I need some advice.... a friend of mine bought a small budgie for her sons birthday and she brought it by today and i beleive it has two broken legs. Does anyone have an idea of how to best care for it or how i can help it?

Well i did some looking online and found a little help and advice i got her in a box on a towel and a heating pad ... she is drinking and is thinking about food but not eaten yet...

R u sure they are broken or just splayed?? Any way we can get a pic? If broken, u need to splint with tape or take either back to the store to at least get ur money back even if u keep it. If they have the money, go to a vet and have them set the legs for you.

I need more intel on the legs tho. Google "splay leg" in budgies and see if it looks the same and lt us know. If so the treatment may be different or useless depending on the age of the bird.

Careful with the heating pad, do not overlook the bird, If they are broken or splayed and she can't get away from the heat, she could be in trouble. Pad should only cover a portion of the bottom of the cage and she needs to be able to get away from it if she is too hot.

Also if broken, she will need some pain meds or she may not eat and if she won't eat, she will be dead within 24 hours. Also make sure she has access to water and can reach it.

I would say remove any perches from the cage, put a soft cloth on the bottom of it and scatter see all over the cage floor and a small shallow bowl of water there as well.

Good luck and shame on the store for selling and injured bird, unless it wasn't that way when they got it. If they are responsible for the injury, they owe it to the bird to take it for a vet visit.

If you could post a picture for Maryann it would make it easier for her to give advice. Sorry to hear about this, how horrible to have to go through this.

We are all curious Drew. What happened? Please let us know and by the way we would love to hear from you again. Do you have any pets? :)

I have a feeling this is a one time panic post looking for help. Not sure if the person will answer. Pity. Would have liked to know the story behind and if the bird was ok. I just can't imagine a pet store would sell a bird with two broken legs, or that the purchaser would not notice it. We're not getting the full story.

Well if he has two broken legs then he can't even stand up. Right? I've never seen a bird with broken legs and hope I never do. Whatever the story I sure hope they can take him to the vet. Poor little thing. :(
