Nailer lounged in the shade, quite content. The air around him was warm enough to prevent him from getting chilly and the shade negated the odds of getting baked alive. It was a nice neutral place to be. He hadn't even known there was this much water in the desert. Admittedly, he hadn't thought about how he'd live when he'd accepted Kestrel's offer to stay. It was good to know he wouldn't die of dehydration. He wondered briefly where Kes was anyways and what she was up to. Though he was curious, he hadn't had the chance to tag along since she'd been gone when he'd woken up. Now the sun was setting and yeah maybe he was getting worried. The cat shifted, growing a bit less comfortable at the thought. AmethystClaw stalked silently across the desert sands, her discolored claws digging into the granuals as she unsheathed them with each step before they slipped away inside the empty slits of her toes flesh. She paused as her scent caught a small trace of feline. Curious. She hadn't ben aroudn this area much choosing to stick to the old camp for the past few years or so. The queen gave a small grunt before she continued on following the trace scent until seh caught sight of a fairly large tom. Tail waving behind her she crouched and watched him a moment eyes narrowed in suspicion before she stood tall and stalked over making no move to hide her footsteps now, purposefuly shifting the sands under her pads. "Never seen you in this desrt before." Banyan. By the time he had reached the oasis, for no reason other than he wanted to, especially not since his brother happened to be there and because he was stalking him, the sun was starting to set. When he did find his brother there, though, he wasn't alone. Wha? Who was that? Given, he didn't know any cat here other than Nail but still. His stomach fell and he glanced behind him, testing the pros and cons of just turning the other way. Naw, he could hear the other cat say something about the desert, which probably meant she was part of Whirling Winds, and he needed to get familiar with the locals if he ever wanted to fit in (not one of his strong suits). He gulped and stalked forward for a moment before quickly changing his posture to be as non-chalant as possible. Oh yes, he was quite comfortable here. "Hi!" he picked up his pace, positioning himself a few yards away from the stranger, then reconsidered a bit too late. She didn't look too friendly. Nailer frowned at the dry sound of rolling sand. His ear flicked abruptly in the direction of the sound and he was therefore saved from being startled. Still, he was suspicious of this she-cat. Kestrel had commented on how she hadn't seen anybody in the desert for years. If that was true, and Kestrel could have gained nothing from lying on that front, then where had this cat come from? He thought for a moment before replying, using the time to look at the older she-cat with critical silver eyes that glinted with a meanness that Nailer himself didn't know they had. "Could say the same of you." Sensing the tension, Marshland's heir got to his paws. He rose just in time to hear Banyan coming up. He gave his brother a cursory glance before returning all attention to the she-cat. AmethystClaw merely flicked an ear as she took in the glint of negative emotion in the tom's eyes. How strange... he somewhat resembled Marsh... if only in some small ways. The size was close at least. Planting her rump on the groudn she nonchalantly groomed her claws of sand and dirt keeping one eye on him as she did before she placed her paw down idly flexing the deadly hooks in and out of their sheathes. Her entire air said she felt no need for wariness around him. "I've lived here many years now kid. I'm one of the last to remain in that damn camp of Whirling Winds since Marshland left." Her tail tip would flick for a moment in her small irritation at the thought of the one tom she ever respected or listened too leaving like that. Bastard. See if she ever followed any tom's orders again. Banyan was actually quite content to go unnoticed, haveing sized up the she-cat. She was pretty intimidating, now the he got a close look at her, green eyes staring awkawrdly. "What was he like?" the fairly large tom piped in, his long, tufty ears twitching with interest as he forced himself still. He decided to take his chances and stay as her claws slid back. He'd never known their father, never really thought about him until Nailer went off, and even then he cared more about those he already knew, but now his ancestry had peaked the young tom's interest. Nailer blinked stupidly at the older