Update. ALL 3 gaped nicely just now for food. So I guess that one was not hungry at the time. I am waiting at least two hours between feeds so as to not get crop infection or stasis. It is clear that they cannot be put under the parents for at least 3 days. I will attempt it tho, if they dont feed, then I will top them up and give to Inchy to raise, if he wont feed, its all me baby. |

Well he hasnt done anything yet. I am feeding for now till I know they are strong and gaping well. I JUST emailed Pass that I noticed one of them seems different for SURE. The mouth/gape is much lighter????? I wonder if I have a mutation of blue or silver????? There is no dark rim around the mouth like the other two. I am scared to dare to think anything past a few hours at a time or hope anything, till I know they are past the dying stage. Fingers sooooooooooooooooooooo crossed right now. |

Ok here is what the one male is probably gonna look like. So by the gouldian forecast, IF there are no surprise splits. Two hens and one cock. They will look like this. This is what the male will look like if NOT split to anything. Pretty yellow with a lilac breast. ![]() The hen will be normal but with lilac as well. ![]() If they were split to blue then, the male would look like this ![]() and the hen, this. ![]() |

I just rechecked the dead in shell and it was also a mutation, would have been a male. Pity. Again another bloody lesson learned the hard way. Fully mature, but not hatched out. So it looks like the one normal and one mutation had a hard time hatching. Lucky the one had actually pipped partially thru for me to see and let Inchy assist. I wish I had known to crack the other egg. I have made a note now that when they drawdown and ANY hatch, I will go ahead and start cracking for them and even give sugar water on the half shell as I read in a budgie book once. I guess it depends on how the hen sets on the eggs and incubates. Some are stronger than others. I hate when that happens. I will let this pair of parents rest now and may set up another color combination to see if I get any surprises out of them. I may let the hubby pic for me. He keeps teasing me that all are just hum drum normal non special or rare mutations lol, I told him, I will keep breeding then until I get a surprise rare mutation, he just laughed. What a ratbag. The other thing I may do is let the males pic a hen and set them up and see what comes. Could be fun. Soon I'll need glasses tho to feed the bubs, they are that small when hatched. |

Great CBL, But I think this is too much work. I mean you are up in their business a lot lol. Mine have hatched 6 so i left 4 under societies and two with zebras and that's it. They are a few days old now. Don't get me wrong, I am worried about YOU, this is stressing you more than it should. |

Vi, thats so nice of you, I hope all is going well and you are not fretting. Pass, I am surprisingly calm about this clutch. I feel that I am skilled enough for the feedings now since that last clutch, but still hate losing any for any reason. No stress tho. ![]() Dont u worry. I still may put them under Inchy tho when they are gaping consistantly well. When he sees them in his nest he goes into panic feed the bubs mode lol. I think until the yolk sac is totally absorbed it is my job to just keep them hydrated. At any one time any ONE bub will gape really well and let me get a full crop in. The other two at the time will refuse food. As long as I still see yolk sac thru the skin of the abdomen, I wont force feed them. Just brush diluted formula water along the side of the beak and watch them swallow and fill the crop that way. I didnt kill the last 3 and they had even MORE yolk retained that these three. I just think that these mutations in general are a weaker species. I hope to see them grow to full color tho. |
