Today is a beautiful day out, in the 70's with a light breeze. I have little Peckerhead out on the ledge in a cage. A bunch of pigeons are next to his cage as I put food there to attract them so that little Peckerhead can get used to them. Boy oh boy is he ready to be released. He's not a happy camper right now. He wants OUT. He's pacing back and forth, putting his head out the bars trying to get out. The pigeons are trying to get in to get to the food. He's showing no signs of being scared or uncomfortable around the other pigeons. He just wants to be with them.

His tail feathers have fully developed and he can fly. I'm thinking of letting him go tomorrow if the weather is just as nice as today. It's been chilly out at night but not cold.

What do you think?

Well thats exacctly what I said he would do. Its up to you, if you feel comfy and the weather is good and he is fully flighted. Just do it earlier in the morn when the flock is there, make a GOOD scan of the sky and make sure no hawks around. This way he has the day to acclimate to the wild flock. Good luck, I cant wai to hear how he does :) Keep an eye for him in and around your cage area when u release him, he may still try to stick aorund at nite time close to his parents and what he knows. I hope he will just follow the flock to their nighttie roost and be safe with numbers Let me know how it goes :).

I guess I should say something but I don't know what to say. Maybe Mr. Skinny will be there to show Little Peckerhead the ropes. Bye little guy. :) :(

It's a bit too windy out today and a bit chilly so I'll wait for another day or two. The outdoor flock hangs out here a lot during the day. What they do is eat breakfast and then go off somewhere and return in the early afternoon and hang out. That's when they hang out on my windows, such as my kitchen widow looking in. I usually give in and feed them again -- I can't help it looking at those cute faces looking in.

As long as he hangs out with the flock, Little Peckerhead is going to be okay. I'll mark him like I did Mr. Skinny so I can keep track of him.

Hi Cathy,

It's been fun to have him around although it was the Peckerhead's that raised him, not me. I just got to watch and provide the food, LOL. Since I knew I'd be releasing him, I didn't handle him much.

At some point, I'll be keeping one of the babies. When I decide to do that, I'll handle a LOT and help feed the baby when it's not just hatched.
