...here is a rundown on Citrus my ill canary. she has red mites - she's has them for quite sometime, but did not show up or didn't see them until I took her over to Maryanns' this morning. Her cover on her cage had probably 10-20 on there, very gross!! from the advice of Maryann I went on a 'road trip' and got A.I.L. which is a liquid you mix, spray on everything, cages, perches, birds, cups...anything in a cage, which kills the mites. All cages and birds are being treated from bottom to top I use Diatimacious powder on the bottom of the cage, to kill those little #$%#@@. Also treating all my flock tonight with Ivermectin. I have to put one drop under each armpit for each canary, and two drops for my larger birds, like my lovebirds, budgies, linnies and cockatiels. I don't know how we got them, they could have come in from the dogs, cats, any bird I purchased, the bird seed I get, millet I get in bulk, god only knows. As for Citrus I have a new found respect for her, she is one tough nugget, she was literally lying on her side by the time I got to Maryanns this morning at 9:30, breathing heavy and almost crapping out. She was given sugar water, 4n'1,by mouth and a Baytril injection She was better by the time we left. This afternoon she flew to her perch! but most of the time she is very weak and staying in her seed dish. I am giving her 4n'1 mixed with 1/4 tsp of sugar, about every 1/2 hour to hour. she gets so weakened by that she just crashed on her side. I have pictures: one before treatment and after. Just one note for everyone who has birds, mites are difficult to see during the day, and they come out at night like feinds and will suck on your bird like vultures, possibly eventually killing them. It's better to treat before you have an infestation like I do. My other canary Mango has been infected as she sits on the bottom of the cage periodically during the day, breathing hard, which she has NEVER done before, and her babies who are now 6 weeks old, and sleeping during the day.Their breathing is regular their cage was beside Citris's. My lovebirds cage is beside Mangos. guess what...they have it too. I was unscrewing the knob, from one of the rope perches, they were hiding inside the knob!!!!over 200 of them........I freaked!!!! my daughter who is 9 went running from the bird room, screaming 'that's gross, that's gross!!!! Yeah it is, but now they won't have those 200 little corksoakers lol, at them tonight. Mango and her babies have been transferred to another clean cage and put in my large soaker tub, along with Citrus, with a heatlamp. Citrus might make it and she might not, but thanks to Maryann she came to my rescue, and has saved at least 14 of my birds. It's now 7 and don't have time to post the pics, I'll do it tomorrow. Here is Citris lying on her side the her beak facing towards you...it's the only best picture I could get with my stupid camera, this is a before shot. the second shot is her after a treatment We've discovered she has paralysis in her left leg, and has trouble standing. She's alert, not sleeping during the day, eats her seed on and off, but is still not out of the woods yet. ![]() ![]() Edited by mypetfriends, Jun 16 2011, 08:38 PM.

Oh you poor thing. I remember when Maryann went through that herself....it was horrible and she had to work like a slave for days. I don't know where you live Beth but I know Maryann lives near water and kind of forest area I wonder if that could be why mites seem to be there more. I don't think we have that prob here but I believe its worth looking into anyway. I think I will call my bird lady to see what she has. Good luck Beth...I hope you get all those little bastards. They were sucking your little canary dry.

What a horrible story. I'm sorry you're having to deal with that on top of everything else. Vi, that's a very good observation. I'll have to look into that and if that's the case, I would be fortunate in that no forest in my neck of the woods. Water is something that is conserved around here because of the desert conditions. |

Vi- I'm 2 minutes away from Maryanns house. Our lake is at the end of our street, the canal is at the back of her house that leads into the lake. With my daughters help we managed to get everything done. She's a real pro and helps me out with my entire flock. I have a deal with her, if I sell a bird she gets 10% for helping all the time. As far as I can tell, my birds in the bedroom are not infected, but were treated as a precaution. I found no evidence of any mites at all, thankgod!!! I couldn't sleep in my bedroom knowing those little creature were coming out at night....too creepy for me. |

Cathy they wont be gone for awhile, it takes time for them to all come into contact with the chemical and or on the bird or premises. Its a royal pain in the ass and an ongoing fight. |

It's definately a fight I'm going to win, no matter what. After what I've seen it do to poor Citris, who's laid up and can barely stand upright, it's so sad and could have been prevented before this happened. she's been fighting this since May 24th, and is still alive. she is such a fighter, I just wish I caught this sooner, and hoping this paralized part of her gets better. Even my daughter said she saw Citris standing on both feet, upright! She said maybe she's paralyzed from all the blood loss, they could have been feeding on that leg more, and has some nerve damage. I sure hope she picks up and recovers. June 17th************** Citris was pretty good this morning, she kept flying up to her perch, trying to balance herself on it, then would wedge herself in between the side of the cage and the perch, she looked quite pleased with herself As the day goes on, she tends to flip over on her back and can't get back up, because her leg or legs are paralized....poor thing. So I keep getting her upright, she'll sit for a bit then try and move, and she falls over again. By the end of the day, she's so wiped out she gives up.How stressful it must be for her to be upside down. Today I purchased a bottle of iron drops for her. I read after the mites feed off the birds they most likey will become anemic. I put 1 drop of iron in her mouth, and will repleat it tonight. I don't want to give up on her at all, but I hate seeing her suffer...the good thing is she is alert, she has normal head movements, her wings work, it's just her legs won't work. She's eating seed that I have on the bottom of the cage, and I give her 3-4 drops of 4n1 every hour or so. I'm still finding mites in water dishes in the morning, and constantly cleaning all the cages , food & water dishes are removed totally and everything is thrown out, replaced with fresh food, fresh water & clean dishes are given. I bought new perches for the birds and tossed the old ones outside. |Any toys that came from the cages are outside until I get to them I purchased another heat lamp and put it in the bird room, where the mites are. The heat lamp attracks the mites and then fry's them. here's a picture of Citris this morning on her perch...looking pretty good ![]() Saturday June whatever.... Citris is better today, I've been giving her 4n1 along with her drop with iron and what a difference. She's still having trouble with her mobility in her legs but she is more upright today, eating more, drinking more flying to the sides of the cage, and trying to perch more. we spent most of the day using a steam bottle on all the cages. we bought 2 of them so it would go twice as fast. 3 hours later we were only half done, which was terribly frustrating. the four of us were doing two cages at a time, man this was sooooo time consuming!!!!! it's now 10:15 and I'm pooped. talk to u tomorrow Sunday June whatever-- Today I finally finished treating all the cages. God I NEVER want to see another mite EVER again.....EVER!!!! when I get a minute I'm posting how to treat for mites