she-cat. More Whirling Winds! More Marshland! Kestrel and Callow had made the Tribe out to be some great force of warrish glory but Nailer had privately figured they'd been exaggerating since they were member's kids and all. This cat claimed to actually be one of the tribe. "Oh man," he thought, "if Kes was here she'd be tail-over-toes about this!" He glanced at her paws as her wicked claws curled in and out. He wondered how many cats she'd killed with them. Before he could say a word, his brother spoke out. Personally, Nailer had taken enough Tribe stories from Kes but he supposed Banny had been so fortunate. Besides, Tribe stories were one thing and stories about Nail and Ban's dad were something else entirely. "If you're here, where's the rest of the Tribe?" AmethystClaw glanced over at the other tom, not as much of a threat as the other... not that she really thought of the first as much of a threat either. She swished her tail and then curled it around her right hind as she noted the two held a few similarities as well. Littermates? Possibly. Giving a yawn she flicked the claws of her right forepaw lazily. "Dont really know.. don't really give a fuck. Dead or wandered off of their own will." She'd turn that amethyst gaze to the lighter pelted tom. "As for ywhat your father was like..." she'd retract her claws and simply scratch at one of her ears. "A complete and utter bastard with a psychotic twist. A dictartor and a general through and through as well as a murderous cutthroat. THAT pretty much sums up your father kiddo." She'd then lay down and stare at the two, oddly-colored eyes holdign a look that just seemed to look through them.. that or maybe she was so bored with them she was occupying herself with looking at something behind them. Banyan frowned a little at the stranger's explanation. Oh well, he hadn't been expecting much from what he'd known about Whirling Winds, but he was still unsatisfied. That would have to be found out later. "Oh, hmm." he muttered, flicking his tail around his paws. It occured to him that this she-cat was a sharp cookie, or at least very observant if she had been able to guess their liniage in a moment. "Oh, I'm Banyan, by the way, and this is Nailer, I don't know if you guys already introduced, so... hi!" he smiled, trying to be as pleasant as possible, even if this she-cat used to be part of Whirling Winds. Qestrel. Tabbico she-cat crouched near the ground, eyes fixed angrily on a twitchy little titmouse. Sky would have been awfully disappointed in the she-cat; her form was off, and she obviously wasn't paying the mouse her full attention. In fact, her mind had just strayed to the arrival of the new cat, and Nail's apparent relation to it. A silent growl curl her lip. How was she supposed to put up with all of these cats in her desert? And how was she supposed to find camp - and her mother - with a group tagging along that just kept getting bigger? Unconsciously, the cat's tail twitched, rustling two branches of long grass; the titmouse shot bolt upright, eyes searching for a moment for the source of the sound. Kes saw it jerk, felt a flood of panic fill her belly and threw herself forward, paws slapping down on either side of it while her jaws ducked down to make the kill. It was messy and something to be ashamed of, but it was a kill. The tabbico gathered up the rest of her catch, a lizard and some dull brown bird, and turned her paws to head home by way of the oasis. Why not? She was parched and exhausted, and she was certain they weren't even all that concerned by her disappearance back at home. Awkwardly managing her prey, she headed towards the three pools, practically waltzing right up to them before she noticed the dark shapes. The scent of death and a feather was thick in her nose; she couldn't tell their smell, but she could make out what looked like Nailer in the dappled moonlight under the trees. "Nail?" she called a little uncertainly, having dropped her catch at her feet. The tabbico stood ready to fight if she had to, a frown on her muzzle and green eyes darting back and forth. Nailer considered the she-cat's answer with mild distress. It seemed the only surviving member of the Tribe was a bitter disenchanted crone. Kes would be heartbroken by her blase attitude towards everything the young group had come to idolize. Well, that or Kes would blatantly ignore the she-cat's apathy in favor or drooling- Nailer frowned, not at all liking where his thoughts were going. He decided to focus on something else. "How'd you know who Banny's dad was?" The young tom's voice was full of wariness. He