Now thats some interesting stuff. Shame something so smart has to always be looking over their shoulder. Good you can keep them.

I can't get that line out of my mind "born to be prey" thats awful isn't it?

Yes it is, but I will not fly them during hawk migration or when there is so much foliage in my yard, will wait till after migration and give it a go. They can just go to nest for now and they get a good wing stretch in the run. I just now removed all the old wood on top of the second one and have cut snow fencing to cover the top and will plastic tie all together so the dark check can have a flight of his own for now and will eventually separate hens and cocks. My bud cut my round log perches into flat tops so the pigeons can stand as they like or prefer flat surfaces to roost. I still have more things to do but raining too much today. So once it is set up, they should be comfy cozy :)

FOLIAGE! you can say that again. Going down to Walgreens, at a stop sign, tree next to me caught my eye...........out flys a big damn hawk! Guess I was a little surprised because it was a low tree. Wow ... wonder who he was after...he was hiding out in that little tree just waiting.

So long little guy whoever you were.

Well I got the snow fence cut and laid on but have to tie it on tomorrow. By then the dark check will be able to fly in his own run and not fight the white one. Then I will be able to separate hens and cocks. Hopefully all will be safe then

Thanks for posting this. I was looking at my aviary. Nothing can see them from above since there is a roof on the aviary and it is built under a large pine tree. I have never seen any squirrels in my backyard and in fact, have only seen one squirrel the whole time I've lived in Vegas. It was at the park. I guess because of the intense heat and lack of water, we get different types of wildlife. I did look around the ground on the outside of the aviary after reading this to make sure that nothing can get inside. Obviously we have cats and they have come into the backyard at night. The cats simply can't get into the aviary. Not only that, but the cats would not be able to see the pigeons at night since they go into their little wooden houses to sleep.

I loved the things you posted about pigeons and their intelligence. I've read that before -- they really are wonderful birds. With the wild flock, I really get to see their intelligence and how they interact with each other. They are awesome creatures.

Tish, I used to think pigeons were stupid birds and pests when I was a kid. I guess I was influenced by the general public and media. My first experince with a pigeon was a white or mostly white bird one day showed up at my house and was roosting on our verandah on top of the light. It pooped everywhere so my mom made me get rid of it. She made me drive it far away and release it, only to have it beat me home!!!! Tried this twice. She then ordered me to kill it. I did NOT of course as I loved animals. Since I didnt kill it, she got a neighbor to do it, he drowned it, I was devestated. I hated my mother for that, but she was raised on a farm and animals meant meat for her. She used to buy quails by the box ful, live quails and kill them and pluck them and eat them. GROSSED me the hell out. I think that all traumatized me. Anyway, I dont blame my mom for that now as I realzied her upbringing of owning a farm, she is much more canadianized now and likes animals, just wont own one. I still am tortured over the death of that bird, especially after I rescued and owned them and saw how sweet and gentle and intelligent there are. I wish the general public could see what I see. Even breeders of birds dont see them as pets but avenue for sports and racing and showing but NOT as a pet but possession. I dont like that industry either.
