Point form. One hen had died. Sparky, a green original bub. She seemed totally fine and then just died in my hand a few weeks ago when I tried to medicate. I may have mentioned it. She was panting like a dog, REALLY fast heart rate. Well, her sister Cheeky, was looking wobbly on the perch. She still is. She is very tired. Wont eat, has super flat diarrhea. I had put the entire flock on baytril when Sparky died. But that helped some but now all. So I took cheeky, gave her the emergency treatment, crop needling, vits, meds. I have her on doxy and Sulfa and Metronidazole, she is being treated for parasites, bacteria and e coli. She is so sick that I dont have the time to just use one. If its the wrong one she will die. So not sure which one will work, but in the meatime, I am doing them all via crop needle spaced out during the 3 times a day feed. The males seem super noisy and happy. The rest of the entire flock is being treated for giardia just in case. My tiel Moose seemed tired and out of sorts today as well. I had him under the heat for a bit, put him in his own cage but he wanted to be with the rest. Anyway, I saw him eating his fresh seed today, so I will keep an eye on him, he is on the giardia meds as well. The finches and canaries are on a safer giardia med, called Ronex as the Metro is toxic to them. I have 2 zebbie finche bubs in the nest, parents seem to be feeding them, so far today was day 3. I am afraid to bug them too much as I dont want to have them toss them. I will pull them in 10 days or so to hand rear. I am struggling to keep Cheeky alive. She has started to curse me out, so that may be a good sign. |

Maryann I had a feeling something was wrong over there but I didn't expect this. I'm sorry ... seems you only get peace for short periods of time. I hope meds work for all the birds and Cheeky gets better soon.

Vi, she is much worse this am, she can barely stand, she is laying in her food dish and much more wobbly. It makes me so mad. There is never enough time with birds to even get a sample to the vet. They hide it well enough and then by the time u take your best guess to stabilize as per Dr. Marshall, they crap out. It gets really disenchanting. A bloody seemingly healthy bird to go down so fast that doesnt respond to meds. I really told my hubby that there really is too much negative to the positive and I may just let all die off in natural course and only keep a few finches. I am really kinda sick of them being sick. They get the best of everything, food, water, greens, sprouts, vits, minerals. Seems no matter what I do, they start to die off. The males seem noisy and well enough, but something has afflicted the hens. I must have a diseased carrier in the flock that eventually gets some sick and then they die off. Not sure what to do anymore. I think I will try one last ditch protocol with the flock. I will do the Dr. Marshall monthy CRAZY meds and vits. He calls for ivermectin, e. coli and cocci prevention almost monthy???!!!!! If I dont kill them with meds and vits, they die of disease anyway, so what have I got to lose. |

Maryann sorry to hear this, hopefully you will be able to get rid of whatever is causing it, if it is one that is initially sick and spread it maybe the treatment will cure that one and eliminate the issue |

I certainly hope so. So far the rest look fine, but it is so strange how she would fall sick and not the others. Im torn between crop feeding her and prolonging the inevitable. I have such a hard time to euthenize and only do so as they are dying literally as I want to give them every chanse for recovery and for the meds to work. I injected her with baytril this am. Gave her kaeopectate into the crop as well. I am afraid to go look now but I must. I dont want her to suffer or be afraid. |

Maryann I have a question, I hate to bother you though so I will understand if you do not have the desire to answer right now. To treat diarrhea during molting can you use any other product besides kaopectate such as pepto bismal or immodium etc. and if so what dose |

Yes to pepto, not sure about immodium, would have to ask a vet. I use kaeo as it is not a nasty flavor for the birds. They HATE the pepto. |
