How much Pepto would you give and is it totally safe to use on a Cockatiel, since he gets severe loose stools during molting I thought if safe I would like to try. I thought I would just put on my finger and let him take it off. |

DIARRHEA Remove fresh fruits and grit. Feed cooked white rice, peanut butter, baby pablum, canned baby foods, Chamomile tea, or a few deops of Pepto Bismol. Cathy...got the above from a Cockatiel site. From the few I looked at a few people said the Pepto was okay and several said no. Evidently they don't like the taste so I wonder if he/she will take it off your finger. Until we hear from Maryann...there are some other options to consider above. I guess if the diarrhea is bad you'll have to do something so he doesn't get dehydrated. Keep us updated if you can. Maryann should be on soon. Hugs to you and Cappone.

Cathy, my bird medical book says, 10 drops up to every 4 hours. This is a printed book by a vet. Of either or the pepto or the kaeo. It sounds like alot but do as I do as a test, put ten drops in a spoon and see how minute it is lol. Again, the keao is not as evil tasting as the pepto. My hen cheeky is more alert today but completely paralized, she cannot use her legs or feet. She is JUST like that male canary rambo I had years ago. Seems alert but screwed. There is no outward signs of any injury. I suspect either a tumor internally or neurological. I have done some research online and am scouring my books. I will keep her comfy as I did Bobo, she has a soft bed, she is in a warm room, I poured some seed in front of her face and she actually ate some, she has not eaten on her own in days. So not sure how it will go. I gave her medicam today so if she was feelilng any pain, she wont now. I will care for her for as long as she seems happy enough. I dont mind, she is almost as sweet as cricket was. She was my firstborn baby bub that was very cheeky, sneaking up out of the nest box to be with me and play with my hair and face. She is so sweet. Tomorrow, I will make a sling for her in my neck and she will travel with me so she thinks she is perched up high. Her poops seem more formed, and not sure if the paralysis is due to the meds, or her gradual weakness and wobblyness on the perch that just got worse to this point. Anti inflammatories certainly wont hurt. I will let her fake fly around as well tomorrow. Whatever she needs. |

Well I did some more research and am gonna try one more drug tomorrow. It is gallimycin. Supposed to be good for camphelobactor. I read that that bacteria can cause paralysis. If it IS this bacteria and the meds are still good, they have been in the fridge, then it says it can reverse the paralysis. IF it is that and not a kidney tumor. I will keep up with the medicam and the gallymicyn and hope for the best. |

Yes, she had meds for that already. She had cocci meds, protazoa meds, respitory meds, e coli meds, some of the meds cover a few different things. I am now trying the Colosoma meds. Starting this am. I read that if it is a kidney tumor, then thats it. I guess like the canary she will eventually die. If it is the colosoma, she will recover. I am working between the meds, keaopectate, to coat the digestive tract and will also start on garlic water that I made last nite as per info on a pigeon site.... GARLIC-- Has anti-oxidant properties as well as anti-parasitic properties which kill intestinal parasites. It protects the liver from the damage of chemical pollutants in the air and in food and water supply. Researchers at the University of Cambridge in England found that garlic juice is as strong as the antifungal drugs, Amphotericin and Nystatin, against Candida, a fungal problem sometimes found in parrots. Garlic should be used sparingly in the bird diet, and in the form of fresh garlic slices rather than concentrated garlic powder. One or two thin slices once or twice a week is sufficient. Garlic belongs to a family of plants that may cause anemia in some animals if given for long periods of time. An another site. Here is another great video from Dennis of hawkbait lofts, he shows how he adds garlic to his birds drinking water once per week. He simply takes 4 cloves of ordinary garlic and removes the skin then pokes holes in them ad adds them to one gallon of drinking water. The garlic helps to purify the pigeons blood if you notice your pigeons nose is getting grey the garlic will help turn it back to healthy chalky white, it helps with curculation helping the viens to open and the blood to flow. The garlic also helps in the birds intestinal tract you should also notice that their droppings become firmer. |

Ok, today she seems more alert and imminetly out of danger of dying. She doesnt have that shocky look anymore. She is normal from the head up and paralysed from the legs down. I have to squeeze her abdomen on each side of her vent to evacuate for her. I have her set up with a bed and feed on either side with the water dish in front of her face. I am crop feeding her till I see her eat enough on her own. I put meds during the day via eye dropper. I am using garlic water, meds water and pedialyte alternatively. On a worse note.... the two zebbie bubs alive last nite, dead and tossed this am. Piss me OFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFffff!!! Betty Davis is found dead today as well, unrelated tho. She had been going lite, then got better, then was eating well, but still quite lite and gone today. She was 6 years old, I guess that is the relative life span of a big english. I hope that is all the bad news for now. Im getting sick of it again. Ok this was her yesterday, note, she is rather tired looking and laying in her feed dish. Not looking good at all. ![]() Today after kaeopectate, which I believe may be taking or absorbing some of the bacteria and hoping buying me time to let the meds work. Her head movements and eyes are normal and brighter. I have her beside the flight so she is face to face with the males and the bird noises she is used to. At nite, she goes into the heated bathroom in a smaller bed type cage so she can shuffle around. Its actually a small wooden Norwich show cage. ![]() Edited by Crazy Bird Lady, Feb 23 2011, 07:00 PM.
