Well Kiki was soooooooooo cute tonite, I was on the phone and she kept hopping over to my hand and tapping it with her beak, if I did not pay attention, she would look up at me and tap my chin, she was sooooooo cute wanting my attention. She decides tonite at bloody midnight to have her first nibble of dry egg food when I tried to put her to bed. So I had to wait for 15 min while she decided to pig out.

Little monkey. Also, her parents r on a few eggs ane I candled them yesterday and they were getting close to hatching, filling up nicely. I check today and there is a chick with a full crop! My intention was to steal them as they hatch but am afraid if I try to remove one at a time as they hatch, they will abandon the entire clutch before they all hatch. I can transfer the unhatched ones to Inchy and may even convince him to take over feeding the hatchd one. But I'f they continue to feed them, I would rather leave them with them and yank the chicks in 4 or 5 days.

Inchy stopped feeding Kiki at 7 days when I just took over for him then. What to do. I don't even want to lose one chick to a bad decision.

For the last 2 clutches, the parents either starved them and or threw them out. I think they tossed them after they died but cannot be sure. I just found them dead one morn at bottom of cage. I will check tomorrow and decide then. If crop is not full, I will pull.

Well I go to check the chick this am and see that the crop is empty so I pull it. I go to check to see if any more eggs have hatched out and pull one egg for Inchy to find another chick in there with a full crop. I had yanked a freshly hatched chick lol. I decided to just hand feed till Inchys hatches as I am afraid if I mess too much with the zebbies they will abandon. So far so good, they r still feeding the chick. I tried to put the small one under Inchy but he doesn't see the egg to eat so he starts chomping on the chicks head, so I had to pull it.

Chomping on the chick's head??? Glad you saw that one in time, LOL.

Looks like you're going to be very busy wtih feedings. My hat is off to you, I don't know how you do it. I think I'm too busy trying to do 3-4 feedings with my new rescue. And he's a lot easier to feed than what you have!!!

Well what he did was actually do a few pecks as if to see if it was hungry, but he did a few to many for me to feel comfortable. Remember when they chewed the crops of those two plus a teeny one. I think if they don't respond to the feed offer, they keep pecking and do damage. I wasn't gonna take that chance.

Ok, heres the update, those finch parents are completey useless. They fed the first chick for 3 good days, full crop every time I checked right?! Well earlier today I used the flashlite as normal to just light up the opening of the nest and see a bit of eggshell so know that a second chick has hatched. Well I figure I will put my hand in to make sure it is being fed and find it dead and flat, and the other one with an empty crop that seems a bit red and swollen as if chewed????

So pulled him and the remaining egg that had blood all over it, probably from the parents eating the shell and hatching the little one prematurely and it bled a bit.

I hope this 3 day old makes it, seems a bit lethargic and I managed to get some food into the crop, seemed a bit mucousy tho.

So much for letting them TRY to raise ONE BLOODY CLUTCH!! Well, looks like if all goes well, I will have Kiki and the one baby I pulled when hatched yesterday. With a bit of luck, the first born will make it.

Will keep u updated. They both have different skin color so will be different mutations.

The bub that was flattened I believe the parents just decided to eat the egg shell and killed the bub buy hatching it out early cuz they were gonna eat the egg. They didnt anticipate a live chick in there. For all I know it was dead in shell and they were eating the egg, I doubt it tho as the blood would indicate it was alive. Piss me off.

I guess those parents are just no good. I may try the hen with another male down the road, not sure tho who was the culprit but I suspect the male as he sits during the day and the hen at nite.

If the last egg starts to pip, I will put it under Inchy as he is good for fostering for the first 5 to 7 days and then helps me with the weaning. But I cant let him have it any further than that as they seem to just stop feeding them altogether??? It will be a combined effort for sure.
