The boy and I went last night with low expectations (I REALLY thought it would blow), but it was a fucking blast! We both walked out of there ready for a big ol' monster cage fight. Skull Island was tits!
Other than the corney weak jokes, I didn't see anything wrong with it. It was as good a kong movie could be.

Finally got to see this last night.

As a longtime giant monster fan, I had a blast. A slow start, but once the story gets to the epynomous island the pace picks up appropriately and never lets up. I really loved the touches of 70s culture splattered in there, between the music, and the many references to the Vietnam War. John C. Reilly's character was a pleasant surprise; I especially enjoyed his memories from his time period, and his fascination with the progress of modern society.

Kong himself looked incredible. Some of the best CGI I've ever seen in a movie. As always, I'm a big fan of the way that giant monster flicks can humanize their beasts. Kong wasn't just a wild, brainless animal. He thinks, he feels.

According to a friend, I was smiling like a idiot during the big monster brawl. This felt like a good old fashioned, pulpy adventure story. Great way to reboot Kong and bring him into the Monsterverse.

I really enjoyed it. The story is actually pretty decent for a kaiju movie. The CGI is top notch throughout especially on Kong. The final fight with that gnarly Mortal kombat style execution was awesome.

^ I still enjoy that film, but it definitely hasn't aged well. Both for the bloated running time and the excess CGI.

Much of Kong: Skull Island was filmed in the wilds of Vietnam, and its imagery benefits immensely from it.

Well said.

I remember leaving the theater from Jackson's Kong really impressed. But with a few more viewings over the years, the bloated running time & over saturated CGI kills it for me - it was no proper way to leave Kong off.. but THIS film, sheesh, proper new age spin on the most classic monster story of alltime!

SPOILERS but not really

It was nice to see a Kong story that where he both was taken seriously, and not killed off at the end. You look at the productions that have been done with him over the decades--two remakes, some ridiculous Japanese movies, a goofy cartoon, the abomination that is King Kong Lives--and the only quality, original story involving him before Skull Island was the novel Kong: King of Skull Island. Granted, that book was awesome and should be read by any giant monster fan, but there was so much unused potential out of the character all these years.

The MonsterVerse is quietly becoming the one of the better cinematic universes, after Marvel/Disney and Star Wars. Where others have either outright failed (Dark Universe) or got off to rocky starts because they didn't know how to properly build it (DCEU), the MonsterVerse has done everything right so far. 2014 Godzilla's would have been the exact same movie if it never lead to anything else, but it left opportunity for more stories to be told. Kong: Skull Island was the same; you didn't have to watch anything else to enjoy it, and even if you never watch another MonsterVerse movie after it, Skull Island doesn't lose any of its quality. Legendary/Warner are successfully building toward the bigger productions to come in the near future, like 2020's Godzilla vs. Kong.

2019's Godzilla: King of the Monsters has a terrific cast and a solid writer/director behind it. Bringing in Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah is going to be siiiiiick.

Watched this tonight after reading this thread and I really, really liked it! Kong hated those lizards with the almighty hatred of the unavenged! :) My only small criticism was that Samuel L. Jackson was too much Samuel L. Jackson.

So nice being on the friendly side of a monster film thread again after Alien: Covenant, ^_^

I absolutely love how this film devotes ample attention to the magic of Skull Island itself while still keeping Kong the main event. He stands for something in this, & is very admirable throughout. The CGI was stunning, but they left the thick of the jungle alone (enough) for it to really feel genuine & authentic. That is SO important! Soundtrack awesome of course.. Brie Larson is smoking hott! Yeah, I really can't say enough how much i liked this one.