had never seen this she-cat before. Tribe member or not, what if she had been spying on them? Nailer decided that he did not trust this cat. He would send her on her ready way, only... Kestrel was coming. He whirled around instantly and trotted a few paces towards his friend. "Kes!" He followed her gaze back towards the stranger and frowned. Obviously, he wasn't going to enjoy his next words. "She claims to be a member of the Tribe," he growled. He wanted to tell Kes that the stranger had known that Ban was Marsh's on and was therefore perhaps not to be trusted, but he didn't know if the stranger knew that he and Banny were littermates. Clearly she wasn't a fan of their father and if the stories were true then Marshland had a lot of enemies. Maybe enemies who wouldn't mind carving out a little revenge out of the hides of Marshland's offspring. "She knows Marshland has a son." We shouldn't trust her. AmethystClaw watched the tom and simply smirked lightly grooming her paw and then using it to clean her face and whiskers nonchalantly. Suspicious little brat wasnt he? Giving a yawn she looked to the young queen and sat up before stretching. "I am a tribe member.. or ex-tribe. Who knows after Marsh left." She'd then lock her gaze on the back of Nail's skull and snort "It's called lucky guess kid. That and kittens share some of their parents features in their face and body. Its not that hard to figure out when you pay attention." She'd then focus her attention on the she-cat. Calico? mixed maybe? hmm.. was she a offspring of Whirling winds too? Banyan had no idea what Marsh looked like, but he had been told that his creamy and partially splotched coat had been inhereted from him just as Nail's eyes had been. He blinked, a bit disappointed that his effort to seem friendly had gone completely unnoticed. Not a very cheery bunch, were they? He sighed and turned towards the new she-cat. He'd not had the opportunity of meeting her, other than being chastized for entering the tunnel that one time, and was fairly cautious around her. But Nailer seemed to trust this "Kes", so he would too. After all, if she was friends with his brother, how bad could she be? "She's right you know," Banny piped up, noticing his brother's distrust, then bit his lip, afraid to speak out of place. Qestrel felt a rush of relief that she was right, it was Nailer. Probably not for the reasons the tom would've prefered, but hey. Confident now that she had backup, she turned her eyes to the other shape; that must've been Nail's brother, the voice was the same from yeseterday. Her eyes flicked to Nail's face when he spoke, a little frown turning down the corners of her mouth. "What's your name?" she asked the older she-cat, frown deepening at the patronizing nickname she gave to Nail. No one talked to her cats like that. Then again, they had said she was part of Whirling Winds.. Torn between what to feel, the tabbico flicked her tail, giving Ban only a passing glance as he spoke. "I hunted," she added to Nail, suddenly remembering the point of this whole foray. She stepped away from the prey, giving him leave to get something to eat while thinking things through. "From Whirling Winds, then?" she echoed, still looking a mite distrustful and... something else? Annoyed? Perhaps if her mother had been of a different Tribe, she would've taught Kestrel some manners, but for now she just stared boldly at the other cat and waited for some answers. Nailer. Bullshit. No cat could remember facial features from years-dead cat so well as to identify them in the cat's offspring. Memory was one thing but Nailer knew for a fact that they had some traits from their mother. The 'he has his mothers x, y, z' comments had gotten old so very very fast. Clearly this she-cat had been spying on them! With all the arrogant, impatient fury of his father, Nailer whirled on his heels and crossed the one and a half loping strides it took to get all up in the she-cat's face. He knew such would give her time to move but at this moment he just wanted to get in close quarters with her. He wasn't as massive and bulky as his father, but he had enough meat on his bones to pack a punch. His mother, a thinner leaner creature had taught him to fight using her style of battle as opposed to his father's blunt battering ram style. His mother fought by slipping and sliding like an eel. It was harder with Nailer's size but he managed. He wanted to get in as quickly as possible and the instant he did he would strike out with ferocious claws mean and sickle-shaped and gleaming in the moonlight. He would aim a series