Ed isn't doing well this morning. His back legs keep giving out and he is falling down. He also looks like he has a stiff neck. I made him scrambled eggs on dry food, he wouldn't eat that so I put some of his fav wet food on top of that and tried to hand feed him. I have a pain pill for him which will fix him up a little but he cannot have it on an empty stomach. He ate a few bites out of my hand but I don't think it was enough food for the pill. I am sure he is hungry but doesn't feel like eating cause of the pain he must be having. I'm going to take a shower and then try something else.

Vi, when's hes that bad off, u can have the vet give a medicam injection. That would help him feel good enough to want to eat and then can be followed up with oral pain meds, if it is a treatable pain and not something different. I hope for the best for you both. Sometimes when dogs get old, the owners think that it is old age, but could be a different issue. Might be worth a quick trip to the vers to be sure its not something new and treatable. Good luck and take good care. |

Good morning and "MERRY CHRISTMAS." I knew he was really hungry and gave him some hamburgar. After some time he ate that so I was able to give the pain meds. He rested a little and then felt a lot better and quit falling down. I've thought a dozen times about the Vet but hate to take him there as I know what they will say. Fact is....Eddie can't leave. Period. This morning he is doing pretty well. I hate to give meds but maybe I'll think about half or less every other day. Up until now I have just given as needed. He is getting very thin in the hind quarters. Is that because he is not excerising those muscles... tryed to get him to stand in the sun on the porch but he just stood there and shook. Well anyway things are better today .... we opened most of our presents last night in a present frenzy! ha ha I got a ring that I love for sure. Will take a pic later. Have a great day and again Merry Christmas. Vi Edited by VIOLET12, Dec 25 2011, 03:05 PM.

Thats great Vi. Ok, here is what u can do. I know how u feel about the vets for sure. But in the event it was something else making him feel bad, you would need to know so u can treat. Since he did feel better with the meds and was more mobile, sounds like to me a musculosceletal issue, that the meds work for. So I am in the exact same position as you with my 13 year old dog. Trooper has trouble getting up and so on but we have to choose quality of life. Meds arent gonna kill the dog unless u o.d. him severely. At this stage and age, they will only help. I used to do as you say, as needed but now that is not good enough anymore and YES the inactivity is what causes the atrophy of the leg muscles, so if you want him to have mucscles and mobility, the best chance is, pain free. He feels no pain, he moves more, his muscles work better. I give my dog medicam every day to every other day or so. He is a bit weak in the back legs but he is still very mobile. Chiropractic adjustments do WONDERS for him. So I may take him after xmas for a session. Costs 30 bucks. Well worth it. Gets all the kinks out. Glad to hear Eddie rallied. I would keep the meds fairly regular, and let him be more mobile and comfortable as needed. Edited by Crazy Bird Lady, Dec 26 2011, 07:45 AM.

I know when Tulip got old and was in pain with her arthritis, she had a hard time moving around. There came a point when I kept her on pain meds continually instead of the 'as needed' that I was doing. I think it helped the quality of her life as she was just old. Ut certainly helped her mobility. I'm glad to hear that he ate and is moving around. Merry Christmas Eddie ![]() Can't wait to see a photo of your ring !!! |

I was just seriously thinking about getting Ed to the vet for a shot but now he has rallied and is walking around pretty good. Something must have gotten stuck. Anyway I know we must face this....but happy he is feeling much better.
