Davey & Kosha are a new novelty though Kosha is taking up lots of time. She's really needy (I'll post about that later). However, they are not taking any time away from the Peckerheads as the Peckerheads never really wanted to interact with me. On Tuesday or Wednesday, I'm releasing Mr. Skinny. He's no longer too skinny and his keel bone is not so prominent. I'm been working on his muscles by holding him and he flaps. He's doing really well so I'm happy about that. Having company over in a few so gotta go. The lady that adopted out Kosha & Davey to me is coming over for dinner. I'm going to volunteer helping her with the pigs. |

I wanted to clarify ... I was in a rush so I think it came out wrong, LOL. What I meant to convey is that the Peckerheads really never had much use for me. That's always been fine with me as I have all these other critters that need me -- Ducky has always demanded attention. What I find myself having to balance is Kosha who is very needy (understatement) and Ducky. Peanut sits with me when I watch TV so that's easy. I take Davey for walks when I go out so that takes care of that. I'm finding out that Kosha was prbably weaned a bit too early as she's trying to suckle on me. The rescue lady doesn't know for sure when she was pulled from her mom but based on what Kosha is doing, she agrees that Kosha probably was taken from her mom a bit too early. Tha makes her one NEEDY little piglet, LOL. |

Can you give her a small bottle of something while she's watching TV with u on the couch? Little blankie, little bottle .... would that fix her up?

Vi, it would be so cute to do that, however, she's now 8 weeks old. I don't want to regress her. Also, I don't want her on the couch. The reason is that you can't have a baby pig do something you don't want it to do when it's an adult. Tulip used to get on the couch because I taught her that as a baby. However, when she grew up, her sharp hooves poked holes in my couch. I had to purchase a new couch. And then she kept doing it and ruined that couch as well. I decided not to get a new couch as long as I had her because she would just ruin another one. It wasn't her fault. What I do is sit on the floor and let Kosha on my lap but I have to be careful about that as well. Tulip, at 185 lbs also wanted to sit on my lap. What I finally taught her to do is sit down in front of me with her back to me and I would rub her. Or she liked to spoon her body in mine. On another note, I her potty training is going great. She hasn't pooped inside for quite a while which is great since she's been here only a little over a week. The peeing is another story. She can't hold it all night long which is not surprising. However, during the day if she's taken out enough times, she does it outside. Right now I keep her confined and she's using a litter area in the bathroom until she's fully trained. At this young age, they're still too young to have full control over their bladder. The bladder muscles are not fully developed. The leash training is going great. I can lead her from outside to inside without a huge squealing resistance. That little pig can be LOUD. Tonight I was sitting outside on the lawn chair while she ran around the front yard. I had Ducky with me. I wanted to spend some good quality time with him and still have Kosha outside for her training. When she would start to wander where I don't want her to wander, I say sternly "No Kosha." She would stop and return towards me. At least she's learning the word "no" and is complying. You see, I have to get this all down before she's big. In two weeks, she's going in for her spay. I'm going to be so anxious until she comes home. Here's a link to what they do in surgery with pigs. There are some graphic photos of the surgery so if you're queasy, don't look. http://www.lbah.com/potbellypig/pbspay.htm Edited by Tishrei, Aug 9 2011, 09:33 AM.

Well Tish....that was very interesting and informing. I knew I had seen Tulip on a couch...I didn't realize the problems that went along with that. I didn't really know their hoves were sharp or at least never thought about it. So lesson learned for you and proud of you for staying strong. Not knowing all of this I prob would be holding her like a baby with a bottle and of course spoiling her. ha ha ha I would have woken up one morning with a 200 pd. pig in my bed. HELP! Sounds like you have everything under control. Is Ducky adjusting to having the new guys around? and how is the new bird cage? are they still staying inside the cage and not coming out? If so they should be super pissed by now. ha ha ha |

Yeah Vi, with their weight and those hooves, over time they end up making holes in the couch. When I bought the new couch, I put the coffee table, cushions, etc. in front of the couch to keep her off when I was at work. I came home and she moved everything out of the way and got up on the couch. I eventually gave up, LOL. Pigs are smart, stubborn and very persistent. This morning when I took Kosha out for her morning business and breakfast, I decided to do a bit of leash training. After she ate and did her business, I picked up the leash and tugged a bit. I couldn't believe it, we walked to the end of the block and back. She was sooooo good about it. She's coming along much faster than I had hoped or anticipated. She hasn't even been here two weeks and she's not pooping inside (she still pees overnight), walking on the leash, listening to commands (to a certain degree), etc. I honestly thought it was going to take a couple of months but at this rate, in a couple of months, she'll be an old pro. |

Tish that's all great! Saw the pics and no different from a dog or cat spay, identical actually. I have assisted in many of those surgeries. We need more pics of her, she must be growing. |

I'll take some more photos -- I'll go purchase some batteries today ![]() I took her to the park and she had a BALL!! She loved it. She was so good on the leash. Seriously, I'm surprised at how fast she's learning. She has far exceeded my expectations. Okay, enough about Kosha for now. The other critters are beckoning me. I need to pry Ducky away from Peanut. It's the funniest darn thing -- every morning he goes to his cage, does his business and then climbs down and marches over to Peanut's cage where he hangs out most of the day. Weird love affair. |
