Home Sweet Home
|
The local necropolis stand southwest of town, on a shallow hill in the shadow of the mountain. Bordered by a thin stream and thick woods, as well as a useless wooden fence, the graveyard is only a thirty minute uphill walk from town, though only the highest buildings can see it from the main street. The air is always still and quiet, though it's cooler on the exposed ridge than elsewhere in town. Nothing grows here, even with effort. The graveyard holds currently about 200 bodies, with about a third as many visible headstones. Thin wooden crosses, crooked with age, stand beside loosely piled stones. They seem haphazard, bunched in places, spread in others, though the home of the dead could double their number with beds to spare. It's a nice place; unkempt, quiet, and empty. The sky feels bigger here. The only sounds are of the brook, the trees rustling, and sometimes, soft as a sigh, high-pitched pipes playing far away. In the middle of the hill, over-looking the main road, the most conspicuous and incongruous part of the the graveyard stand resolute, a slim slip of a girl in a dress. She is carved from a pale limestone, almost luminescent in the rough grass. One arm is raised in affection, fingers parted, reaching forward. Her hair is loose about her shoulders, rain carved rivulets parting her hair. Weather and time has worn away her features, and most of her name. The only thing left is a single date: 1873. |
