Ok, this am 4am, feed all and everything fine. I took the egg out of the incubator and put it back under Booboo. I was scared and not sure if he would hatch it or kill it. It was in full drawdown yesterday. When I candled it this morning it looked kinda blotchy so I thought it may have been dis. Thing is he wont set overnite so I had to take 'MY' shift and sit on it for him lol, in the incubator of course. So this morning now, pie eyed, I get up to feed @ 9 am ish. I look at doodoo and he is EATING an egg. I FREAK thinking he as just killed the chick and eaten the egg. I have seen him break and egg before and was loathe to try him again. Anyway, I open his cage to take it away, was I pissed as hell, thinking he is a cannibal-bird eating monster. Well I glimpse a fricken gaping chick IN THE NEST. I was stunned and pleased and surprised at the same time. So just now I gave doodoo a hand feed mouthful thru the bars with a pipette. He curses me if he sees me feeding anyone else. He thinks I'm two timing him lol. So now we will see if he starts to feed that chick asap. Now I have do wait up at least an hour to see if he feeds. I guess crawling back into bed is out of the question. Im soooooooooooooooo tired from the night feedings and then the dog waking me up, I could just fall over zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. |

Well after an hour or so of not feeding the bub, I did, I was able to use a flashlite and a long paint brush and feed thru the bars and into the nest. It is too hard to try to get the bub out, my hands are too big for the nest entrance. I would have to use a curved plastic spoon like I do with the eggs. So for now, he has food in his crop. He seemed to be not gaping as much after the hour so I went ahead and did it. Booboo went in after and had a good look, it seemed like he was very interested in the chick so I watched to make sure he didnt bite or hurt it. He then settled in on top. So will keep a close eye. |

Well, doodoo head has still not fed his bub, but he sits on him. I have been feeding between the bars. ALSO, the second egg hatched this evening under Inchy and there is one more. So so far, if all goes well, we have saved the entire clutch, as long as none that I am feeding get any infection, that is the only thing that worries me now. I am hoping that doodoo will clue in and start actually feeding. I will have to pull the bub for over nite to feed and then give back to doodoo in the morn. He seems to not sit on eggs at nite. That is why I only gave him this egg when it was in full drawdown, knowing it had to hatch today. So funny that Inchy is feeding his second bub even tho it is 4 days later to hatch, I figured they would abandon the new ones and only feed the one. Will have to possibly pull the one if it is too big and crushes the little ones. They are literally half the size or less. Still deciding what to do. |

No, it is 4 am here Pass, I will put him back under him when I get up to feed at 5:30am. The other bub should be hatched out this am if not already. So one will go back under Inchy and one under Doodoo. What I noticed last nite was that both these bubs had remnants of the bright yellow yolk sac that I have been reading about, so I switche from formula to a pissy watery solution. I now seem to have the routine down. I dip the paint brush and literally tap any and all food off of it, just actually to keep the brush moist, not wet or not really anything u can see on it and yet the bubs get a full crop. To me its the safest way. Here are some pics. I had read about this sac but have never seen it on any chicks till now. I suspect that these two may have lived the extra hours because they had reserve, but I noted that the lilacs did NOT have any yellow. Thats why they died overnite. I greatly regret that now. I should have pulled them when I had the chanse. :(. Pass, have any of ur chicks had the yolk sac before??? I had always worried about the yolk sac, as I have looked but never seen it and always wondered if the intestinal loops I saw where the sacs, but now I can clearly see that the yellow is very obvious. So now I know, u thing there would be pics to accompany these bloody books that people are writing/publishing. I should right my own with tons of pics to illustrate how its done. ![]() ![]() This is the bub no one would feed and that Doodoo bit in my hand. Note his chin is well hydrated and almost swollen compared to the new chick with the wrinkles under the neck/chin. So hydration is the key to keeping them alive till the sac is absorbed.

Ok, I just did the old switch. I feed all the bubs, then put Booboos back and I think I saw him feeding or inquiring anyway. Inchy's big one I stole out and put my 5 day in after I fed it and the two teeny ones. Then they fed ALL 3 right in front of my eyes with a huge flashlite in their faces So I had a great view. Now I let them feed their big 5 day old first before I did the switch and what I noted was that my guy was much more hydrated than theirs. He was wrinkled and mine was shiny. They were BOTH the same size Very interesting. So I am relieved, now I have to decide to either pull another teeny one from Inchy and give it to Booboo so the nest is not too crowed. Im worried if I put the two big ones in Inchys cage, that they may squish out the one teeny one there.I will see when I get up, so recap, right now, Booboo has his bub, Inchy has two teeny ones that hatched yesterday and in the middle of the nite, plus my 5 day old. I did the switch because I wanted him to have the benefit of the enzymes from the parents. Their 5 day old is in my incubator for now waiting to be put back when I get up later in the morn. So we shall see how it all goes. Im just so sad that I didnt figure out this safe way to feed before the lilacs abandoned theirs and died. Thats why I want to chronicle everything I can before I forget.
