in Sonnen's wake. Stay tuned, as we'll be sure to keep you updated with more information as it becomes available.

I had a sneaking sucpicion that Sonnen was never going to be there anyway. I wouldnt be surprised if Sonnen is bailing on this and tossing this out there via his manager or agent so it doesn't look bad when he no-shows.

This entire article is based around a blogger saying that Sonnen is being threatened with fines - which basically means that someone is saying that to the blogger - which could very well be Sonnen himself (via proxy). News gets out, people are bummed ahead of time, Sonnen never shows for a fight he never intended to show for in the first place and says "You read the news! I could have been fined 1/4 million dollars!"

What's the motive though? Sonnen has never been one to back out of a fight he was sure to lose. Also, this is a payday for him, and something to shift the public discussion, which I'm sure is why he booked it right away in the first place.

There is no reason or evidence to suggest he never planned on competing.

Yea, well he fought Jones. :)

This is PR 101 by Chael. Do something immediately to shift attention (grappling match) and the outcome really doesn't matter. What matters is him being charming in interviews, and being humble in defeat; chipping away at public perception and getting the ball rolling on the process of getting his FOX/UFC gigs back.

I could see Chael backing out due to the fact that he's subject for random tests now and can't come in jacked.

No matter what...this grappling comp wasn't going to do much for him

Is he subject to testing, I was unaware.

That was part of the agreement with NSAC. Which was so fucking weird because he's retired supposedly.

You sure about that? I don't recall anything about future testing, and I checked 3 different articles just now that don't mention it. There's the thing about working with the commission to improve testing, but that's all I'm aware of.

During the hearing they told him that if he were to be involved he would be tested.

That's why I thought they were offering him a job.

In any case - no matter the issue - he's full of shit. He's not being threatened with fines and certainly not to that extent. He's ducking Galvao and never had any intention of grappling him in the first place
