I'm going to build a budgie flight cage! I wanted to build a bird building and aviary this summer, but looks like I'll have to do it next year. But I decided to start a fall/winter project, and an indoor flight cage would be good! Since I do bird rescue work as I am a member of a rescue, I need a bigger cage for my budgies. I'm sure they will enjoy it more too. And with budgies...the more the merrier, right?! LOL, this means I will have space for more 'keets too! I've already picked out a place in my house where I shall put the cage. The rescue also takes in small animals (rodents, ferrets, rabbits), reptiles, and dogs too. I take in guinea pigs and stuff too, so I found out about cages you can build for small pets for only $30, and, much to my delight, I discovered, with some modifications, you can make them for budgies too! n.n It involves coroplast, the type of plastic they use for signs (sometimes you can get it cheap from sign makers too). And metal cubes you can buy from Wal Mart or Target (I'll have to find them some place else, I hate Wal Mart) and you make the cages out of that. Do you think this is a good idea? The site is www.guineapigcages.com. Obviously my cage will be closed in and larger, as it is for birds. |

chewing, yes that is a good point. Sounds like a good plan overall though. |

Hmm, I have considered the chewing. The plastic is quite tough, and I don't think they will manage to chew the whole thing away, but maybe if I put the coroplast around the bars? I'll measure the bar spacing to see how far apart it is. I'll try to find one small enough for keets. |

We made one for some guinea pigs we had last year. Most of the openings in the squares are way too big for parakeets. I saw a different brand that had smaller openings, more like you'd see on a metal patio table, but I think it's be too hard to see the birds. |