of short slashes at her face, throat, or chest, pacing himself to keep light on his paws. He knew he'd have to move quickly to deal with this more experienced (supposedly) fighter. AmethystClaw glared balefully as she saw him close the distance and her own wickedly curved claws came forth as she prepared to fight off this haughty male. Normally a sudden attack like this would excite her but Amethyst had matured (mostly XD) and it did nothign more then to irritate the already miscontent queen. When he lashed out with his strikes she took one to her face, the claws traveling over the old scars Marsh had left ot mark her as a tribe member, before she turned her side to his onslaught leaving his claws to tangle and pull at her thick fur as she curved her body in a cresent shape towards Nail her own claws arcing to strike at his face. Banyan stumbled backwards as his brother ran forwards, ears flicking back on his head. His lip curled as he got over the initial shock of the charge and saw the other cat make a move towards his brother. Oh, no! Not if he could help it! He may not have been much of a fighter, he may have rather had a nice talk and settle things like mature adults, but the protective little brother wasn't about to let some stranger hurt his littermate. Hissing and bristling, the sandy tom bolted forward, curved claws gleaming as he raced to the long haired she-cat. He would stop short for a moment and leap while her attention was turned to Nail, taking advantage of her busied movements to rear up and wrap his front paws around the back of her neck, just behind her shoulders while trying to bite at her ears. He wouldn't do any real damage if he could help it, but he had to get her off of him because raaagh! Qestrel's eyes flew open in surprise as Nail took off for the stranger cat; her claws sank into the sand for a moment before she rocketed forward herself. The tabbico had no intention of joining the fight if she could help it; on one side, she had cats she trusted (well, okay, one cat she trusted) and on the other was Whirling Winds. Getting into the middle of that would be like thrusting herself into a vat of bubbling oil: namely, unpleasant. That didn't mean she couldn't try and stop it. What was the point of having Nailer on her side if he ended up getting injured? "Stand down!" she screeched to the two littermate toms, tail lashing as she shot towards Nail's side and tried to muscle (probably rather ineffectually, seeing as she was little and skinny and the rust-colored tom was quite the opposite) him away. "You guys live in my desert, you play by my rules!" she spat, glaring at the three of them and trying to gain some semblance of control. Nailer snarled as his claws caught on the thick fur. He noted with grim satisfaction that she wasn't nearly as large as she looked. Half of her had to be fur! Unwilling to play the fly caught in a spider's web, the silver-eyed warrior sheathed his claws and detached himself from her side. With Banny occupying the hag's face, Nailer crouched low. He cast a flicker of a glance at the tabbico. "My fight," he rumbled, using the simplest of words to make his point. Then, like a spring held down and then released, he sprang at her throat. He'd learned his lesson about her wooly fur and, instead of attacking with teeth or claws, went at her with his head. He aimed to headbutt her windpipe and knock her to the ground that way. AmethystClaw had paused when the she-cat had interjected, as for the smaller tom's assault she merely did her best to ignore it, though he was making it more difficult to focus her sight on the other tom, she was used to harsh fighting and such a half-hearted assault wouldn't deter her much. Feeling the other tom abandon her side she didnt like how things were going, so without any care of grace she tossed herself towards the sound of the other cat his head knockign into the lower parto f her chest and upper stomach as she tumbled, takign the paler tom with her if he'd been foolsih enough to keep hold of her before she'd force herself onto her stomach. "Enough! Are you such a blind tom that you'd attack antoehr for something so stupid as a lucky damn guess!" Her nostrils would flare and she'd glare him down balefully. "I dont care what you think I am but I haven't survived years in this desert to deal with suspicious toms who feel the need to attack anyone they want!" she was bristling head to tail and if Nailer pursued her again she'd be damned if anythign kept her from attempting to rip him a new arse. Qestrel's lip curled with outrage at the tom's refusal to stop, at