I need to weigh her. The vet's report says she was 12 1/2 pounds. NO WAY. She feels like she's at least 20 pounds.

Today she's much better. She ate with such gusto though she's back in bed right now sleeping. I figure she's not going to be 100% for about 10 days.

Unlike Tulip who had this done when she was older, Kosha has dissolving sutures. The sutured her from the inside. Tulip had staples because she was older and larger when she had it done and they needed to use staples to hold her belly together, sutures would not have been strong enough.

I feel so bad for her. She wants to poop and she just can't. I was told it could be up to three days. The muscles are sore from her surgery so while she's trying (and produced just a tiny bit), she isn't getting relief. I decided to give her some raisin bran (I removed the raisins). She's drinking plenty of fluids so that's not a problem plus I add water to her food.

Maryann, any suggestions to soften her stool so she can go? I don't want to give medication so I'm wondering about something natural. Tonight I'll take her on a short walk to get her system moving.

Thanks Vi,

I can tell you I'm not going to do an enema, LOL. (Actually, I would if it was absolutely necessary). I do know pigs have impaction problems which is why I have always made sure that Tulip's feed was half feed and half water. Pigs are not big water drinkers. I'm doing the same with Kosha as well. Hmmm, maybe I'll go get some prune juice and mix that with her feed.

I know mineral oil for humans and birds, but for pigs not sure, if they can have any oil, I would suggest veggie or olive. Google and see what u can come up with. Other than that, I would have asked the vet for pain meds so she would not feel pain and could push to go.

Just spoke to the rescue person. I'm going to go with some prune juice mixed with some water to dilute it. Every once in a while, I would have to do that with Tulip. I have to be careful as at her young age and weight, diarrhea is a very serious issue that requires vet intervention. I just took her for a walk and she stopped along the way trying to go. She did go but not much. Walking is good though so I will take her again tomorrow morning before it gets too hot outside.

As to her weight, I weighed her here as I could not believe she was only 12 1/2 pounds. I figured she had to be 20 pounds -- that's what she feels like when I lift her. Well, sure enough, they were correct. Unbelievable!!! She's tiny!!

I did NOT read that site VERY CAREFULLY but I thought it said not to give feed but a lot of fruit.

She's doing better. Took her out this morning on a small walk and she was able to produce a bit more.

Vi, she's not constipated which that article was about -- contstipation in pigs is a known issue and can be serious. I'm actually saving that article as it is a very good one so thanks for looking that up. Kosha's problem is that because of her surgery, it is a bit painful to use those muscles to go potty. I'm loading her up on liquids to make it softer so she doesn't have to push as hard.

Actually, one of the things they said in the article is not to feed the pigs their chow dry. Pour water over it. Over the years that these pigs have been pets (and it's not that long of a time), feeding pigs the dry pig chow has led to some pigs requiring surgery because of blockage. If mixed with water, that takes care of that problem.

Male pigs have had a problem with stones getting caught in their uretha (females too but not as often). It's extremely painful for the pig and requires vet invervention. Making sure they have plenty of liquids helps prevent that problem. Always worried about this, I gave Tulip cranberry juice mixed with her water every single day. I'll be doing the same with Kosha when she's about a year or two if her water intake slows down. Right now she drinks a LOT of water on her own.
