I'm so insanely fed up with the mites. I was smokin mad today and decided we need a plan B I noticed yesterday that my two lovebirds were slightly puffed up and very sleepy. I knew what that meant....yup more mites. I decided to cover their cage for the rest of the day, only, leave it on overnight to see if any mites show up on the blanket. Yuck, about 10 adults on the white blanket. so now it's round 2 for the mites. I'm so freakin' sick of this. PLAN B: I decided to duct tape the bottom of both flight cages, all around the entire bottom, just over the cracks, inside and out, and up inside the cages at the top. We(my nephew and I) went to work today with a full role. they gotta be hiding in the cracks of the flight cages, I guess we'll find out soon enough Also going to treat the cages at night time when they are out. Not during the day when they are hiding way in the crevices of the cages. Somewhere they got missed or were in so deep, that none of the treatments reached them. I also removed any labels that were on the bottom of the cages, we found little mites under that too!!! they werer dead. that's what gave me the idea for the duct tape. The only problem with this is it's pain stakingly slow, and stressing my birds out, we work for 1/2 hour, then leave for 1/2, then go back. I'm considering sealing up the cracks with something, just not sure what to use...it has to be safe for my birds. I could really use some bright ideas. Edited by mypetfriends, Jun 25 2011, 04:30 AM.

If ur birds get stuck on the tape, it will be like a fly on fly paper and they will freak and die. If the tape is not facing inward u are fine, just be careful. Also probably toxic if ingested. Again, all un necessary, the ail will get them all. U need to have patience. If I am correct, these r the cages u professed did not have mites as they were in another room right? As I mentioned before, better to treat all as a preventative and not wait till u actually have them or sick birds. Covering the cage early is a big mistake, it allows darkness earlier and the mites will come out earlier and feed on the birds longer depending how many there r. Do the opposite for the weak birds. Give them a bit longer light to keep the mites at bay. So they feed for a shorter duration. Beth, u need to trust me as a person who has gone thru this already, u must give it time and they will die. They need to come into contact with the dry AIL, then they need time to die, then they need a few feeds on the birds to get the icermec and die, then time for the breeding cycle to be interrupted, then there will all at once be a mass die off and relief for the birds. By FAR, the best weapons will be ur AIL and ivermectin. U have done all that. After that, the once a month spray will kill any stray or newly introduced red mites. I'll say no more. Ah, no different than fleas on a dog, as long as u keep the numbers down, they won't kill the birds. It's just got to be an ongoing prevention. Each and everyone of u on here who takes in a new bird is at risk. Most of my breeder friends ivermectin their stock while in the nest. They don't have any mite problems. That is one thing u either need to ask or don't trust, just quarantine and do it yourself. Ever since my outbreak, I have not seen a one. A bird is never allowed to leave my home without ivermectin to protect the new owner AND the bird from getting it from their new home, initially anyway. I educate all my buyers. |

Tish, I never stop learning. It truly is an eye opener. I'm sure a lot of breeders and owners have them and don't know. Worse, many will lie about having them in the first place. I think they r afraid of the stigma or feel shame, feeling they will be judged as dirty. That is simply not true, they can come from so many sources, from ur shoes, a grocery bag set down to open a door, from the veggies in ur garden, houseplants and then list goes on. I think there should be a law for pet stores and vet clinics to have to spray for them and do any proper maintenance to help stop the spread or any infestation. All the show people always spray and even quarantine between shows. U get the odd case of scaly face tossed from a show, but for the most part, the hardcore breeders take precaution. I'm off to bed, long day tomorrow. Edited by Crazy Bird Lady, Jun 25 2011, 07:03 AM.

A.I.L., and Iivermectin are the primary sources that have been proven to work, and I'm making good progress for sure. I had good success with the duct tape. we found 10 mites or so stuck on the tape, in different areas of the cage, also they are hiding or coming from the carpet. |
