As I mentioned in a previous post, I now have the chickens in their own living quarters, a chicken coop. The reason I did that is not because they were hurting the pigeons or anything. Actually, they were non violent towards them. I did lock up Twister at night for his own safety. The reason is that chickens will peck each other when they are annoyed or something. They don't go at it till someone is seriously hurt, they give a good peck to the chicken that is bothering them. However, if they peck a pigeon, it could hurt. Twister, with his issues, can't get out of the way. If he is in the way and gets pecked and still doesn't get out of the way, they will peck again. It could be very dangerous to him so I locked him up at night and let him out first thing in morning after letting the chickens out. But the reason I decided to move the chickens is I caught them stealing pigeon eggs and eating them. I felt so bad for the pigeons. They would stick their head in the nesting box and simply take the egg and eat it and the poor pigeons would stand by helplessly and watch their eggs get stolen. There was nothing they could do about it.

Anyway, here is their coop. I still have not painted the outside but will hopefully get to it sometime next week. I have a tarp over it to keep the wood from warping from the recent rain. The inside is painted as I couldn't let them move in until I painted it as I did not want them ruining the wood with their poop. Chickens are prolific poopers, they do it in their sleeping quarters and they do it a lot. I am glad it is good fertilizer since they produce so much. Their coop is small but that's okay. It really is just for sleeping and nesting. During the day, they are out in the yard doing their chicken stuff. They do go in it during the day. I had to remove the food as the pigeons discovered it and they go in there all day long. I now have the food at the back against the wall behind the trees. The pigeons don't go back there because it does not leave them room to fly off if they have to. But they do go in the coop anyway and peck at the food that has fallen out of the chicken feed bowl. There is no chicken food waste. The pigeons take care of that, LOL.

Anyway, here are some of the photos.

Yes, it is great to have a carpenter for a friend. It was supposed to be a simple design but as he was building it, he kept. Coming up with great ideas that he would incorporate. What was so nice is that he had fun building it. It was so fun to see him enjoying himself while building. He was like a kid in a candy store, he would call me to come see what he added or changed.

And to top it off, the chickens love their new home. The wild pigeons do as well, LOL. The wild pigeons walk in and out of there all day long. I love the backyard. It is so relaxing. And once I get pigeon illnesses under control, I really will be able to enjoy the birds and the yard.

I love it and it is not really a coop more like a Chicken Condo. Great that you have a good friend like that
