Thanks Vi. Jackie, it is a zebbie hen, a chestnut sided white. I am told she will stay a cleaner white when she molts out. Mine don't beep constantly at all, just when I walk by or talk to them, they will answer back. Only the bubs beep a lot to be cuddled. I could barely put Kiki to bed last nite as she beeped the hell out of me wanting to party all nite!!!!!! Lol. I finally put my foot down. |

On a good note, the injured bub has been demanding and holding down more food. |

Maryann, Just now reading all the updates. I am so tickled that he's doing better and holding down more food. Wow is all I could think of when I read your post that some birds have no crop. |

The injured one? Is he the one that got pecked on the head? Damn...sometimes life is so tough. I keep thinking about all the sick pigeons that land in Tish's back yard. I guess most birds live a terrible short life. If they are lucky enough to land in a yard where someone actually cares....they must think their in Heaven. awwwwwwww

Yeah, they do have a tough life. In fact, today I bathed Mr. Skinny to make sure all the vegetable oil was off so he would have clean feathers to be released. I took photos which I'm going to post later tonight or tomorrow as I want Maryann's opinion as to his weight. He's still skinny but nothing like before. I'm going to let Maryann tell me if he's good for release or if I should hang on to him longer. He's not as meaty as the Peckerheads so he may not be ready yet. Maryanne, will you help me decide? |

Get this. Remember when I had Dirty Bits clutch. Two of them died from crop swelling and redness that I assumed was the parent biting at them???? Well now this white bub hadthe same thing. At first I thought I had burned the crop??? then I realized there can be no way as I feed all three the same formula at the same time and if so the other two would have burnt crops as well. The only thing I can attribute it to is overly aggressive feed response. After the fact I remember reading something like that in one of my books on parrots. When I would introduce the syringe to the white bub, it would literally swallow the canula right into the crop, I would have to pull it out quick as soon as fed so it would not aspirate. The injured dark one did not have that feed response and I would only put the food into its mouth when gaping as to not injure its already injured crop. So now I am thinking HIS original injury was the same as whats happening to the white one now, and the two before them. The problem now is if it swells too much, it will suffocate. Literally from one feed to the very next it ballooned up. So that will be 4 chicks who have had this happen to, one with the parents, two with fosters and now one with me feeding it. How delicate they are. Also the white chick had surpassed the dark in growth as I had to hold back and feed smaller amounts to the dark one. He is gaping and demanding food no problems, but I still have to only feed a bit as his crop will not stretch like the other one has. I also gave this one some medicam diluted as its swelling is more than the dark one had but less than the two other whites that died. The white one did not make it. The swelling was too much. So NOW I have to be aware that aggressive feed response from either parent raised or hand fed in these finches are a real danger. So yet again, out of an entire clutch, only one so far surviving. Even this dark one that has recoverd is still now trying to swallow the entire canula when feeding, so I have to be VERY careful. Its so sad as the white one was doing soooooooo well and starting to pin up. Im tired from doing so many attempts back to back now. I need a few weeks sleep to catch up and then I am either going to try the yellow goulds again or the zebbies one more time. I have to give Inchy a break as well as he has been on eggs to long. They are out in the flight stretching their wings for a bit. |

Well this is the bub today, kind of a funky color. I asked pass to I.d. the color for me. It just may be the normal color, but looks cinnamon to me. ![]() By crazybirdlady at 2011-09-02 Edited by Crazy Bird Lady, Sep 2 2011, 11:00 PM.
