Pass, I was gonna take a video clip and ask you if you had ever come across this. Mocha was fine one sec and twitching and unable to perch the next? This constant twitch that I figured she would die. I placed her in a seed up to keep her stable from falling off a perch. I gave her a bit of medicam thinking she had some inflammation of the brain. She had gone into the flight with the rest, had a bath and then boom on the bottom of the cage twitching???? I gave her some glucose water as well thinking, maybe she was dehydrated? I guess I just do what I think MAY help rather than do nothing. A little while later, same thing. Then something struck me. I wonder if she has a calcium deficiency??? I remembered watching episodes of James Herriot and remembering a show where a dog had pups and was twitching and weak from hypocalcemia. They have these fits and will die shortly without a calcium injection. So u know where Im heading now right. Well, I quickly gave her 3 drops of liquid calcium right in the beak. It was near bedtime now and I figured, she'll be gone in the morning. I was actually afraid to look, well, there she was standing and NOT twitching. But still on the floor of the cage slighltly puffed. She was not puffed during the daytime twitch fest. So I gave her a hand feed in the mouth, some more glucose water and she is under a heat lamp. Now, Im wondering if the calcium was the trick. Now here is my 10 dollar question. MY BIRDS GET TONS of calcium, minerals and greens. IF it WAS a calcium problem. HOW THE HELL can it be??? They get sunlight as well. The other thing I can think of is salt toxicity, as I had tossed a pinch of salt at the bottom of the cage for all the birds. All cages get it. Wonder if she ate too much in one go? Anyway, the fact that she is still standing and not twitching is a good thing. I will take video if it happens again. |

First of all, I'm glad she's better. And if they are getting their calcium it shouldn't be the problem Unless she does not care much for the calcium you are providing and she's not eating any. In that case you should provide it in her water. |

This is the email I sent a person I have sold a male to that is trying to breed with a new hen he got. I am cc you guys because I have learned from it. Not sure there was anything else I could have done other than deliver the egg myself, see below. Sucks either way as she seemed fine and was warm. I hope it was a heart attack and that she didnt suffer at all. My hen Mocha just die this morning. Here is why. I believe it was egg binding now, but was treated for accordingly, the care I gave was for egg binding as well. The only other thing I could have done and tried was to deliver the egg myelf. This is very risky tho. U have to decide that if the egg breaks, the hen dies. So hard guess to make, leave it and she delivers or take it and risk the infection and death. It all seems like a bad choice. I think I would at least try next time. I have delivered eggs before with success. I have also seen hens break their own eggs during delivery and even poop out the guts of the egg with NO infection. So NOW I know that the twitching IS related to nerve from either an egg pressing on the nerve in the abdomen. Im glad I gave her the medicam for pain and inflammation. I still dont know why she died tho, she was hydrated, fed, pain relieved and warm. As I said, the egg was perfectly normal in size and texture Day before yesterday, she was fine, out in the flight for sun, had a bath but then I noted she was on the flight floor, not uncommon as they like to stay low and sit in the sun for warmth after bathing. I put her in her cage to dry and she was still at the bottom but now she was twitching with a hard twitch to the left. Hard enough that it lifted her right foot off the floor every time She almost fell of the nest and had a hard time perching. She was not twitching in the flight. I thought it may be stroke and gave her anti inflammatory. Then I thought it could be hypocalcemia and gave her 3 drops of liquid calcium in the water with glucose. I then put her in own cage with heat and hand fed her. The twitching was stopped the next morning, which was yesterday. Things looked good. She was resting comfortably. I gave her more glucose water and went to bed. I woke up just now to find a nice perfect egg laid and a dead bird. The egg was niether calcified or soft, absolutely perfect and not large, just a normal perfect egg. I have it and can take a pic. Now, DESPITE doing everything right, and all the supportive care, the bird still died. This could be age, bad luck, who knows. The hen was 4 years old. |

Thanks Vi. I feel mixed. Im happy that even tho, I didnt suspect egg binding, I treated for it anyway. I do with I had taken the chanse now in hindsight that she was going to die anyway. I should have made an attempt to deliver the egg. At least I know she was not in pain or hungry as she had a good dose of medicam and feed. So just sucks. |

One of my budgies is going as well, she has been in her cage on her own for about 3 months now as I have tried every thing. I can see that her abdomen enlarged and is probably in liver failure. I believe even with the medicam she is uncomfortable and I fear I have to euthenize. I am trying one last holistic thing before I do it tho, but it bothers me to know she may be in pain. I will give her till tomorrow and if I see no improvement, I have to do it. |

OH NO. I've been gone all day and read this. I'm so sorry. The best part was that she was pain free, warm and fed. |
