The two lofts; How they look

Here is the second coat on the loft. Much whiter now and will do the green on the walls or back wall. Was gonna do today but had a migraine. Instead I just tended to birds and cleaned house. Its gonna be slow going. Then have to build and install perches, put down either the hay as Tish says or the pellets. Also have to still fill in a few larger gaps that I think weasels can get into the door space, so will have to screw in some plywood strips to block that and then will introduce birds.
Getting a little disenchanted as the info I keep reading says the males will try to kill eachother and any young. The males will drive the hens too hard and or scalp them. So I may have to only put in the males as it seems I have more of them and then put the hens in the smaller dog house till I can get the guy back to install the other loft attached to the back with a small door. Then I can seperate the sexes. So seems like its gonna be a bloody winter project. Wish I could just built the damn thing myself, may end up having the hubby and me try to erect it and just call the guy in for windows and doors.

K, so trudgin right along. Today started to paint the walls green and then started blowing and raining and cold but I stuck with it till done. Glad I did cuz now I can see where the front window is leaking in and the side one has a tiny leak. Ill put some caulking in the spots and that will take care of it.

Will post pics when photobucket co operates.

Maryann, do NOT use hay. That will mold. Use straw. It's important that you do NOT use hay but straw. I only use hay to feed the guinea pigs but use straw as bedding.

Wow, I don't know what to say about the violence. I don't know what I do that keeps my birds pretty much getting along. I will have to think about it and watch them closely and let you know what I observe. I may be kind of dumb, but when I get a bird, I just put him in the aviary expecting everyone to get along. Where you had them housed, is there enough room to fly around to get away or is it more confined? I'm looking at the dog run in your photo and it seems that there is plenty of room to fly to get away. Maybe the difference with my pigeons is that everyone has some sort of physical problem. They do defend their territories but for the most part, they leave each other alone. Maybe that's the difference, I don't know.

I really and truly would love to see them get along. Maybe you can speak to one of those pigeon experts in your area or join a pigeon group and see what they have to say.

TIsh, ya no, me and the hubby had a word over the hay vs straw thing lol. I meant to say straw, the yellow dried straw cuz hay is for eating and has a moisture content. Just an oversight in typing. For me I have always interchanged the words.

I think the reason I have problems right now is that initally the pigeons have had a large space and the original high flyers think since they were there first that they own the entire dog run. So today I split the flock. I locked up Posh and her spouse in their cage after they had excersize. Then I put the dark check and the jacobin, and two racers in there and they left eachother alone. They had a great time laying around and then getting a rain bath. The other side then had the hawk strike one and two racer males and the new grizzles, they seemed to all get along.

The dark check was less aggressive when I moved him from his side to the opposite side that he is not used to. Im hoping that when introduced into the loft that I will have enough high perches all the way around that the males will be satiated and not fight. Also I think I will initially not put the hens in only the males and see how it goes. So today wasnt quite so bad.

Okay, just wanted to make sure you didn't use hay. I understand using the words interchangeably so from now on, if you say hay, I will know you mean straw. Straw is cheaper as well.

I think I paid 10 bucks. I'll have to look up the exchange rate to see what that is in Canadian dollars. I did get a bunch bales for free (about 8 bales) from this place that wanted to get rid of theirs because they used it as a prop for Halloween. They still have six more that they would like me to take. I just need to get over there and take it. I used that free straw to spread all over the yard where the animals live. I was shocked to see how much the wild pigeons loved the straw. The Peckerheads use it to build their nest. I know Kosha loves the straw, she makes herself a little nest to lay in and catch some sun in the morning.

Next year if I can't get it for free, I'm going to buy it just before winter sets in. At $10 a bale, I can get enough for the whole area where the animals live for around $100. Not bad as the area is quite big.

p.s. I just calculated $10 american dollars to canadian dollars -- it's about $12 canadian dollars. It's cheaper there.

Have u checked any co ops or farm supplies, thats where I get mine. I bought a third of a bale from a pumpkin guy for 4 bucks cuz I only needed a bit for nesting material for posh, but now that I know I can use for pigeon coop, I will buy the giant 6 buck bale next time.

I got mine from the feed store. Since I don't go through a lot, $10 is not something that is too pricey. I bought a bale a number of months ago to use for the guinea pigs and for the houses in the aviary and I still have more than 1/2 a bale left. Now if I had horses, etc. and had to go through a lot of straw, I might look for a cheaper source. I will check into it before I have to get another bale and if they are close, I will go that route.