his outright challenge to her imagined authority, and it was all she could do not to stamp her feet. "Fine," she spat, backing up, tail lashing. "Fine, have your stupid fight," she added, brattiness at not getting her way showing through loud and clear. She stormed over to Ban; she didn't really like him, but him telling Nail that it was stupid endeared him slightly to her. And at least he'd stopped when she'd told him to, whether that had been because he knew what was coming or out of actual deference to her order. The tabbico gave an angry huff, claws curling over into the ground with irritation until the fight was over. Fine. She could wait. She'd just give Nail the cold shoulder and a plethora of filthy looks. Nailer dropped to the ground after slamming the she-cat. He landed neatly on all four paws, ready to go another round despite his brother's abandonment of the fight. The she-cat was right. He didn't hate the fact, but he didn't like it one bit. Still, he oughtn't of attacked her. Still defiant, he glared right back at her with eyes as silver as the moon and filled with all the dislike and distrust that he felt. "Sorry," he meowed tersely, deciding that he really would mean the apology but only once he cooled down a bit. The adrenaline and battlelust were still hot in his veins and he seethed. He tried not to look at Banny, not to show his brother the resentment that the pale tom didn't deserve. Kestrel's ire did nothing to ease Nailer's turmoil and everything to increase it. His tailtip twitched with residual anger and he paused for a breath longer before turning abruptly from the scene and made his way to the base of a boulder. Suddenly tired and determinedly miserable, the young cat curled up in the shadow of the boulder to sleep. AmethystClaw stopped her glaring after a moment and she sat up from her crouch and she groomed her paw drawing it over her torn up ears(not banny's work XD they've been shredded over the years). After she finsihed she'd look at the tom as he apologized. "It's fine." She then went back to her silent grooming as nonchalant as she had been when she first arrived. After a bti she turned her eyes to look at Kes. "You asked my name... It's AmethystClaw... my tribal name is Jewel where future gleams." she'd tehn lay down and groom her shoulder lightly before turnign to look back at her eyes half-lidded as she relaxed. Banyan felt a little hurt at Nailer's anger and looked away as well, but he was, admittedly, a little bit happy that Kes had finally noticed him. He was used to be stepped on and completely ignored, so that was a nice change. Amethyst's introduction ... directed at Kes... was just more evidence of that. He had asked earlier, and been ignored, no surprise. But, like he said, it had been like that with his mom, too, and he'd grown accustomed to the background, comfortable in it, even. "It's late, we should go back." he suggested, trying to lighten the mood and get Nail to some place where he could cool off. Namely away from Ame. Qestrel followed Nailer with her eyes as he headed off; her tail flicked once with residual irritation, but it was leaching away slowly, like heat sucked into the desert night sky. She cast another glance over her shoulder at the tom, observing his dark mass at the bottom of a boulder, then returned her eyes to the older cat. "Well, AmethystClaw, I'm Kestrel." She paused, unsure whether she should continue, and then added impulsively, "Captain Sky's daughter." Her chin lifted a little bit with pride at the mention of her lineage. Still, whether she was a proud puffball or not, and whether or not Ame was a true Whirling Winds cat, she felt the same traces of mistrust that Nailer had. It was really more because she was a strange cat than anything else, but that was certainly enough to ruffle her feathers. "I'd invite you to stay the night with us, but I don't think that's a good idea. I'm sure you understand," she added, in the cool tone that her mother had always used when she wanted to imply "if you have a problem with this, I really don't give a fuck." After all, Kes was the self-imagined leader of their hodge-podge group; she figured she was allowed to go all frosty if she wanted to. "But I'd like to meet again, and discuss Whirling Winds.. if that's okay with you." She was suddenly sort of shy, hope clear on her face and only a moment's regret that she'd been so cold before. Oh well, Kestrel was mildly mercurial in nature; things like shifting moods happened. Meeting concluded, Kes flicked her eyes from Ban to Nail. "I think that's a good idea. Ready to go?" |
